Characteristics and trend of the wildfire activity in the Southern Hemisphere (2003-2022).

Global wildfire activity has a major impact on regional climates because of the large amount of particulate matter injected into the atmosphere during and after the biomass burning. If its evolution has been extensively studied in specific regions of the globe, very few studies have been presented for the Southern Hemisphere, at a continental scale. This study aims to evaluate wildfire activity across three continents: Southern Africa (SAF), South America (SAM), and Oceania (OCE), and quantify its trend over the last two decades (2004-2024), using Active Fire MODIS satellite data. The first ke

Genomic analysis of ocular Staphylococcus aureus reveals emerging lineages, sequence type- and region-associated virulence gene profiles, and distinctions from non-ocular strains.

PURPOSE: Ocular infections remain a major cause of visual morbidity worldwide. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common causative pathogens, in which bacterial virulence contributes to tissue damage and chronic or recurrent infection. This study aims to define the population structure, regional variation and potential virulence strategies of ocular S. aureus globally. METHODS: Whole-genome sequencing data from 220 S. aureus isolates obtained from patients with ocular infections were analysed to assess lineage-, region-, niche-traits, and virulence gene repertoires. An additional 295 no

A global survey on practice changes and barriers to the use of direct oral anticoagulants in children.

We aim to describe the patterns of use, practice changes, and emerging challenges after the approval of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for thrombosis management and prevention in children. This cross-sectional survey-based study involved pediatric thrombosis treaters from different institutions around the world. The survey was distributed between January and August 2024. DOAC use and barriers were compared according to the country's income (high-income countries [HICs] vs low- and middle-income countries [LMICs], per World Bank classification). In total, 100 of 103 respondents completed th

Whole genome sequencing-based prediction of antibiotic-resistance of ocular Staphylococcus aureus across six continents.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of ocular infections, resulting in vision loss in severe cases. Understanding the antibiotic resistance profiles of ocular S. aureus can help customize treatments. However, there is a lack of global data on the resistance patterns of ocular isolates and comparative regional analyses. Hence, WGS data from 195 ocular S. aureus isolates across six continents were analysed to identify antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and predict antibiotic resistance phenotypes in this study. A total of 40 ARGs were detected, involving resistance mechanisms against aminog

A systematic survey of environmental DNA in Palau's lakes and waterfalls reveals an increase in Leptospira levels after flooding.

OBJECTIVE: Leptospirosis is an important bacterial zoonosis which is widespread in tropical and subtropical islands and influences human and animal health which has secondary economic effects. Although leptospirosis is endemic in Palau, an Oceanian Pacific Island country, few systematic surveys of potential risk factors for Leptospira infection, such as weather and host animals, have been conducted in the natural environment. We used environmental DNA metabarcoding to assess the distribution, species diversity, and abundance of pathogenic Leptospira in this endemic region to investigate the po

Direct Single-Dose Drug-Provocation Test Is Safe for Delabelling Penicillin Low-Risk Reactions in Adults.

BACKGROUND: Penicillins (PENs) are the most frequent drug-allergic reactions trigger. However, diagnostic work-up is complex and time-consuming: it requires skin testing (ST) and drug-provocation test (DPT), needing faster delabelling strategies. Although direct DPT without previous STs has shown to be safe, most of the studies are performed in children or in North American, Asian, or Oceanian adults, with few studies in the European adult population. We explored its safety in European adult patients with low-risk PEN allergy history and, additionally, analysed ST role and T-cell involvement b

Physical activity and constipation: A systematic review of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Constipation significantly impacts quality of life and is a common public health issue. For affected individuals, especially those who are inactive and experience constipation symptoms, it is recommended to engage in physical activity (PA) to improve their condition. However, the relationship between PA and improvement in constipation remains unclear. We performed this systematic review of cohort studies to evaluate this potential association. METHODS: We systematically searched the Embase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and CINAHL databases for all cohort studies examining the relatio

Can an HLB-resistant interstock block the long-distance movement of 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' within citrus trees?

Among citrus diseases, Huanglongbing (HLB) is recognized as the most destructive and economically damaging worldwide. It is mainly associated with 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas) being transmitted by Diaphorina citri. There are no curative treatments or commercial citrus varieties resistant to CLas. Wild Aurantioideae species have been widely screened and, recently, Oceanian genotypes graft- and sexually compatible with Citrus were identified as HLB-resistant; however, there is no information regarding their use as interstocks of commercial varieties yet. Under greenhouse conditions

Genomic epidemiology of Streptococcus pyogenes from pharyngeal and skin swabs in Gabon.

UNLABELLED: The disease burden of Streptococcus pyogenes is particularly high in low- and middle-income countries. However, data on the molecular epidemiology of S. pyogenes in such regions, especially sub-Saharan Africa, are scarce. To address this, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of S. pyogenes from Gabon was performed to identify transmission clusters and provide valuable genomic data for public repositories. A total of 76 S. pyogenes isolates from 73 patients, collected between September 2012 and January 2013, were characterized by short-read whole-genome sequencing. The predominant emm type

Characterization of High-Grade Glial and Related Neuroepithelial Tumors Using the AOSNP-ADAPTR Framework: A Case Series With Review of Literature.

High-grade glial tumors are among the most aggressive primary neoplasms of the central nervous system and are associated with substantial morbidity, rapid progression, and poor survival. The classification of high-grade glial tumors requires a diagnostic approach combining histomorphology with immunohistochemical and molecular findings. In resource-constrained settings, the AOSNP-ADAPTR (Asian Oceanian Society of Neuropathology - Adapting Diagnostic Approaches for Practical Taxonomy in Resource-Restrained Regions) framework provides a practical strategy for implementing these principles using
