Work overcommitment during COVID-19 pandemic and mental illness among occupational physicians.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are prevalent among medical professionals, significantly impacting their well-being and resilience, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model indicates that an imbalance between work efforts and rewards, coupled with overcommitment, can lead to increased stress and mental health issues. AIMS: This research aims to analyse the association between psychosocial factors, assessed through the ERI model, and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress among physicians working in occupational health services in Brazil during the COVI

Industrial accidents: some medical problems of the Industrial Accident Commission.

The Industrial Accident Commission is dependent on reports of physicians for the prompt and equitable handling of industrial injury cases.Sometimes medical reports are inadequate for commission purposes. Among the more frequent inadequacies are: (1) Failure to use the commission's standard method of measuring and recording disability. (2) Inadequate description and evaluation of subjective complaints. (3) Failure to give estimate of normal, in the case of bilateral extremity injuries. Physicians can help the injured person, the employer and the Industrial Accident Commission by considering rep

Occupational medicine--then and now: where we could go from here.

Occupational medicine has a long-standing history in the region of the former Yugoslavia with seminal contributions to the theory and practice of this discipline. This tradition should be expanded to incorporate psychosocial stressors. We review the sociological work stress models and empirical evidence gleaned thereby, and then the occupational stressor index, an additive burden model developed from a cognitive ergonomics perspective. In numerous studies, the occupational stressor index is significantly associated with risk behaviors: smoking, obesity and sedentariness and clinical outcomes:

Evaluation research in occupational health services: general principles and a systematic review of empirical studies.

OBJECTIVES: To study the nature and extent of evaluation research in occupational health services (OHSs). METHODS: Literature review of evaluation research in OHSs. On the basis of a conceptual model of OHS evaluation, empirical studies are categorised into aspects of input, process, output, outcome, and OHS core activities. RESULTS: Many methods to evaluate OHSs or OHS activities exist, depending on the objective and object of evaluation. The amount of empirical studies on evaluation of OHSs or OHS activities that met the non-restrictive inclusion criteria, was remarkably limited. Most of t

Occupational contact dermatitis in the UK: a surveillance report from EPIDERM and OPRA.

Since February 1993 the EPIDERM surveillance scheme has collected data on occupational skin disease from consultant dermatologists in the UK. Reporting by occupational physicians to the scheme began in May 1994 and was superseded in January 1996 by the Occupational Physicians Reporting Activity (OPRA). The schemes currently receive reports on incident cases from 244 dermatologists and 790 occupational physicians. An estimated total of 9937 cases of contact dermatitis reported by dermatologists was calculated from surveillance data; 8129 contact dermatitis cases were estimated from reports by o

Chelation therapy in workers with lead exposure.

Occupational lead overexposure remains a major problem. To evaluate the settings in which physicians appropriately prescribe chelation therapy for lead exposure, 7 cases were identified from physician phone calls and mandatory laboratory reporting of elevated blood lead levels to the California Department of Health Services. In the 2 workers with the highest blood lead levels (both of whom had severe symptoms), treatment was indicated. Physicians inappropriately prescribed chelating agents to workers with ongoing lead exposure as prophylaxis against rising blood lead levels and to treat athero

Vaccination in healthcare workers: an Italian perspective.

The Italian National Vaccination Plan 2005-2007 strongly recommends that healthcare workers (HCWs) be offered hepatitis B and influenza vaccines and that susceptible workers should also be offered measles, mumps, rubella and varicella vaccines. Nationwide figures for vaccination coverage among HCWs are not currently available. Vaccination coverage is high but not yet satisfactory for hepatitis B and is absolutely insufficient for influenza. Susceptibility rates to childhood exanthematic diseases are low: when attempting to achieve complete immunity, screening the individuals at recruitment is

Audit of sickness absence and fitness-for-work referrals.

Since referrals in relation to sickness absence and fitness to continue work constitute an important part of occupational physicians' workloads, a study was carried out to audit this activity. Randomly selected referrals (u = 162) were audited by external peer review in relation to the information provided in the referral request, the consultation records and responses of the occupational physicians, and the response times linking the referral, the consultation and the response. The study showed that the referral record was adequate when specifying or quantifying long-term absences (90% and 84
