Echinococcus multilocularis identified in Michigan with additional records from Ohio.

Echinococcus multilocularis was identified in a coyote in Indiana in January 1990, prompting an investigation of the distribution and prevalence of the parasite in wild canids in Indiana and surrounding states. In 1990-1991, the parasite was found throughout northern and central Indiana, in northwestern Ohio, and in east-central Illinois. In 1993-1994, 162 wild canids (97 red foxes, 54 coyotes, 11 gray foxes) were collected from Michigan, and an additional 75 (55 red foxes, 7 coyotes, 13 gray foxes) from Ohio, and examined for this parasite. Of these, 15 wild canids (6.3%) were found to be inf

A spatiotemporal analysis of liver cancer in the US (2010 - 2019).

BACKGROUND: Liver cancer remains an important issue of public health management in the United States, and the geographical differences in mortality indicators are noticeable. Understanding space-time models and basic risk factors is important for targeted public health mediation. METHODS: This study examined liver cancer mortality at the county level across the United States from 2010 to 2019. The disease surveillance software SatScan™ was employed to detect statistically significant purely spatial and temporal clusters of elevated liver cancer mortality counts and rates. The negative binomia

Habitat Suitability Model for the Distribution of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in Minnesota.

Ixodes scapularis Say, the black-legged tick, is the primary vector in the eastern United States of several pathogens causing human diseases including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. Over the past two decades, I. scapularis-borne diseases have increased in incidence as well as geographic distribution. Lyme disease exists in two major foci in the United States, one encompassing northeastern states and the other in the Upper Midwest. Minnesota represents a state with an appreciable increase in counties reporting I. scapularis-borne illnesses, suggesting geographic expansion of vector

Stream Mercury Export in Response to Contemporary Timber Harvesting Methods (Pacific Coastal Mountains, Oregon, USA).

Land-use activities can alter hydrological and biogeochemical processes that can affect the fate, transformation, and transport of mercury (Hg). Previous studies in boreal forests have shown that forestry operations can have profound but variable effects on Hg export and methylmercury (MeHg) formation. The Pacific Northwest is an important timber producing region that receives large atmospheric Hg loads, but the impact of forest harvesting on Hg mobilization has not been directly studied and was the focus of our investigation. Stream discharge was measured continuously, and Hg and MeHg concent

Molecular evidence that the range of the Vancouver Island outbreak of Cryptococcus gattii infection has expanded into the Pacific Northwest in the United States.

Cryptococcus neoformans frequently causes fungal meningitis in immunocompromised patients, whereas the related species C. gattii is restricted to tropical and subtropical regions, where it usually infects immunocompetent individuals. An outbreak of C. gattii infection that began in 1999 on Vancouver Island has resulted in endemic C. gattii infection and caused numerous human and veterinary infections; the outbreak's range has spread to mainland British Columbia. The outbreak-related isolates have been molecular type VGIIa, the major genotype, or VGIIb, the minor genotype. Since 2006, human and v

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma as an extra-hepatic manifestation of hepatitis C and co-infection of helicobacter pylori: A case report.

Along with infecting hepatocytes, the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is also a lymphotropic virus. Chronic HCV infection can mutate the Bcl2, a proto-oncogene that inhibits apoptosis. This causes continuous stimulation of B lymphocytes, which results in clonal growth of these immunoglobulin-producing cells. In Western countries, there is a well-documented link between HCV and lymphoproliferative illness. HCV and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) have been found to be significantly correlated in Europe, Japan, and the southern United States. There, however, has been no association found in central and northe

Darier's disease: a kindred with a large number of cases.

Over 70 cases of keratosis follicularis (Darier's disease) were noted in a study of a single kindred consisting of more than 200 individuals. Data were obtained through questionnaires, interviews and physical examinations. Results strongly support an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance since the ratio of affected to unaffected members was I:I and there were nearly equal numbers of males and females with this condition. Large sibships were common in this kindred, which extended over seven generations, and most of the affected individuals were located in the southwestern New York-northwestern

Prevalence of parasitism in client-owned dogs determined by fecal examinations in the Pacific northwest, United States, in 2021-2023.

It is important to continuously monitor the prevalence of parasitic infections in client-owned dogs. However, very limited information is available for the Pacific Northwest (PNW) region of the United States (US). Our main study objective was to determine the prevalence of parasitism observed in the feces of client-owned dogs in the PNW, US. Additionally, the prevalence of parasitic infections was statistically compared by sex, age, and seasonality. Results of all the fecal examinations with various methodologies performed at Zoetis Reference Laboratories in Mukilteo, Washington, from February

Mercury and methylmercury in aquatic sediment across western North America.

Large-scale assessments are valuable in identifying primary factors controlling total mercury (THg) and monomethyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations, and distribution in aquatic ecosystems. Bed sediment THg and MeHg concentrations were compiled for >16,000 samples collected from aquatic habitats throughout the West between 1965 and 2013. The influence of aquatic feature type (canals, estuaries, lakes, and streams), and environmental setting (agriculture, forest, open-water, range, wetland, and urban) on THg and MeHg concentrations was examined. THg concentrations were highest in lake (29.3±6.5μgkg

Odontogenic keratocyst: the northwestern USA experience.

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a cyst of tooth origin with an aggressive clinical behavior including a high recurrence rate. OKC demographics in the northwestern United States are presented and compared to those reported elsewhere. A total of 430 cases were obtained from 393 patients of the northwest region over a period of 15 years. Data evaluated included: site, gender, age, race, and association with bifid-rib basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin syndrome). Site distribution of the northwest group was similar to that of international groups. For the northwest group, the most common lesion loc

Timing the Origin of Cryptococcus gattii sensu stricto, Southeastern United States.

We conducted molecular clock analysis of whole-genome sequences from a set of autochthonous isolates of Cryptococcus gattii sensu stricto from the southeastern United States. Our analysis indicates that C. gattii arrived in the southeastern United States approximately 9,000-19,000 years ago, long before its arrival in the Pacific Northwest.

Woodland Decline Undermines Resilience in Fire-Adapted Landscapes.

Open-canopy forests and woodlands are a foundational component of historically fire-adapted landscapes, yet their persistence under contemporary climate and fire regimes remains poorly understood. Here, we leverage historical aerial photogrammetry integrated with contemporary satellite imagery to assess landscape change, vegetation transitions, and ecological stability over a century (1930s-2020s) for a large regional landscape of the Interior Northwest. We found woodlands declined by more than 40% across the region and exhibited high rates of type conversion, with roughly half converting to c

Babesiosis in Wisconsin: a potentially fatal disease.

Babesiosis is emerging as an important tick-borne zoonosis in the United States. Most reported cases of this parasitic disease have been acquired in the Northeast. To date, only two clinical cases of Babesia microti infection acquired in the upper Midwest have been described. We report eight more cases. Most if not all of the 10 total cases probably were acquired in northwestern Wisconsin. Three cases (30% of 10) we now report were fatal and occurred in elderly patients (65-75 years old) who died after complicated hospital courses. One patient probably had had a latent Babesia infection that a

Coccidioidal meningitis.

Residents of the area now occupied by the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico have had to deal with coccidioidomycosis and complicating meningitis for >1500 years. The hundredth anniversary of the reporting of disseminated coccidioidomycosis has just passed. This year has the dubious distinction of being the hundredth anniversary of the first description of coccidioidal meningitis. Although intrathecal amphotericin B began to be used for therapy 50 years ago, and although we have benefited from azole therapy for >10 years, the morbidity and mortality associated with this all-too

A case of tick-borne relapsing fever in pregnancy.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is an infection caused by Borrelia spirochetes. In North America, Borrelia hermsii is the most common cause for TBRF. This vector-borne disease is transmitted by Ornithodoros hermsi, a soft-bodied tick found in high altitudes in northwestern United States and southwestern Canada. Once bitten by the tick and infected by B. hermsii, episodes of fever alternating with afebrile periods can occur. A case of TBRF in a pregnant host was complicated by Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction requiring critical care. This case emphasizes the importance of maintaining a high index

Evaluating mediators of the impact of the Linking the Interests of Families and Teachers (LIFT) multimodal preventive intervention on substance use initiation and growth across adolescence.

Substance use outcomes were examined for 351 youth participating in a randomized controlled trial designed to assess the efficacy of a school-based multimodal universal preventive intervention, Linking the Interests of Families and Teachers (LIFT). Frequency of any use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs was assessed via self-report from grades 5 through 12. Latent variable growth models specified average level, linear growth and accelerated growth. The LIFT intervention had a significant effect on reducing the rate of growth in use of tobacco and illicit drugs, particularly for girls, and ha

Rates of putrefaction of dental pulp in the Northwest coast environment.

Cytological stability is of interest to criminal investigators in instances where remnants of soft tissue have been preserved, since such tissue can aid in the identification of human remains, helping to determine either the sex of the individual or his or her identity. This study based on seven experiments shows that, in Northwest coast outdoor environments in both summer (three experiments) and winter (three experiments), the stability of dental pulp nuclei ranges from 4 days to 2 weeks. The seventh experiment serves to describe the morphological sequence observed in nuclear putrefaction. Th
