In the current study the argyrophil staining technique for NOR proteins (Ag-NORs) has been performed on cases of different endometrial lesions, trying to find an aid in differentiating atypical hyperplasia from well differentiated carcinoma in biopsy specimens. We conclude that the Ag-NOR count, even though in endometrial carcinoma is significantly exceeding that of atypical hyperplastic endometrium, could be a misleading discriminator, because of a wide overlap of values in individual cases.

Silver-stained nucleolar organiser regions (AgNORs) were studied in 10 hyperplastic, 5 intra-epithelial neoplastic and 30 malignant prostatic lesions. Total AgNOR counts and types were compared with histological features. The total AgNOR count per nucleus was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) in prostatic intra-epithelial neoplasia (PIN) and adenocarcinoma compared with prostatic hyperplasia. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of hypoxia on the activity of nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in placentas obtained from healthy women and patients with late gestosis (pre-eclampsia). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) by the argyrophil NOR (AgNOR) technique on scrape cytology on breast lumps.
STUDY DESIGN: The study group consisted of 112 breast lumps that were sent for frozen section and included fibrocystic disease (52 cases), fibroadenomas (15 cases) and carcinomas (45 cases). Scrape cytology was performed on each case, and the number of AgNOR dots was recorded for 50 cells and the mean value calculated.

The histologic distinction between craniopharyngioma and epidermoid is equivocal. AgNORs were investigated in exfoliated cell smears from nasopharynx and in sections of biopsied tissues of NPC patients. It showed increased tendency of AgNOR activity that was significantly higher in carcinomas than in benign tumors, chronic nasopharyngitis, and normal nasopharyngeal tissues. This suggests that AgNOR technique of exfoliated cells might be useful for NPC diagnosis, follow-up of NPC patients, and identification of precancerous lesions of the nasopharynx.
