Fracture of the neck of femur, or hip, has become common in older females and the resulting pain is often a factor in inhibiting early mobilization following surgical repair. Since the administration of analgesia is dependant upon decision-making of the nurse, this study concentrated on what influences nurses in the administration of analgesia to patients following surgical repair of a fractured hip. A review of the literature identifies the main influencing factors as nurses' lack of knowledge and the drug prescription, and suggests that education is the key enabler. However, much of this res

BACKGROUND: Research shows that poor provider-client interactions in maternity and child health (MCH) continue to affect health outcomes, service uptake, continuity of care, and trust in formal healthcare systems.
OBJECTIVE: The study's objective was to jointly create a prototype intervention package for enhancing nurse-client relationships using human centered design (HCD) approach.
METHODS: A five-step HCD methodology was used: (1) Community-driven discovery through qualitative descriptive research methods using 9 focus groups with nurses and clients and 12 key informant interviews with MC

BACKGROUND: As a first-level discipline, nursing plays an increasingly important role in China's healthcare system, and its sustainable development has become a key focus of current nursing research. The existing research on nursing discipline development is mostly quantitative analysis and lacks depth, failing to fully explore the experiences of nursing managers in practice and the influencing factors. This study adopted a descriptive phenomenological qualitative research design to explore the obstacles and promoting factors in nursing discipline construction and used Herzberg's Two-Factor Th

Clinical reports rave about the efficacy of sublingual morphine, but most research data suggest that sublingual morphine lacks the necessary physical characteristics to be absorbed through sublingual tissues. This article clarifies these assertions by reviewing the clinical literature that supports sublingual administration, the theories relevant to sublingual morphine administration, and the pharmacokinetic research that supports or negates the benefit of this route. Recommendations for clinical nursing practice are provided to guide decision-making in care of patients with cancer pain.

BACKGROUND: Enteral tubes are frequently inserted as part of medical treatment in a wide range of patient situations. Patients with an enteral tube are cared for by nurses in a variety of settings, including general and specialised acute care areas, aged care facilities and at home. Regardless of the setting, nurses have the primary responsibility for administering medication through enteral tubes. Medication administration via an enteral tube is a reasonably common nursing intervention that entails a number of skills, including preparing the medication, verifying the tube position, flushing t

Nursing is considered indigent and oppressed because of uneven organizational hierarchies and unsatisfactory work environments. This study aimed to highlight the critical aspects of organizational culture in the nursing profession and, in general, those propagating hostile behaviours among female nursing staff that result in dissatisfaction and intention to leave the organization. A quantitative research approach was applied and a survey research strategy was used to collect the data. Convenience sampling was applied and data were collected from female nurses who were easily accessible and wil

Individuals who experience auditory hallucinations (AH) frequently report hearing unpleasant voices saying disturbing things to them, making derogatory remarks about them, or commanding them to do something, including harming themselves or someone else. The Self-Management of Unpleasant Auditory Hallucinations Practice Model was developed to help psychiatric-mental health nurses in both inpatient and outpatient settings implement evidence-based nursing care for voice hearers who are distressed by unpleasant voices. The model's utility extends to nursing education, administration, and research.

AIM: This paper focuses on implications for nurse managers to support midwives in delivering nursing care to immigrant mothers in some government hospitals in Gauteng, South Africa.
BACKGROUND: Immigration and poverty in Africa has led to midwives providing nursing care to immigrant mothers in a culturally sensitive environment. This necessitates an environment in which nurse managers should support midwives in caring for these mothers as unique individuals.
METHOD: An exploratory, descriptive phenomenological design was followed. The target population included nine immigrant mothers living

OBJECTIVE: This aim of this study was to understand the lived experiences of millennial-aged nurse leaders in acute care settings.
BACKGROUND: As the largest generation in the nursing workforce, millennial-aged nurses are moving into nursing leadership roles as nurses of the baby boomer generation retire. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated advancements in healthcare, but also heightened a fragile nursing profession, where nurses' resilience and nurse leaders' resilience were fully tested.
METHODS: Van Manen's approach to phenomenology guided the interviews of 10 participants.
RESULTS: Three

BACKGROUND: Nurse burnout during COVID-19 has been well studied; however, limited research exists on the impact of hospital administrators' interventions on trauma nurses' perceptions of burnout and value during staffing crises.
OBJECTIVE: To examine contributors to burnout and explore administrative interventions affecting trauma nurses' perceived value during COVID-19.
METHODS: This exploratory, sequential mixed-methods study was conducted in 2 phases at a Level II trauma center in the western United States from January 2022 to January 2024. In phase 1, qualitative data from 13 semi-struct

AIM: To increase our understanding of challenges in implementing multidisciplinary organisational models in hospitals.
BACKGROUND: Health-service policies internationally are pushing for multidisciplinary and patient-centred organising models but there are challenges involved in moving from profession- and discipline-based organising to the new solutions.
METHOD: Qualitative case study, interview and document data collected in real time following the implementation process.

PROBLEM: Wearable technology is here and nurses are going to be increasingly responsible for patients who use it. Most research in this area has been done in other fields and now is the time for nurses to be more involved in this promising technology to improve patient lives.
METHODS: This paper synthesizes the current state of wearable technology, a brief history of nurse satisfaction with technology, current research about wearable technology, and implications for its future use in nursing.
FINDINGS: Other areas in health care are already employing wearable technology to improve gait in pe

Achieving optimal and safe pain-management practices in the nursing home setting continues to challenge administrators, nurses, physicians, and other health care providers. Several factors in nursing home settings complicate the conduct of clinical process improvement research. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of a sample of Colorado nursing home staff who participated in a study to develop and evaluate a multifaceted pain-management intervention. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 103 staff from treatment and control nursing homes, audiotaped, an
