Audiological findings in Noonan syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate audiologic properties of patients with Noonan syndrome and compare these findings with those of unaffected peers. METHODS: The study included 17 children with Noonan syndrome and 20 typically developing children without Noonan syndrome. Pure tone and speech audiometry, immitancemetric measurement, otoacoustic emissions measurement and auditory brainstem response tests were applied to all (n = 37) children. RESULTS: Hearing thresholds of children with Noonan syndrome were higher (poorer) than those observed unaffected peers, while the hearing

Noonan syndrome: an anesthesiologist's perspective.

Noonan syndrome (NS) is one of the most common non chromosomal syndrome presenting to the cardiac anesthesiologist for the management of various cardiac lesions, predominantly pulmonary stenosis (PS) (80%) and hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) (30%). The presence of HOCM in NS makes these children susceptible to acute congestive heart failure due to hemodynamic fluctuations, thus necessitating optimization of drug and fluid therapy, careful conduct of anesthesia and providing adequate analgesia in the perioperative period. We describe a case of four year old boy with NS who presen

Myeloproliferative disorder in Noonan syndrome.

Children with Noonan syndrome (NS) are at increased risk of developing juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) or a myeloproliferative disorder associated with NS (MPD/NS) resembling JMML in the first weeks of life; whereas JMML is an aggressive disorder requiring hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, MPD/NS may resolve without treatment and cases with spontaneous remission have also been reported. Two cases of NS with hematologic disorders are described. Diagnosis of the syndrome was confirmed by the identification of earlier reported germline missense mutations in the PTPN11 gene. Splenom

Orbital rhabdomyosarcoma in Noonan syndrome.

The incidence of various benign and malignant tumors is increased in patients with Noonan syndrome compared with the general population. We present a 9-year-old boy with the typical features of Noonan syndrome and an acute nonaxial proptosis of the right eye. An ultrasound scan, a computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging raised suspicion of rhabdomyosarcoma. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. The tumor was consequently treated with combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare but important differential diagnosis of tumor formation in children with Noonan synd

Noonan syndrome: a case report.

In 1930 Ullrich and in 1938 Turner described females with a syndrome of short stature, sexual infantilism and a pattern of characteristic minor anomalies including pterygium colli. This syndrome named initially as the Urlich-Turner syndrome, was later called Noonan syndrome. It was later shown that the Ullrich-Turner Syndrome (UTS) is caused by monosomy X or a structural abnormality of the second X-chromosome. Presented here is a case of Noonan Syndrome in a four and half year old boy.

Clinical manifestations of Noonan syndrome.

Noonan syndrome is a common genetic disorder characterized by facial anomalies, congenital heart defect, short stature, webbed neck, chest deformities and undescended testes. The phenotypic expression of Noonan syndrome is extremely variable, with some affected subjects showing only minor features of the syndrome. Cardiac malformations are also heterogeneous. Pulmonary stenosis, with or without dysplastic pulmonary valve and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, are the "classic" cardiac defects reported in Noonan syndrome. However, atrial septal defect, atrioventricular septal defect, left-sided obstr

[ORL involvement and Noonan syndrome].

The authors reports on the case of a young, 17-year-old girl, suffering from Noonan's syndrome, with a bilateral conductive hypoacusia. Surgical exploration of the tympanic cavity revealed on one side an attical fixing of the ossicular chain and on the other side a hyperlaxity of the incudostapedial joint. On the basis of this observation, they stress the neglect of a study of the hearing of such patients, whose verbal expression and intellectual level are also impaired. Finally, they study the type of deafness involved and its etiopathology, suggesting the hypothesis of an anomaly in the deve

Ocular manifestations of Noonan syndrome.

Noonan syndrome is a genetic condition inherited in an autosomally dominant manner, characterised by congenital heart disease, short stature, abnormal facies and the somatic features of Turner's syndrome, but a normal Karyotype. The ophthalmological and orthoptic findings on 58 patients with Noonan syndrome are reported. External features were hypertelorism (74%), downward sloping palpebral apertures (38%), epicanthic folds (39%) and ptosis (48%). The orthoptic examination revealed strabismus in 48%, refractive errors in 61%, amblyopia in 33%, and nystagmus in 9% of cases. Sixty-three per cent

Hearing loss in Noonan syndrome.

A report is presented on a man of Turkish origin, with Noonan Syndrome and unilateral conductive hearing loss since early childhood. There was no history of otitis media. At the age of 23, exploratory tympanotomy revealed a total absence of the long process of the incus and a normal-looking tympanic membrane. The position of the normal-shaped mobile stapes was just medial, and not posteromedial, to the malleus. A congenital ossicular chain anomaly was diagnosed. An allograft malleus head was interposed between the stapes and the malleus. The resulting air-bone gap was less than 10 dB. A review

Moyamoya syndrome in a child with Noonan syndrome.

Previous studies have rarely described the association between Noonan syndrome and moyamoya syndrome. Although most affected children with moyamoya exhibit ischemic symptoms, headache is also a frequent symptom. We report the case of a 9-year-old girl with Noonan syndrome and moyamoya syndrome that manifested as recurrent headaches without history of transient ischemic attack. Brain magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography revealed bilateral moyamoya syndrome and mild ventriculomegaly with focal encephalomalacia at right peritrigonal region. CFC syndrome: a syndrome distinct from Noonan syndrome.

We report two children with a common pattern of birth defects. Both have very sparse, curly hair, nystagmus and mental retardation. The first one has Noonan syndrome habitus associated with keratosis plantaris and nystagmus; the second one has a slightly Noonan-like face, macrocephaly, keratosis pilaris, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. They represent the extreme of a spectrum of congenital defects recently reported independently as CFC syndrome by Reynolds and as "Noonan-like short stature syndrome with sparse hair" by Baraitser and Patton. The clinical features are reviewed and the autonomy

A Noonan Syndrome Mimicking Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Noonan syndrome is a genetic disorder that can present with a wide range of clinical manifestations, making diagnosis challenging. This article presents the case of a 29-year-old male who presented with chest pain and ST-segment elevation, initially raising suspicion for acute coronary syndrome. However, coronary angiography revealed only ectasia of the coronary arteries, with no other pathological findings. A detailed physical examination and echocardiography revealed a pulmonary murmur, pectus excavatum, and café-au-lait spots. Additionally, both echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonan

Anaesthesia in a parturient with Noonan's syndrome.

PURPOSE: To report the management of labour analgesia and subsequent anaesthesia for postpartum bleeding in a 19-yr-old parturient with Noonan's syndrome. CLINICAL FEATURES: The patient presented in active labour at 36-wk gestation. She was known to have Noonan's syndrome and had been assessed regularly throughout pregnancy. Features of the syndrome exhibited by the patient included typical facies, chest skeletal abnormalities, pulmonary valve dysplasia, mental retardation and lymphoedema. In addition, she had Factor XI deficiency (0.46 mg.L-1) and thrombocytopenia (92 x 10(9).L-1), previousl

[Periodontal disease in Noonan's syndrome].

Two cases of non-related patients suffering from Noonan syndrome with characteristic data of the syndrome, had clinical and radiological evidence of very advanced periodontal disease. This disease seems to be unjustified because of the patients age and the lack of irritating local factors or systemic illnesses. A review of the literature showed no evidence of the periodontal disease as part of the syndrome.

Noonan's syndrome with extensive verrucae.

We report the case of a patient with multiple findings characteristic of Noonan's syndrome, including a severe lymphedema present since early infancy, hypertelorism, low-set and prominent ears, broad facies, low posterior hairline, high arched palate, broad short neck, slightly short stature, and moderate dental malocclusion. In addition, extensive verrucae planae, verrucae vulgares, and condylomata acuminata occurred and were refractory to conventional therapy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an association of Noonan's syndrome with extensive verrucae. We speculate that it is re

Colobomata associated with Noonan's syndrome.

A patient with Noonan's syndrome and fundal colobomata in both eyes is described. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the association of colobomata with Noonan's syndrome. Although the patient had poor sight since early childhood and dyspnea on exertion as a teenager, the diagnosis of Noonan's syndrome was not made until early adulthood. We hope this report will encourage recognition of this syndrome and its implications at an earlier stage.

Testicular lymphangiectasis in Noonan's syndrome.

We describe a boy with testicular lymphangiectasis and Noonan's syndrome. Both testes showed seminiferous tubules with a reduced tubular diameter, containing few spermatogonia. The testicular interstitium exhibited a number of large, dilated lymphatic vessels forming irregular channels among the seminiferous tubules and surrounding them. Since there was no accompanying pathological condition to indicate an obstruction to the lymphatic flow at the level of the spermatic cord or in the regional lymph nodes, the abnormal development of testicular lymphatic vessels suggests a congenital malformati
