An occupational group with multiple musculoskeletal trauma and precarious employment: jockeys.

Jockeys endure considerable physical and psychological demands, rendering them vulnerable to occupational injuries such as fractures, concussions, and soft tissue damage. This descriptive case series presents the medical and occupational histories of three professional jockeys with long-term disabilities following work-related accidents. Each individual commenced their jockey career in early adolescence. All sustained head trauma from horse falls and had histories of hospitalization due to injuries incurred while riding. Documented injuries included rib, vertebral, clavicular, and upper extrem

Basal cell carcinoma in farmers: an occupation group at high risk.

INTRODUCTION: Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer type worldwide, and 80 % of skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The main risk factor for developing BCC is exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), particularly high-dose exposure at a young age. Outdoor workers, particularly farmers, are at high risk of developing BCC. However, studies of BCC in this population are scant. OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively evaluate all cases of BCC of the head and neck region treated during the years 2007-2013 at our hospital in Poland, and to compare the tumour characteristics in farmers to

Factors associated with Type II trauma in occupational groups working with traumatised children: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that "Type II trauma" (TTT) - repeated exposure to traumatic events - can lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). TTT frequently occurs in occupational groups working with children who are themselves victims of trauma. AIM: To conduct a systematic review identifying risk factors for/protective factors against TTT-associated mental ill-health in employees working with traumatised children and explore how this type of work impacts upon social functioning. METHOD: Databases were searched for relevant studies and supplemented by hand search

[The immune structure of occupational groups of the population in relation to Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1].

The immune structure of different professional groups with respect to L. pneumophila has been studied. A wide spread of Legionella infection among subway construction workers, subway personnel and railroad conductors has been established, which makes it possible to regard these professions as high risk groups susceptible to Legionella infection. The risk factors for this group are as follows: work in the atmosphere of high dust content with air supply by means of air conditioners, contact with soil in the process of earthwork. The bacteriological study of water samples obtained in dining cars

Interaction of childhood trauma with BDNF and FKBP5 gene polymorphisms in predicting burnout in general occupational groups.

Both the BDNF gene rs6265 and the FKBP5 gene rs1360780 polymorphisms are independently associated with adult psychotic-like experiences, when exposed to high childhood abuse; however, it remains unclear whether the relationship between childhood abuse and burnout is moderated by these two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Furthermore, there is an interaction between glucocorticoid receptor transcriptional activity and BDNF signaling. Therefore, we investigated the interaction of these two SNPs with childhood trauma in predicting burnout. We recruited 990 participants (mean age 33.06 year

Prevalence of antibodies to Brucella spp. and risk factors related to high-risk occupational groups in Eritrea.

In a study of three high-risk occupational groups using Rose Bengal and complement fixation tests, the highest prevalence (7.1%) was found among dairy farm workers and owners in randomly selected dairy-cattle farms, followed by veterinary personnel (4.5%) and inhabitants in pastoralist areas (3.0%). There was no evidence for significant differences between the three populations. Among dairy farm workers, a higher risk was associated with the presence of sheep in the farm (OR = 13.2, CI = 2.2-76.7). In the pastoral area, a high risk was linked to having close contact with animals (OR = 6.32, CI

Role of family susceptibility, occupational and family histories and individuals' blood groups in the development of silicosis.

A previous investigation has shown that family susceptibility and occupational and family histories have a decisive role in the development of byssinosis among workers exposed to flax dust. Results of investigation of silicosis in 814 male workers exposed to silica-bearing dust showed that family susceptibility has an important role in the development of silicosis among examined workers, and workers whose fathers had an occupational history of exposure to silica-bearing dust were more resistant to the development of the disease than those with non-exposed fathers. The degree of consanguinity o

Supported-employment practice in the UK: evidence about an emerging occupational group.

PURPOSE: This paper reports the findings from a UK survey of 519 practitioners of employment support and rehabilitation for disabled people. METHOD: A structured examination of where practitioners worked, who their clients were and what models they operated. It explored training needs, attitudes to disability and current practice in terms of an 'adherence scale' based on supported employment principles. RESULTS: Respondents were from a wide range of agencies, and the supported-employment model was common. The majority of respondents worked in the voluntary sector, where both perceived needs

[Manicurists and pedicurists - occupation group at high risk of work-related dermatoses].

In recent years occupational skin and respiratory diseases have been more and more frequently diagnosed in small production and service enterprises. The awareness of occupational exposure and its possible health effects among their workers and employers is not sufficient. Beauty salons, in addition to hairdressers and beauticians, frequently employ manicurists and pedicurists. The workers often happen to perform various activities interchangeably. the health status of beauty salons workers has rarely been assessed. The most numerous reports concern hairdressers. In this occupational group, the

[Recommendations for non-occupational postexposure HIV prophylaxis. Spanish Working Group on Non-Occupational Postexposure HIV Prophylaxis of the Catalonian Center for Epidemiological Studies on AIDS and the AIDS Study Group].

Evidence is lacking on the possible efficacy and effectiveness of non-occupational postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). However, because of its biological plausibility, the use of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to prevent the development of infection in certain cases of accidental or sporadic exposure has begun to be considered as common clinical practice. Previous studies performed in Spain have demonstrated both the demand and the prescription of ARV as PEP and especially the diversity and inconsistency in the criteria used. In this context, in April of 2000 the Centre for Epidemiological Studies on

Prevalence of Rift Valley fever immunoglobulin G antibody in various occupational groups before the 2007 outbreak in Tanzania.

A cross-sectional sero survey of 199 apparently healthy persons from various occupations was carried out in Tanga, Tanzania in November 2004 to investigate exposure to Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus. Sera were tested for the presence of antibodies to RVF virus by the inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting immunoglobulin G (IgG). All reactive sera were further tested by the capture ELISA test and specific RVF immunoglobulin M (IgM) assay. Eight (4.0%) tested positive for IgG and none of the samples tested positive for IgM. Among the occupational groups examined, the s
