While nitrogen fertilizers are widely used in agricultural production, their application incurs significant environmental and energetic costs. In contrast, some crops are less dependent on these fertilizers because they engage in symbioses with rhizobia, nitrogen-fixing bacteria that provide ammonium to the plant in exchange for carbon. However, the carbon cost associated with nitrogen fixation can negatively impact crop yields. Improving the efficiency of this metabolic process could alleviate this impact on crop productivity. Mathematical models can help us quantitatively explore metabolic b

The Nostocales are filamentous cyanobacteria that include bloom-forming, nitrogen-fixing species with major ecological and biotechnological relevance. Owing to their metabolic diversity, nitrogen-fixing capabilities and nutritional profile, they hold potential for various biotechnological applications including the production of nutraceuticals and biofertilizers. However, the capacity of certain Nostocales species to produce cyanotoxins also raises health concerns. This study provides a comparative bioinformatic analysis of 161 Nostocales genomes from the National Center for Biotechnology Info

A total of twenty-three endophytic bacteria were isolated from Tripterygium wilfordii, among which three strains were selected for further studying based on their capabilities of growth-promotion and wheat germination. All three isolated strains could produce phytohormone and siderophore, and LG3 and LJ10 strains were capable of dissolving phosphorus. Additionally, LG3 and LY4 strains were both proved to have nitrogen-fixing function and 1-aminocyclopropane-1carboxy-late deaminase activity. Bacterial 16S rDNA sequence identification and homology analysis suggested that LG3 and LY4 strains belo

The symbiosis between legumes and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (rhizobia) is instrumental in sustaining the nitrogen cycle and providing fixed nitrogen to the food chain. Both partners must maintain an efficient nutrient exchange to ensure a successful symbiosis. This mini-review highlights the intricate phosphate and iron uptake and homeostasis processes taking place in legumes during their interactions with rhizobia. The coordination of transport and homeostasis of these nutrients in host plants and rhizobia ensures an efficient nitrogen fixation process and nutrient use. We discuss the genetic

Plants respond to increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations by reducing leaf nitrogen content and photosynthetic capacity-patterns that correspond with increased net photosynthesis and growth. Despite the longstanding notion that nitrogen availability regulates these responses, eco-evolutionary optimality theory posits that leaf-level responses to elevated CO2 are driven by leaf nitrogen demand for building and maintaining photosynthetic enzymes and are independent of nitrogen availability. In this study, we examined leaf and whole-plant responses of Glycine max L. (Merr) subjected to full-fac

Legume trees form an abundant and functionally important component of tropical forests worldwide with N2-fixing symbioses linked to enhanced growth and recruitment in early secondary succession. However, it remains unclear how N2-fixers meet the high demands for inorganic nutrients imposed by rapid biomass accumulation on nutrient-poor tropical soils. Here, we show that N2-fixing trees in secondary Neotropical forests triggered twofold higher in situ weathering of fresh primary silicates compared to non-N2-fixing trees and induced locally enhanced nutrient cycling by the soil microbiome commun

Decentralized wastewater treatment in rural areas is an imperative challenge around the world, particularly in developing countries. The composite filter bed reactor is viable for decentralized wastewater treatment, but its performance on nitrogen removal often fluctuates with the unstable influent characteristics and loadings. Here, a composite filter bed reactor integrating sulfur, iron(II), and fixed organic carbon (shaddock peel) was developed and continuously operated under different conditions. The fixed organic carbon source promoted nitrogen removal with an efficiency higher than 90% a

The phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity of adenosine-3':5'-monophosphate was detected in the cells of tubercular bacteria of Rhizobium lupini and Rhizobium japonicum. The specific activity of three Rhizobium forms, e.g. bacteroids from lupine root tubercles, free-nitrogen-fixing culture and vegetative cells grown on a mannitol--yeast agar, were compared. In the bacteroids PDE is represented both by soluble and membrane-bound forms. The optimal enzyme activity is revealed in an alkaline medium, whereas the curve of PDE activity dependence on pH has a broad maximum. PDE is inhibited by methylxanthi

Rhizobial soil bacteria can form a symbiosis with legumes in which the bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia that can be utilized by the host. The plant, in turn, supplies the rhizobia with a carbon source. After infecting the host cell, the bacteria differentiate into a distinct bacteroid form, which is able to fix nitrogen. The bacterial BacA protein is essential for bacteroid differentiation in legumes producing nodule-specific cysteine-rich peptides (NCRs), which induce the terminal differentiation of the bacteria into bacteroids. NCRs are antimicrobial peptides similar to mammali

Nodule-forming bacteria play crucial roles in plant health and nutrition by providing fixed nitrogen to leguminous plants. Despite the importance of this relationship, how nodule-forming bacteria are affected by plant exudates and soil minerals is not fully characterized. Here, the effects of plant-derived methanol and lanthanide metals on the growth of nitrogen-fixing Rhizobiales are examined. Prior work has demonstrated that select Bradyrhizobium strains can assimilate methanol only in the presence of lanthanide metals; however, the pathway enabling assimilation remains unknown. In this stud

Legumes establish mutualistic symbiosis with nitrogen (N)-fixing bacteria, which allows them to utilise atmospheric N2. Because the maintenance of symbiosis requires abundant carbon (C) sources, legumes regulate the balance between carbon consumption and nitrogen acquisition by systemically controlling the nodule number through CLAVATA1 (CLV1)-like receptors. In Lotus japonicus, the CLV1-like receptor HYPERNODULATION ABERRANT ROOT FORMATION1 (HAR1) acts in shoots to regulate root nodulation and contributes to symbiotic C/N coordination. This raises the possibility that HAR1 may also influence

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation in legumes requires the exquisite regulation of the environment within the infected region of the nodule. The microaerobic environment critical for nitrogenase activity is maintained through the physical oxygen diffusion barrier of the cortex and locally the oxygen-binding protein leghemoglobin (Lb). Leghemoglobin binds and releases oxygen with heme moiety to maintain oxygen gradients inside the infected cell (IC) during nitrogen fixation. Heme binds to diverse proteins and plays critical roles in different redox reactions. However, the role and regulation of host-c

Caves formed by sulfuric acid dissolution have been identified worldwide. These caves can host diverse microbial communities that are responsible for speleogenesis and speleothem formation. It is not well understood how microbial communities change in response to surface water entering caves. Illumina 16S rRNA sequencing and bioinformatic tools were used to determine the impact of surface water on the microbial community diversity and function within a spring pool found deep in the Monte Conca Cave system in Sicily, Italy. Sulfur oxidizers comprised more than 90% of the microbial community dur

Multidrug efflux systems not only cause resistance against antibiotics and toxic compounds but also mediate successful host colonization by certain plant-associated bacteria. The genome of the nitrogen-fixing soybean symbiont Bradyrhizobium japonicum encodes 24 members of the family of resistance/nodulation/cell division (RND) multidrug efflux systems, of which BdeAB is genetically controlled by the RegSR two-component regulatory system. Phylogenetic analysis of the membrane components of these 24 RND-type transporters revealed that BdeB is more closely related to functionally characterized or

Legumes have developed a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria known collectively as rhizobia, which when present in root nodules fix atmospheric nitrogen into a form usable by the plant. The functioning unit of symbiotic nitrogen fixation is referred to as the symbiosome and the membrane separating symbionts acts to regulate the metabolite exchange within the root nodule cells. The efflux of fixed nitrogen from the symbiosome is through an unidentified non-selective cation channel, which is inwardly rectified by cytosolic Mg2+ and has a preference for ammonium. Expression of Nodulin 26 (N

Global warming and the resulting surface seawater stratification have led to dominance of small phytoplankton, driving substantial changes in planktonic ecosystem structure. This study investigates the composition and nitrogen sources of phytoplankton and other basal resources by analyzing the cosmopolitan copepod Calanus spp. in western North Pacific. Carbon isotope ratios of amino acids (δ13CAA) in Calanus spp. tissue revealed geographically distinct basal diets: N2-fixing organisms (19.6 ± 5.8%) and heterotrophic bacteria (30.6 ± 5.3%) in the tropical and subtropical Pacific, and dinoflagel

Paper mill bamboo sludge (PMBS) and Paper mill lime waste (PMLW) are extensively produced as solid wastes in paper mills. Untreated PMBS and PMLW contain substantial amount of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cr) in soluble forms. Efficiency of vermiconversion and aerobic composting with these wastes is reported here. Adopted bioconversion systems enhanced the availability of some essential nutrients (N, P, K and Zn) in various combinations of cow dung (CD) with PMBS and PMLW. Colonization of nitrogen fixing bacteria and phosphate solubilizing bacteria considerably intensified under the vermiconv

Agricultural practices, including organic amendments and microbial inoculants, strongly influence soil microbial communities, which play a crucial role in maintaining soil function and structure. To identify an effective strategy for improving soil microbiome diversity and crop production, we assessed and compared the soil microbial community in fields treated with cattle manure amendment (MA), microbial inoculant (MI), and a mixture of cattle manure and microbial inoculant (MM), while an untreated field served as the control. We then evaluated treatment effects on soybean production. Microbia
