MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a descriptive study carried out in the ICUs of a multispecialty general hospital. A convenient sample of 220 nurses was recruited after obtaining written informed consent. Knowledge regarding delir

Use of catheter maintenance solutions by community nursing staff: an assessment.

This article discusses catheter maintenance solutions, the way they are supposed to be used and the way they actually are being used in primary and community care in the UK. It discusses the knowledge that community nursing staff have regarding these solutions and the need for further education. Appropriate assessment from a suitably trained individual is recommended, resulting in both usage and cost being dramatically decreased, offering more appropriate management and the likelihood of decreasing the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). The literature surroundin

Association of low back pain with presenteeism in hospital nursing staff.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is known to cause various disorders compared with acute LBP. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between acute or chronic LBP and presenteeism in hospital nursing staff. METHODS: Overall, 1100 nurses filled in a questionnaire on basic attributes, LBP symptoms, depression symptoms, and work productivity. The subjects were divided into three groups based on the period of LBP and the compared work productivity. Work Limit

Oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviour among nursing staff in Lesotho.

The decreasing prevalence of oral diseases in industrialised countries is attributed to a paradigm shift of oral health services from being mainly curative to preventative care. In under-resourced countries, the use of non-oral health care workers in the promotion of oral health, can contribute substantially to improving oral health and the adoption of a multidisciplinary team approach in oral health is highly recommended. Owing to the inadequate number of oral health personnel in Lesotho, the use of health care workers other than oral health care workers has been investigated. Nurses are one

Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) education of residential care nursing staff: Impact on staff and residents.

Approximately 40% of older adults drink alcohol. Older adults living in community care residences are a vulnerable population at risk for alcohol use related problems especially for those age 65 years and older who are taking medications, have health problems, and have risky alcohol consumption. Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based approach for individuals at risk for alcohol use disorders. A quality improvement project evaluated SBIRT education effects on nursing staff knowledge and attitudes related to alcohol use, and resident alcohol use. Th

Better palliative care for residents of inpatient nursing homes through qualification of nursing staff - a cluster randomised study.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, 80-90% of people require palliative care in the final stages of life. Inpatient care facilities are increasingly becoming the final place of residence for many people, and therefore also often their place of death. Inadequate identification of palliative care needs can result in substandard palliative care in nursing homes, where residents are often admitted to the hospital towards the end of their lives. This study investigated whether a special palliative care qualifications for nursing staff could improve the care for residents in inpatient care facilities. METHODS:
