Beyond Facilitation: Reconceptualising the Psychiatric Nurse's Role in Shared Decision-Making.

From the perspective of psychiatric nursing, this discussion paper reconceptualises the role of psychiatric nurses in shared decision-making (SDM) in mental health care. Although psychiatric nurses are commonly described as facilitators, educators, advocates, coordinators, or supporters of SDM, these representations may underrecognise how knowledge developed through psychiatric nursing practice contributes to decision-making. Drawing on nursing epistemology and contemporary understandings of SDM, this paper conceptualises psychiatric nursing knowing as relational, interpretive, contextual, and

Clinical recognition and management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: the nurse's role.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, causes a progressive wasting and loss of the upper and lower motor neurons that facilitate the movement of body parts. At onset, ALS patients may show symptoms such as muscle weakness, atrophy, hyperreflexia, or bulbar symptoms such as dysphagia or dysarthria. Deterioration progresses rapidly, and the later stages of ALS are characterized by severely limited mobility and respiratory failure, which is the primary cause of death. There is no specific diagnostic test for ALS, and there are a number of other conditions that m

The Army chemical/biological SMART (SMART-CB) team: the nurse's role.

A chemical or biologic attack probably will be covert, rather than overt. Because presenting signs and symptoms may mimic minor nonspecific illnesses or naturally produced disease syndromes and may not appear for several days, it is likely that nurses in emergency rooms and primary care settings will be among the first to come into contact with victims of a chemical or biologic agent exposure. Early recognition, reporting, decontamination, self-protection, prophylaxis, and treatment are imperative. After the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, the anthrax incidents, and the heightened publ

Hyperdynamic therapy: the nurse's role in the treatment of cerebral vasospasm.

The onset of subtle diffuse ischemic neurological deficits often associated with cerebral vasospasm is a major cause of morbidity and mortality following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The exact etiology of cerebral vasospasm is unclear. Increasing intravascular volume, decreasing blood viscosity and inducing hypertension may help prevent or diminish neurological deficits from cerebral vasospasm by improving cerebral blood flow. An intensive multidisciplinary approach is necessary with the role of the neuroscience nurse being pivotal. An understanding of the subtle neurological changes su

Understanding Eating Disorders and the Nurse's Role in Diagnosis, Treatment, and Support.

Eating disorders (EDs) are a severe type of mental illness that nurses in many settings may encounter. The three primary eating disorders-anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder-are described here. Signs, symptoms, and treatment of eating disorders are outlined, along with the importance of nurses in early identification of EDs and developing therapeutic relationships with patients. A case study and elements of spiritual care are presented.

Beyond nutrition: the district nurse's role in addressing loneliness in enteral tube feeding.

Enteral tube feeding provides nutritional stability for individuals unable to meet requirements orally. However, the psychosocial consequences of enteral tube feeding, particularly loneliness arising from disrupted social eating practices, remain under-recognised in community care. Eating is a socially and culturally embedded activity linked to identity, belonging and relational connection. For individuals receiving long-term enteral tube feeding, altered participation in shared mealtimes and social rituals may increase vulnerability to isolation despite physiological stability. This article c

[AIDS. The trend of HIV/AIDS and the nurse's role in AIDS care].

Since the first case of AIDS was found among male homosexuals, the AIDS related problem has been in the male homosexual population, but the AIDS trend is changing from homosexuals to heterosexuals, with the majority of cases in the general population. Even though currently the reported HIV/AIDS cases in Korea are only 324 in Korea, the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS is projected to increase greatly over the next few years. As the number of these cases increases, there will be a major strain on nursing care resources. Since there is no known cure, the only way of halting this epidemic

The nurse's role in the prevention of cervical cancer among underserved and minority populations.

Since the implementation of the Papanicolaou test, there has been a significant decline in the incidence of cervical cancer over the last 50 years. Despite this reduction, each year there are approximately 11,000 women in the United States diagnosed with cervical cancer, the second most common type of cancer in women worldwide. Infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) is necessary for the development of precancerous lesions and the progression to cervical cancer. For those diagnosed with an HPV infection or cervical cancer, a considerable personal and financial burden often results.

Continuous infusion chemotherapy in the ambulatory setting: the nurse's role in patient selection and education.

Continuous infusion therapy (CIT) is an alternative to traditional intravenous bolus or brief infusion chemotherapy. The benefits of CIT are improved therapeutic index, reduced toxicity, and modification of drug resistance. CIT administered in the ambulatory setting fosters cost effectiveness and improved patient satisfaction. Nurses use their clinical skill and judgement to assess potential CIT patients prior to treatment for self-care ability and to prepare them for treatment. Topics to include in patient education are care of the vascular access device, introduction to CIT, toxicities and s
