The current understanding of multistress interplay assumes stresses occur in perfect synchrony, but this assumption is rarely met in the natural marine ecosystem. To understand the interplay between nonperfectly overlapped stresses in the ocean, we manipulated a multigenerational experiment (F0-F3) to explore how different temporal scenarios of ocean acidification will affect mercury toxicity in a marine copepod Pseudodiaptomus annandalei. We found that the scenario of past acidification aggravated mercury toxicity but current and persistent acidification mitigated its toxicity. We specificall

This study has as main objective assessing the toxicity of crack-cocaine combined with different scenarios of ocean acidification on fertilization rate and embryo-larval development of Echinometra lucunter sea urchin. Effects on early life stages were assessed at five different concentrations (6,25 mg.L-1; 12,5 mg.L-1; 25 mg.L-1; 50 mg.L-1 and 100 mg.L-1) of crack-cocaine at four different pH values (8.5; 8.0; 7.5; 7.0). The pH values were achieved using two different methodologies: adding hydrochloric acid (HCl) and injecting carbon dioxide (CO2). The fertilization test did not show significa

Ocean acidification, recognized as a major threat to marine ecosystems, has developed into one of the fastest growing fields of research in marine sciences. Several studies on fish larval stages point to abnormal behaviours, malformations and increased mortality rates as a result of exposure to increased levels of CO2. However, other studies fail to recognize any consequence, suggesting species-specific sensitivity to increased levels of CO2, highlighting the need of further research. In this study we investigated the effects of exposure to elevated pCO2 on behaviour, development, oxidative st

Ocean acidification (OA), driven by increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂), is a major component of global ocean change with widespread implications for marine organisms. Sharks (elasmobranchs) are often assumed to be relatively resilient to OA due to their distinctive physiology, including strong acid-base regulation and urea-based osmoconformation. However, empirical evidence evaluating this assumption remains limited and fragmented. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the physiological, behavioural, and sensory responses of sharks to OA within a comparative framework that inco

Understanding how emerging contaminants interact with climate-driven stressors is essential for accurate ecological risk assessment in coastal ecosystems. This study evaluates the individual and combined effects of triclosan (TC), polyethylene microplastics (MP), ocean warming (OW), and ocean acidification (OA) on the early development of Paracentrotus lividus embryos. A tiered experimental design was implemented to: (i) characterize TC dose-response curves alone and in combination with increasing concentrations of MP (300-3000 particles mL-1), and (ii) assess how OW (24 °C) and OA (pH 7.6) mo

Ocean acidification (OA), characterized by changes in seawater chemistry and a concomitant decline of pH due to the uptake by seawater of the atmospheric CO2, will profoundly shape marine ecosystems. The lower pH/higher pCO2 can act negatively (as a stressor for organisms with a calcareous exoskeleton) or positively (as a direct resource for primary producers like macrophytes). Consequently, herbivores may indirectly benefit from OA counteracting the direct negative effects of living under high pCO2/low pH conditions. Here, we investigated how OA may influence site fidelity, habitat use, and t

Large changes in marine CO2 chemistry manifest in areas with weakly-buffered seawater where ocean acidification (OA) acts in concert with natural CO2 additions. These settings can exhibit periods of extreme OA in the form of multiple co-occurring stressors, including calcite undersaturation and low pH. Such conditions were observed in the northern Strait of Georgia, on the northeast Pacific coast, where extreme OA spanned a 3-year period. Here, we utilized an 8-year, highly-resolved record of seawater CO2 partial pressure and total dissolved inorganic carbon to decompose the drivers of this ex

Cephalopods play a central ecological role across all oceans and depths. However, under the current climate crisis, their physiology and behaviour are impacted, and we are beginning to comprehend the effects of environmental stressors at a molecular level. Here, we study the Hawaiian bobtail squid (Euprymna scolopes), known for its specific binary symbiosis with the bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri acquired post-hatching. We aim to understand the response (i.e. developmental and molecular) of E. scolopes after embryogenetic exposure to different conditions: (i) standard conditions (con

In mid rocky intertidal habitats the mussel Perumytilus purpurarus monopolizes the substratum to the detriment of many other species. However, the consumption of mussels by the shell-crushing crab Acanthocyclus hassleri creates within the mussel beds space and habitat for several other species. This crab uses its disproportionately large claw to crush its shelled prey and plays an important role in maintaining species biodiversity. This study evaluated the consequences of projected near-future ocean acidification (OA) and warming (OW) on traits of A. hassleri linked with their predatory perfor

Ocean acidification is predicted to affect a wide diversity of marine organisms. However, no studies have reported the effects of ocean acidification on Indian Ocean fish. We have used the Indian Ocean medaka (Oryzias melastigma) as a model species for a marine fish that lives in coastal waters. We investigated the impact of ocean acidification on the embryonic development and the stereotyped escape behavior (mediated by the Mauthner cell) in newly hatched larvae. Newly fertilized eggs of medaka were reared in seawater at three different partial pressures of carbon dioxide (pCO2): control at 4

Ocean acidification presents a significant threat to marine life, yet its neurobiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study examined how acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) mediate neuronal excitability and anxiety-like behaviour in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) under elevated CO2 concentrations (1000 and 1900 ppm). Transcriptomics revealed early upregulation of asic1a (4 days), while RT-qPCR demonstrated increased asic1a, asic1b, asic2 and asic4a (7 days), with only asic1a sustained at 30 days. Immunofluorescence confirmed heightened Asic2 in emotion-processing brain regions

Ocean acidification (OA) refers to the ongoing decline in ocean pH caused by the cascading effects of increased atmospheric CO2, which has significant negative impacts on various marine organisms, particularly crustaceans with calcified shells. However, research on the metabolic responses of crustaceans remains limited. In this study, we performed untargeted metabolomics on hemolymph samples from Cancer borealis (Jonah crab), a crustacean species well known for its tolerance to temperature and pH changes, to investigate its metabolic responses to OA. Two extraction methods-isopropanol (IPA) an

Enrichment of the oceans with CO2 may be beneficial for some marine phytoplankton, including harmful algae. Numerous laboratory experiments provided valuable insights into the effects of elevated pCO2 on the growth and physiology of harmful algal species, including the production of phycotoxins. Experiments close to natural conditions are the next step to improve predictions, as they consider the complex interplay between biotic and abiotic factors that can confound the direct effects of ocean acidification. We therefore investigated the effect of ocean acidification on the occurrence and abun

Discarded plastics are accumulating in the global ocean and posing threats to marine life. The plastisphere - the community colonizing plastic surfaces - profoundly influences the environmental behavior of plastic, affecting its degradation and entry into marine food webs. Ocean acidification (OA) due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions, is also threatening marine ecosystems, but the effect of OA on the structure and ecological functions of plastisphere communities remain poorly understood. Here, using a mesocosm experiment, we investigated the effects of OA on the plastisphere colonizing floating

Ocean acidification (OA) is a major threat to the sexual recruitment of reef-building corals. Acclimation mechanisms are critical but poorly understood in reef-building corals to OA during early life stages. Here, Acropora gemmifera, a common Indo-Pacific coral cultured in in situ seawater from Luhuitou reef at three levels of pCO2 (pH 8.14, 7.83, 7.54), showed significantly delayed larval metamorphosis and juvenile growth, but adapted to long-term high pCO2. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) emerged as a time- and dose-dependent mode of short-term response (3 days post settlement, d p.s.)

Ocean acidification (OA) is expected to indirectly impact biota living in contaminated coastal environments by altering the bioavailability and potentially toxicity of many pH-sensitive metals. Here, we show that OA (pH 7.71; pCO2 1480 μatm) significantly increases the toxicity responses to a global coastal contaminant (copper ~0.1 μM) in two keystone benthic species; mussels (Mytilus edulis) and purple sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus). Mussels showed an extracellular acidosis in response to OA and copper individually which was enhanced during combined exposure. In contrast, urchins maintai

The decline in ocean pH due to rising CO2 levels is a critical factor impacting marine ecosystems. Ocean acidification (OA) is expected to negatively affect various organisms, particularly those with mineralized structures. While the effects of OA on the calcification of shells and exoskeletons are documented, the impact on homeostatic processes, such as osmoregulation, is less understood. Osmoregulation is vital for maintaining water and salt balance within marine organisms, crucial for their survival and physiological functions. Acidification may alter ion exchange mechanisms, affecting the

This review has been undertaken to understand the effectiveness of ocean acidification on oceanic micronutrient metal cycles (iron, copper and zinc) and its potential impacts on marine biota. Ocean acidification will slow down the oxidation of Fe(II) thereby retarding Fe(III) formation and subsequent hydrolysis/precipitation leading to an increase in iron bioavailability. Further, the increased primary production sustains enzymatic bacteria assisted Fe(III) reduction and subsequently the binding of weaker ligands favours the dissociation of free Fe(II) ions, thus increasing the bioavailability

The bioaccumulation of mercury (Hg) in marine organisms through various pathways has not yet been fully explored, particularly in cephalopods. This study utilises radiotracer techniques using the isotope 203Hg to investigate the toxicokinetics and the organotropism of waterborne inorganic Hg (iHg) and dietary inorganic and organic Hg (methylHg, MeHg) in juvenile common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis. The effect of two contrasting CO2 partial pressures in seawater (400 and 1600 μatm, equivalent to pH 8.08 and 7.54, respectively) and two types of prey (fish and shrimp) were tested as potential dri
