Warning Labels for Nonnutritive Sweeteners: A Randomized Controlled Trial with Chilean Parents.

BACKGROUND: In Chile, added sugar warning labels prompted product reformulation with nonnutritive sweeteners (NNS). Some countries have since adopted NNS labels to discourage this industry response, but evidence of their effects on consumer behavior is limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the impact of 2 types of NNS labels on Chilean parents' NNS-containing product identification, product choices for their children, and product perceptions. METHODS: In 2025, 3523 Chilean parents (children age 2-14 y) were randomly assigned to either no NNS label (control), a child-focused NNS wa

Association between consumption of sweeteners and endometrial cancer risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

The purpose of this study is to further investigate the relationship between sweetener exposure and the risk of endometrial cancer (EC). Up until December 2022, a literature search in an electronic database was carried out utilizing PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid, and Scopus. The odds ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluate the results. Sweeteners were divided into nutritional sweeteners (generally refers to sugar, such as sucrose and glucose) and non-nutritional sweeteners (generally refers to artificial sweeteners, such saccharin and aspartame). Ten cohort studies an

Intake of Artificial Sweeteners by Children: Boon or Bane?

BACKGROUND: Sugar is the main culprit in many health dysfunctions. Excessive sugar intake can negatively affect oral health, precipitate diabetes, and lead to weight gain and obesity. Sucrose is the primary form of sugar, and is strongly correlated with dental caries. Artificial sweeteners are chemically synthesized sugar substitutes that are generally regarded as being low-calorie. OBJECTIVE: This review examines the current evidence in the literature for the need for artificial sweeteners and outlines its implications for the health of children. We briefly outline its adverse effects, and c

Effects of sucralose on insulin and glucagon-like peptide-1 secretion in healthy subjects: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence shows that non-nutritive sweeteners might induce glucose intolerance. This study aims to determine the effects of chronic exposure to sucralose on glycemic response, insulin secretion and sensitivity, and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) release in healthy subjects. METHODS: Healthy volunteers who did not use non-nutritive sweeteners and were normoglycemia after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were recruited. Subjects underwent a 75-g OGTT on two separate occasions, preceded by blindly consuming pills containing either 200 mg sucralose or placebo for 4 wk in a

Does drinking saccharin weaken an association of sweet with calories? Pre-exposure effects in flavor preference learning.

The main aim of this experiment was to examine the claim that exposure to non-nutritive sweeteners weakens the formation of a sweet-calorie association. Three groups of food-deprived rats received training in which they drank an almond-flavored maltodextrin and saccharin solution. A final test phase assessed their preference for almond. The groups differed in preexposure prior to training. One was pre-exposed to saccharin, one to saccharin plus maltodextrin, and the third, control condition, received only water at this stage. When the rats continued under food deprivation for the test phase, t

Diet for a Healthy Lactating Woman.

The nutrient and caloric requirements for lactation are set by the Institute of Medicine. The dietary pattern to meet those needs is found in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Only deficiency states for selected nutrients and/or prolonged inadequate caloric intake appear to affect the volume and quality of breast milk. Other dietary concerns of lactating women include "dieting" to return to prepregnancy weight; low maternal intake of selected nutrients due to health conditions or food choices; need for supplementation of calcium, vitamin D, and fatty acids; and use of non-nutritive sweeten

Exposure to Sucralose and Its Effects on Testicular Damage and Male Infertility: Insights into Oxidative Stress and Autophagy.

BACKGROUND: The impact of non-nutritive sweeteners on male reproductive health, particularly at the cellular level, remains insufficiently explored. Sucralose's high stability and resistance to degradation during wastewater treatment raises concerns about its long-term environmental and health impacts. Whether sucralose consumption correlates with reduced reproductive hormone levels and testicular damage remains unclear, and the underlying mechanisms require further investigation. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the influence of sucralose on cell damage and reproductive health in m

Non-sugar sweeteners - too sweet to be true?

Non-sugar sweeteners (NSSs) are low-calorie artificial alternatives to sugar, widely used in food, drinks, medicines and hygiene products. Their popularity has surged over recent decades, particularly for weight management and diabetes control. This paper examines the most commonly used NSSs in the United Kingdom, evaluating their chemical compositions and regulatory standards. Key findings reveal that NSSs may provide dental health benefits by reducing the risk of caries; however, their effects on metabolic health remain a topic of debate. While NSSs offer clear advantages for individuals see

Long-term artificial sweetener acesulfame potassium treatment alters neurometabolic functions in C57BL/6J mice.

With the prevalence of obesity, artificial, non-nutritive sweeteners have been widely used as dietary supplements that provide sweet taste without excessive caloric load. In order to better understand the overall actions of artificial sweeteners, especially when they are chronically used, we investigated the peripheral and central nervous system effects of protracted exposure to a widely used artificial sweetener, acesulfame K (ACK). We found that extended ACK exposure (40 weeks) in normal C57BL/6J mice demonstrated a moderate and limited influence on metabolic homeostasis, including altering

Effect of Non- and Low-Caloric Sweeteners on Substrate Oxidation, Energy Expenditure, and Catecholamines in Humans-A Systematic Review.

The use of non- and low-caloric sweetener(s) (NCS and LCS) as a means to prevent overweight and obesity is highly debated, as both NCS and LCS have been proposed to have a negative impact on energy homeostasis. This systematic review aimed to assess the impact of NCS and LCS on fasting and postprandial substrate oxidation, energy expenditure, and catecholamines, compared to caloric sweeteners or water, across different doses and types of NCS and LCS, acutely and in the longer-term. A total of 20 studies were eligible: 16 studies for substrate oxidation and energy expenditure and four studies f

Guidance for Beverages in the Diets of Children Younger Than 2 Years.

Recently the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reported a summary of recommendations from high-income countries on what and how to feed infants and children from birth to 2 years of age. The report notes generally consistent recommendations against providing sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), juice, and beverages that contain nonnutritive sweeteners to infants and children younger than 2 years. When counselling parents and other caregivers, pediatricians should feel empowered to advise against offering these beverages.

Barriers to, and facilitators of, the adoption of a sugar sweetened beverage tax to prevent non-communicable diseases in Namibia: a policy landscape analysis.

Background: Nutrition-related non-communicable diseases contribute to approximately half of the premature deaths in Namibia. Westernisation and urbanisation of communities have resulted in changing dietary patterns that see people eating more refined and high sugar content foods that are a risk for nutrition-related non-communicable diseases. Sugar-sweetened beverage taxation has been found to influence consumer purchasing behaviour and to raise revenue for health-promoting activity in other low- and middle-income countries. Objectives: To analyse Namibia's non-communicable diseases prevention
