Obsessive-compulsive disorder in dermatology.

Patients with obsessive-compulsive (OCD) and related disorders - primarily trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder, and skin picking disorder - frequently present to dermatologists due to associated hair and skin symptoms. It is therefore crucial that dermatologists be familiar with these disorders. In this review article, we provide an update on clinical features, neurobiology factors, and treatment options for OCD spectrum disorders. Employing PubMed and Cochrane Library databases, a selective literature search was conducted using keywords related to dermatological disorders within the OC

Blepharospasm and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Although essential blepharospasm is considered to be a form of focal dystonia, many patients with blepharospasm have been noted to have concomitant depression, anxiety, phobias, hypochondriasis, and other emotional and behavioral disorders, suggesting a psychiatric component to the disease that is phenomenologically similar to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in terms of the repetitive, perseverative, and persistent nature of the symptoms. The Maudsley OCD questionnaire was administered to 21 patients with blepharospasm and 19 normal controls. The blepharospasm patients scored significantly

Clomipramine for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder affects about 2 percent of the U.S. population and can be quite disabling. Clomipramine is the only drug approved for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Its efficacy is unique among tricyclic antidepressants and may be related to its relatively high potency in affecting serotonergic neurotransmission. The drug has many anticholinergic effects, but it is relatively well tolerated by the patients for whom it is effective. A 0.4 percent incidence of seizures, a potentially serious side effect, has been observed. Other antidepressants that are relatively

Epidemiology of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Until the early 1980s, the only estimate of the prevalence of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in the general population was 0.05%. Data collected from the Epidemiology Catchment Area (ECA) survey have suggested that OCD is 50 to 100 times more common than previously believed and twice as common as schizophrenia or panic disorder in the general population. These results have been corroborated in a second, more carefully designed epidemiologic study. Several reasons account for the previous underestimation of the prevalence of the disorder: (1) reluctance of patients to divulge their symptom

Compulsivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder and addictions.

Compulsive behaviors are driven by repetitive urges and typically involve the experience of limited voluntary control over these urges, a diminished ability to delay or inhibit these behaviors, and a tendency to perform repetitive acts in a habitual or stereotyped manner. Compulsivity is not only a central characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) but is also crucial to addiction. Based on this analogy, OCD has been proposed to be part of the concept of behavioral addiction along with other non-drug-related disorders that share compulsivity, such as pathological gambling, skin-pick

Obsessive-compulsive spectrum conditions in obsessive-compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders.

In light of current interest in an obsessive-compulsive spectrum of disorders, this study sought to determine whether comorbidity patterns support the unique relationship hypothesized between these conditions and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Comparisons were made of lifetime rates of several proposed spectrum conditions in individuals with one of three anxiety disorder principal diagnoses (OCD, social phobia, or panic disorder [PD], N=277). Spectrum conditions examined included tic-related disorders, trichotillomania, skin picking, and eating disorders, with analyses performed on rates

Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and in Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Occurrence and Correlations.

OBJECTIVE: Because of the heterogeneity of obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCDs) and their co-occurrence with anxiety disorders, we investigated the prevalence, severity, and correlations between obsessive and compulsive symptoms reported by patients diagnosed with OCD or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in 2 groups of patients: 76 patients diagnosed with OCD [F42 according to the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10)], and 186 patients diagnosed with GAD (F41.1 according t

The association between obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive compulsive personality disorder: prevalence and clinical presentation.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) has been the subject of interest for some time due to the historical assumption that OCPD causes OCD. This study systematically examined the association between OCD and OCPD in terms of prevalence and clinical presentation. The specificity of the association between OCD and OCPD was investigated relative to another axis I anxiety disorder (Panic disorder). DESIGN AND METHOD: Data for this study were drawn from measures taken at initial assessment at a specialist treatm

Is obsessive-compulsive disorder an anxiety disorder?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is classified as an anxiety disorder in the DSM-IV-TR [American Psychiatric Association, 2000. Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, Fourth ed., rev. Washington, DC: Author]; however, the notion of a spectrum of obsessive-compulsive (OC) related disorders that is comprised of such disparate disorders as OCD, body dysmorphic disorder, certain eating disorders, pathological gambling, and autism, is gaining acceptance. The fact that these disorders share obsessive-compulsive features and evidence similarities in patient characteristics, course,

THE RELATIONSHIP OF OBSESSIONS AND COMPULSIONS WITH AGGRESSION IN PATIENTS WITH OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder that is frequently encountered in the clinic and affects the functionality of patients significantly. Patients with higher levels of aggression have lower treatment compliance and recovery rates for their current mental illnesses. In our study, the relationships between OCD and its subtypes and aggression were examined. A total of 87 patients with OCD were included in the study. Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) were applied to the patients. In this study, the relationship

OCD: obsessive-compulsive … disgust? The role of disgust in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Recent research has identified the important role of disgust in the symptomatology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Exaggerated and inappropriate disgust reactions may drive some of the symptoms of OCD, and in some cases, may even eclipse feelings of anxiety. This paper reviews behavioural and neuroimaging research that recognizes the prominent role of disgust in contributing to OCD symptoms, especially contamination-based symptoms. We discuss how elevated behavioural and biological markers of disgust reported in OCD populations support the need for alternative clinical treatment strate

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and related disorders in Parkinson's disease.

This study evaluated the frequency of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS), and related disorders (e.g., tic disorders, trichotillomania, and body dysmorphic disorder) in 100 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 100 individually matched controls. When compared with controls, OCD, OCS, and related disorders were not higher in PD. Findings revealed an association of some OCS with left side motor symptom predominance in PD patients, particularly for symmetry and ordering/arranging. These findings suggest that the right hemisphere likely functions in the e

Treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive-related disorders (OCRD).

The purpose of this article is to present an overview of current knowledge on the treatment of obsessive-compulsive and obsessive-compulsive-related disorders (OCRD - according to DSM-5). The article presents commonly used pharmacological treatments and psychotherapy, as well as surgical and other forms of treatment. According to the analyses that have been made, the variety of responses to the pharmacological treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) depending on the kinds of symptoms is not relevant enough to justify these other forms of treatment. Instead, the choice of medication s

[Diversity of obsessive-compulsive disorder and pharmacotherapy associated with obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders].

Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRI) are effective in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The response rate for SRI is approximately 50% and refractory OCD may exist. The effect of antipsychotics augmentation therapy has been established for this kind of patients. However, OCD is clinically and biologically heterogeneous neuropsychiatric disease and it will affect the response of pharmacotherapy. Several subtypes of OCD have been identified. Early onset OCD and hoarding symptoms dominant patients with OCD tend to resist SRI treatment. Antipsychotics augmentation with SRI is mu

Obsessive-compulsive or addiction? Categorical diagnostic analysis of excoriation disorder compared to obsessive-compulsive disorder and gambling disorder.

Excoriation disorder (ED) is currently classified in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders' Obsessive-compulsive and Related Disorders section (OCRD). However, there remain debates regarding whether ED is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or whether it is better conceptualized as a behavioral addiction. The present research compared the diagnostic overlap and psychiatric comorbidities of 121 individuals seeking treatment for ED (n = 40), OCD (n = 41) and gambling disorder (GD) (n = 40). ED was more likely to overlap with OCD (n = 14) than GD

Seven-year stability of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder symptom criteria in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) commonly co-occurs with personality disorders, particularly obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). Recent research suggests that personality disorders, especially OCPD, might not be as stable as once thought. The current study investigates the longitudinal stability of OCPD diagnosis and individual symptom criteria in individuals with OCD. Around 320 participants with a primary diagnosis of OCD were included in the study, with diagnostic assessments conducted annually for 7 years. Logistic mixed-effects models were conducted to examine the relatio
