A prospective comparative study of five measures of gluten-free diet adherence in adults with coeliac disease.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of individuals are now being diagnosed with coeliac disease. The only accepted treatment for coeliac disease is lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet (GFD). Individuals' ability to adhere to the GFD varies, but systematic studies guiding the assessment of adherence are currently lacking. AIM: We sought to compare the predictive value of self-report and four serologic tests compared to expert nutritionist evaluation. METHODS: In all, 154 individual adults with biopsy-proven coeliac disease rated their adherence to the GFD on a Likert scale. Serum antib

Position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Micronutrient Supplementation.

It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that micronutrient supplements are warranted when requirements are not being met through the diet alone. Those with increased requirements secondary to growth, chronic disease, medication use, malabsorption, pregnancy and lactation, and aging may be at particular risk for inadequate dietary intakes. However, the routine and indiscriminate use of micronutrient supplements for the prevention of chronic disease is not recommended, given the lack of available scientific evidence. A few specific age and disease states that may benefit fro

Dietitian-Led Feeding Tube Placement: Reducing Nursing Workload and Enhancing Patient Safety in the Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, health care systems nationally are adopting innovative strategies to streamline nursing care while optimizing outcomes. Concurrently, registered dietitian nutritionists are seeking opportunities to maximize their professional contribution and underscore their value as part of the interprofessional health care team. Implementing a feeding tube placement program led by registered dietitian nutritionists, rather than nurses, might enhance patient safety and enable dietitians to practice at an expert level while affording nurses more time for other

Review of the Effectiveness of the Nutrition Care Process.

This author (A.I.) has witnessed the introduction of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) and its subsequent adjustment over 10 y of her career in an acute and critical setting. A.I. observed that the NCP went through several revisions to better suit the actual clinical practices and the NCP was gradually incorporated into everyday work and accepted in a clinical setting. The NCP helped ensure that all practicing registered dietitians (RDs, RDNs) have up-to-date skill sets. The NCP is a systematic problem-solving tool with four distinct and interrelated steps that help RDs to improve critical thin

"Outsourcing Accreditation of Dietetics Education: Why a National Conversation Is Needed".

In 2021, the Alliance of Dietetic Regulatory Bodies in Canada announced they were outsourcing accreditation of dietetics education programs to a third-party provider. Educators questioned the lack of due diligence in exploring alternatives, limited involvement from the profession, minimal inclusion of dietetics expertise within the selected accreditation body, and the absence of mechanisms to monitor and assess the new accreditation process. This commentary shares the views of two dietetic educators who identify the key stakeholders involved, describe enablers that likely contributed to the re

Problems related to diet management of maternal phenylketonuria.

Provision of nutritionally complete elemental diets for pregnant women with PKU requires greater knowledge of 'conditionally' essential nutrient requirements than is presently available as well as application of known information. Formulation of elemental products needs to be improved to enhance aroma and taste and to decrease osmolality. Designers of the metal and vitamin components should keep in mind that a major portion (70-80%) of most of these nutrients must be obtained from the elemental products. Thus deletion of suspected essential minerals or vitamins could cause serious deficiencies

Early dietitian referral in lung cancer: use of machine learning.

OBJECTIVES: The Dietetic Assessment and Intervention in Lung Cancer (DAIL) study was an observational cohort study. It triaged the need for dietetic input in patients with lung cancer, using questionnaires with 137 responses. This substudy tested if machine learning could predict need to see a dietitian (NTSD) using 5 or 10 measures. METHODS: 76 cases from DAIL were included (Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust; RSH: 56, Frimley Park Hospital; FPH 20). Univariate analysis was used to find the strongest correlates with NTSD and 'critical need to see a dietitian' CNTSD. Those with a Spearman corr

Educational Intervention Boosts Dietitians' Knowledge of the Safety and Approval of Low- and No-Calorie Sweeteners.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCSs) provide sweetness in food applications that are suggested to support consumers' reduced consumption of caloric sweeteners and added sugar intake. Consumers seek guidance and advice on using LNCSs from healthcare providers, including dietitians and nutritionists. However, prior research suggests there may be inconsistent guidance on the use of LNCSs. The main goal is to assess dietitians' and nutritionists' perceptions and knowledge of LNCSs. We also evaluate the impact of educational intervention on the perceptions and knowledge of

Pathways to specialist care for eating disorders: An Italian multicentre study.

Two hundred forty six patients with eating disorders (EDs) recruited from eight Italian specialized treatment centres were administered with the World Health Organization "Encounter Form," a standardized schedule that makes it possible to characterize the clinical pathways that patients follow to reach specialized care. The median time from symptoms onset to specialized care was 114 weeks. Primary "points of access to care" were general practitioners (25%), psychiatrists (18%), and clinical nutritionists (17%), followed by various other carers. All patients received specific psychotherapy, whe

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disorder in which patients are at high risk for both pulmonary and systemic complications of their disease. Medical nutrition therapy by a registered dietitian nutritionist can be an integral component of lifestyle treatment targeted at maintaining and improving outcomes, such as lung function, mortality, and quality of life. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Academy) convened an expert workgroup to conduct a systematic review to update the COPD Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guideline. This publication outlines the Ac
