Hind-casting the quantity and composition of discards by mixed demersal fisheries in the North Sea.

Many commercial fisheries seek to maximise the economic value of the catch that they bring ashore and market for human consumption by discarding undersize or low value fish. Information on the quantity, size and species composition of discarded fish is vital for stock assessments and for devising legislation to minimise the practice. However, except for a few major species, data are usually extremely sparse and reliant on observers aboard a small sample of fishing vessels. Expanding these data to estimate total regional discards is highly problematic. Here, we develop a method for utilising ad

Evidence of infectious diseases in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) hunted in the waters of Greenland and by-caught in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The pathological, microbiological and serological findings in harbour porpoises hunted in Greenlandic waters were compared with the findings in animals accidentally caught in fishing gear in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea. The body condition of the Greenlandic animals was good, whereas nine of 23 German harbour porpoises were moderately to markedly emaciated. Both groups were infested with parasites. In the Greenlandic animals parasitism of the aural peribullar cavity with Stenurus minor, of the liver and pancreas with Orthosplanchnus mironovi, of the lungs with Halocercus species and of

Seasonal distribution and abundance of microplastics in the coastal sediments of north eastern Arabian Sea.

The present study reports site-specific data on the seasonal variation in microplastic abundance and characteristics in coastal sediments along the North Eastern Arabian Sea, India. The abundance of MP in coastal sediments ranged from 4400 to 15,300 items/kg dry weight (DW), with the dominance of the size ranging between 100 and 500 μm. In the studied sediment samples, fibers were the most dominant form, followed by fragments. Ten different microplastics polymers were recorded during the study with dominance of polyethylene, polyester, polyamide and all the recorded plastic items in the sedime

Assessing extreme sea level rise impacts on coastal agriculture in Europe and North Africa.

Sea Level Rise refers to the long-term increase of sea level. This phenomenon is primarily driven by the melting of ice caps and the thermal expansion of the oceans. Extreme Sea Level Rise (ESLR) events occur when SLR combines with temporary phenomena such as storm surges, tides, and waves, creating potentially damaging coastal flooding. The accelerating impact of climate change has raised the attention on ESLR and its effects on coastal regions. This study focuses on ESLR and its potential impacts on Europe and North Africa up to 2100, with particular attention to agriculture. Utilising Joint

Sedation at sea of entangled North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) to enhance disentanglement.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to enhance removal of fishing gear from right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) at sea that evade disentanglement boat approaches. Titrated intra muscular injections to achieve sedation were undertaken on two free swimming right whales. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Following initial trials with beached whales, a sedation protocol was developed for right whales. Mass was estimated from sighting and necropsy data from comparable right whales. Midazolam (0.01 to 0.025 mg/kg) was first given alone or with meperidine (0.17 to 0.25 mg/kg) either once or fou

Carbon tetrachloride marine risk assessment with special reference to the OSPARCOM region: North Sea.

This risk assessment on carbon tetrachloride was carried out specifically for the marine environment, according to the methodology laid down in the European Union (EU) risk assessment Regulation (1488/94) and the Technical Guidance Documents for New and Existing Substances (TGD, 1996). The Montreal Protocol on ozone depleting substances scheduled a phase-out of carbon tetrachloride except for some essential and feedstock uses. This study consisted of the collection and evaluation of data on effects and environmental concentrations from analytical monitoring programs in large rivers and estuari

[Emergency medicine in the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service-Evaluation of medical emergencies in the North Sea and Baltic Sea over 2 years].

BACKGROUND: The logistic peculiarities of an emergency maritime location and the frequent additional threat of accidental hypothermia mean that the treatment of medical emergencies at sea are particularly demanding. This article describes the characteristics of emergency medical missions of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) as the main provider of non-helicopter-based medical maritime rescue on the seas off the coasts of Germany. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all missions by the DGzRS in 2017 and 2018 was carried out. The data and times of the missions

Brominated 1-methylindoles in mackerel (Scomber scombrus) fillet from the North and Baltic Sea.

GC/Orbitrap-HRMS measurements of purified mackerel (Scomber scombrus) fillet from the North and Baltic Sea indicated relevant levels of two tribrominated 1-methylindoles (triBMI a and triBMI b) and one tetrabrominated 1-methylindole (tetraBMI). To get more insights in this scarcely analyzed group of halogenated natural products (HNPs), a mixture of brominated 1-methylindoles (BMIs) was synthesized by bromination of 5-bromo-1-methylindole. Subsequently, the synthesized BMI mixture was fractionated by countercurrent chromatography (CCC). Based on GC/Orbitrap-HRMS measurements, three CCC fraction

Acoustic characterisation of unexploded ordnance disposal in the North Sea using high order detonations.

Results are presented of acoustic measurements made during the disposal of 54 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the North Sea during the pre-construction phase of two offshore windfarms. The disposals were conducted using high-order controlled detonation of donor charges placed on the seabed adjacent to the UXOs. The total charge masses ranged from 2.5 kg to 295 kg TNT equivalent, and acoustic measurements were made at ranges of 1.5 km to 58 km from the UXO. High-order detonations can present a risk of injury or death to marine mammals and other fauna from the high sound levels produced, a

Vertebral pattern variation in the North Sea harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) by computed tomography.

Vertebral series in the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) include cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and caudal. In contrast to studying skeletons from museums, in which small bones can be missed, evaluation of full body computed tomography (CT) scans provides an overview of the vertebral column, while maintaining interrelationship of all structures. The aim of this study was to document variations in vertebral patterning of the harbor porpoise via evaluation of CT images of intact stranded harbor porpoises. The harbor porpoises were divided into age classes, based on developmental stage of reprodu

When the small ones tease the largest: Microplastic and phthalate ester occurrence in cetaceans occasionally found in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.

Living in potentially burdened waters and prey on loaded species, marine mammals are sentinels for microplastic (MP) pollution. Here, seven different species of cetaceans were investigated covering baleen (Mysticeti) and toothed (Odontoceti) whales stranded along the German coast between 2016 and 2021. Intestinal and faecal samples of 12 sperm whales, three minke whales, two dolphin species, one long-finned pilot whale, one fin whale and one neonate orca were analysed. The concentrations of 11 phthalates were assessed in blubber and muscle samples. MPs were detected with Nile Red staining, pol

Low levels of munition compounds in commercially-available seafood from the North Sea and Baltic Sea pose limited risk to human seafood consumers.

Relic munitions from World Wars I and II contaminate coastal waters worldwide. Toxic chemicals such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) from underwater munitions (munition compounds, MCs) pose a risk to marine ecosystems and potentially human seafood consumers. Uptake of MCs by aquatic organisms and subsequent toxic effects have been shown in laboratory experiments and in field-collected samples of demersal fish and mussels, but the risk to human seafood consumers is not yet clear. Here, we report MC analyses of commercially-available fish from the North and Baltic Seas. Mercury (Hg) was also measu

The Caprera Canyon (north-eastern Sardinia): A hotspot of cetacean diversity in the western Mediterranean Sea.

The Caprera Canyon, a submarine canyon system off Sardinia in the western Mediterranean, was thought to be an important cetacean habitat, though studies on the area remained limited. To address this knowledge gap, 216 boat-based surveys were conducted between 2011 and 2019, covering 8443 km, using both research and whale-watching vessels. The distribution, diversity, relative abundance (Encounter Rate - ER), and habitat use of cetaceans were described, along with relevant behavioural and ecological observations. A total of 8 species were reported across 810 sightings, encompassing 7 out of the

Occurrence and molecular identification of Anisakis spp. from the North African coasts of Mediterranean Sea.

Larval forms of the genus Anisakis were reported infecting several fish species from the North African coasts of central Mediterranean Sea. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis was used to investigate the occurrence of larval forms of different Anisakis species in teleost fishes and squid from North African coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and to establish the geographical and host range of these parasites in this area. A total of 282 Anisakis larvae were identified by PCR-RFLP from 13 teleost fish species and one cephalopod species captured at

The use of NHS accident and emergency services by commercial sea fishermen in the North East of Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Commercial sea fishing is known to be a hazardous occupation, but little quantitative research has been conducted in the UK. OBJECTIVE: To describe the demography of commercial fishermen accessing NHS accident and emergency (A&E) services and profile the reasons for attendance. METHODS: Eight NHS A&E departments in North East Scotland participated in the audit. A structured data collection form was completed by the attending nurse or doctor during a 6 month period (March-August). All commercial sea fishermen attending during this time were included whether or not the reason for a

Increasing prevalence of Diphyllobothrium cestodes in seals from the North and Baltic Sea over 26 years.

INTRODUCTION: Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) are infected by trophically transmitted intestinal cestodes of the genus Diphyllobothrium. Diphyllobothrium species can cause zoonotic infections in humans when larval stages are ingested with undercooked fish products. Diphyllobothriid cestode prevalence, infection dynamics, and health impact in phocid seals around densely populated coastal areas are little understood, and their species delineation remains challenging. METHODS: Data collected between 1996 and 2021 within the stranding network of the federal state

Phylogeography and host specificity of Pasteurellaceae pathogenic to sea-farmed fish in the north-east Atlantic.

The present study was undertaken to address the recent spate of pasteurellosis outbreaks among sea-farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Norway and Scotland, coinciding with sporadic disease episodes in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) used for delousing purposes in salmon farms. Genome assemblies from 86 bacterial isolates cultured from diseased salmon or lumpfish confirmed them all as bona fide members of the Pasteurellaceae family, with phylogenetic reconstruction dividing them into two distinct branches sharing <88% average nucleotide identity. These branches therefore constitute two separa
