Critical care nurses' role in implementing the "ABCDE bundle" into practice.

Imagine working in an environment where all patients undergoing mechanical ventilation are alert, calm, and delirium free. Envision practicing in an environment where nonvocal patients can effectively express their need for better pain control, repositioning, or emotional reassurance. Picture an intensive care unit where a nurse-led, interprofessional team practices evidence-based, patient-centered care focused on preserving and/or restoring their clients' physical, functional, and neurocognitive abilities. A recently proposed bundle of practices for the intensive care unit could advance the c

Hypericum and nurses: a comprehensive literature review on the efficacy of St. John's Wort in the treatment of depression.

PURPOSE: Many patients look to complementary and alternative medicine for a herbal solution to depression. This literature review summarizes recently published research on the treatment of depression using St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum). CONCLUSIONS: The compounds in St. John's wort herbal preparations are more effective than placebo and, in several studies, more effective than common antidepressant medications in treating minor depression. However, the efficacy of St. John's wort for treating major depression, cyclothymia, or bipolar disorder is less evident. Although some studies ar

[Theories of nursing professionals about the elderly].

Our study emphasizes the implicit theories of nursing professionals about the elderly and their influence on nursing behavior styles. According to our central hypothesis we expected a correlation between the differentiation of attitudes towards the elderly and the quality of nursing interventions. By means of a new methodological approach based on Forgas' theory of "social episodes" we investigated attitudes towards the elderly and behavior intentions in specific nursing situations. The sample consists of 133 professionals working in nursing homes for the elderly or in home care services. In a

Registered nurses' experiences of interaction with patients with mental health challenges in medical wards in Johannesburg.

AIM: The aims of this research were to explore and describe registered nurses' experiences of interacting with patients with mental health challenges in the medical wards of a public hospital in Johannesburg. BACKGROUND: Nurses are the major providers of hospital care and have become an important resource in the delivery of mental health care to patients with mental health challenges. However, the attitude and ability of many nurses in providing this care have been shown to be poor. METHOD: In-depth phenomenological interviews were conducted with eight female registered nurses working in fou

Caregiver-infant interaction--comforting post-operative neonates.

Analysis of 40 h of videotaped caregiving to four male infants was conducted using ethology. All infants were full term and had major chest surgery 12 h previously. All incidents of caregiver-infant interaction were examined, and the verbal and tactile comforting behavior of the caregiver was coded for duration, context, infant cue and infant state prior and following the interaction. A total of 191 comforting incidents occurred during the study. Stroking was the most common form of touch used. Most of the comforting (60%) was given in the context of caregiving; sleeping infants were touched o

Recognizing craniosynostosis.

Craniosynostosis is characterized by the fusion of sutures. It presents with an abnormal head shape. This article examines this defect and discusses its embryologic origin. A systemic physical assessment guide serves as a tool to enhance early recognition of this defect. Pictorial examples increase understanding of the defect. A discussion of treatment and nursing implications, with an emphasis on family support, is provided.

Follow-up study of people who misuse alcohol: reflections on methodology.

Background Considerable challenges exist for researchers attempting to monitor longitudinally the impact of any intervention on heavy drinkers, therefore they are often excluded from surveys. A particular challenge is the loss of validity through attrition. Aim To describe issues encountered when recruiting and re-contacting difficult to reach heavy drinkers participating in a longitudinal study; and propose strategies to inform the design of future studies to minimise the effects of confounding factors. Discussion Baseline recruitment exceeded targets, but attrition at first follow-up intervi

Nurses' experience caring for anencephalic infants who are potential organ donors.

A descriptive study explored the experience, attitudes, and concerns of 75 nurses who gave direct care to anencephalic infants in a program of potential organ donors. One ethical issue for a majority of nurses was concern about whether the program allowed dignity for the life of the infant. Other concerns were whether the infants felt pain, and the infants' physiological responses.

Transforming the Experience of Mirror Viewing for Individuals Faced With Disfiguring Injuries.

PURPOSE/AIMS: This study explored the feasibility of educating nurses on an emotionally sensitive topic using video. The aim was to educate nurses on how to assist individuals who have had an amputation of a limb in viewing themselves in the mirror. DESIGN: One-group repeated-measures design with 2 time points (pretest and posttest at 1 month). METHODS: Nurses viewed a video in which 8 amputee actors described how and why nurses should support individuals' viewing of self in the mirror following amputation. RESULTS: This video-based education was feasible, and recommendations were made for

The grieving mother: care in the community?

The assumption is sometimes made that the mother's own home is the most appropriate place for the grieving mother to begin to mourn her loss. For this reason she may be transferred with undue haste. We must ask why this assumption is made and whether the mother participates in the decision to return home. Other's research suggests that the community may not be able to provide the support which the mother needs and may even make excessive demands of her. The midwife's visits to the mother's home provide an important opportunity to care for the mother, although this opportunity may not always be

Heparin solution for maintaining peripheral venous catheter patency in children: a survey of current practice in Italian pediatric units.

BACKGROUND: Prolonging the duration of peripheral venous catheters (PVC) as long as possible in children is a nursing priority. However, available studies provide conflicting evidence on what kind of flush/lock solution should be used to increase the life of PVCs in children. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical behavior of nurses working in Italian pediatric units with regards to PVCs flushing and locking practices. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Nurses were invited to participate using the network of the Italian Society of Pediatric Nursing Science. Those participating completed an online

The contested work place: reactions to hospital based RNs doing degrees.

This article focuses on the findings from a research project investigating hospital based RNs' attitudes and reactions to nursing degrees. Specifically, the results describe the tension and hostility which was predominating in clinical settings when the research was conducted. The reactions of both degree and non-degree nurses to the changes in nursing education are put forward. It is suggested by the author that while work environments have been characterised by destructive behaviours, nurses' verbalising their reactions to this situation, have provided a platform to deal more constructively

Educational support for nursing and midwifery students with dyslexia.

AIM: This article sets out to begin the process of discussing and investigating the support of nursing students and midwives with dyslexia. METHOD: The method is informed by grounded theory using a survey of universities through email contact with members of the Council of Deans (CoD). RESULTS: Twenty eight universities responded to the survey, representing 46 per cent of the CoD membership and 40 per cent of the universities offering nursing and midwifery courses. The results show a wide variation of support available to students within financial constraints. Many universities offer support
