Ochrobactrum anthropi infection following corneal transplantation -a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Ochrobactrum anthropi is widely distributed and primarily infects patients with compromised immune functions . Historically, O. anthropi has been considered to possess low toxicity and pathogenicity; however, recent studies suggest that it may in fact cause severe purulent infections. In this case study, we examine a case of O. anthropi infection following corneal transplantation, exploring the occurrence and outcomes of such post-operative infections. CASE PRESENTATION: A retrospective analysis of cases involved examinations, genetic testing for diagnosis, and subsequent treatmen

Outbreak of Achromobacter xylosoxidans and Ochrobactrum anthropi Infections after Prostate Biopsies, France, 2014.

We report an outbreak of healthcare-associated prostatitis involving rare environmental pathogens in immunocompetent patients undergoing transrectal prostate biopsies at Hôpital Édouard Herriot (Lyon, France) during August 13-October 10, 2014. Despite a fluoroquinolone-based prophylaxis, 5 patients were infected with Achromobacter xylosoxidans and 3 with Ochrobactrum anthropi, which has not been reported as pathogenic in nonimmunocompromised persons. All patients recovered fully. Analysis of the outbreak included case investigation, case-control study, biopsy procedure review, microbiologic te

Novel denitrifying bacterium Ochrobactrum anthropi YD50.2 tolerates high levels of reactive nitrogen oxides.

Most studies of bacterial denitrification have used nitrate (NO3-) as the first electron acceptor, whereas relatively less is understood about nitrite (NO2-) denitrification. We isolated novel bacteria that proliferated in the presence of high levels of NO2- (72 mM). Strain YD50.2, among several isolates, was taxonomically positioned within the alpha subclass of Proteobacteria and identified as Ochrobactrum anthropi YD50.2. This strain denitrified NO2-, as well as NO3-. The gene clusters for denitrification (nar, nir, nor, and nos) were cloned from O. anthropi YD50.2, in which the nir and nor

Ochrobactrum anthropi: A Rare Cause of Culture-Proven Acute Post-Operative Cluster Endophthalmitis.

AIM: To report the clinical presentation and management outcomes of an outbreak of culture-proven post-operative endophthalmitis (POE) secondary to Ochrobactrum anthropi. METHODS: This study was conducted at a tertiary-care eye hospital in South India. RESULTS: Fifty-five patients underwent cataract surgery by six surgeons on three consecutive days in the same surgical facility in September 2020. Four patients developed POE after a mean interval of 12.0 ± 4.8 days and underwent immediate vitreous tap and intravitreal antibiotic injections (Vancomycin and Ceftazidime). All patients required a

Genomics of Ochrobactrum pseudogrignonense (newly named Brucella pseudogrignonensis) reveals a new blaOXA subgroup.

Ochrobactrum pseudogrignonense (newly named Brucella pseudogrignonensis) is an emerging pathogen in immunodeficient and immunocompetent patients. Most documented cases associated with Ochrobactrum are frequently catheter-related and exhibit wide-spectrum β-lactam resistance. Misidentification of this pathogen using commercial bacterial identification kits is common. We identified a case of O. pseudogrignonense infection associated with cholelithiasis. The O. pseudogrignonense genome was sequenced and reconstructed using a Nanopore and Illumina hybrid strategy. A novel blaOXA-919 divergent from

Heavy metal biosorption by biomass of Ochrobactrum anthropi producing exopolysaccharide in activated sludge.

The removal of chromium, cadmium and copper, toxic metals of high environmental priority due to their toxicity, from dilute aqueous solutions has been studied in the present work, applying a dead exopolysaccharide producing bacterium, Ochrobactrum anthropi, isolated from activated sludge. Particularly, the effect of pH, metal concentration and the effects of contact time were considered. Optimum adsorption pH values of chromium(VI), cadmium(II) and copper(II) were 2.0, 8.0 and 3.0 respectively. Experimental results also showed the influence of initial metal concentration on the metal uptake fo

Brucellosis Initially Misidentified as Ochrobactrum anthropi Bacteremia: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Automated identification systems may misidentify Brucella, the causative agent of brucellosis, which may be re-emerging in the United States as the result of an expanding feral swine population. We present a case of Brucella suis likely associated with feral swine exposure that was misidentified as Ochrobactrum anthropi, a phylogenetic relative.

Infective endocarditis and septic embolization with Ochrobactrum anthropi: case report and review of literature.

Ochrobactrum anthropi, previously known as CDC group Vd, is an aerobic, Gram-negative bacillus of low virulence that occasionally causes human infection. We describe a case of infective endocarditis with O. anthropi complicated by septic embolization. A review of all the literature reported cases of O. anthropi infection is presented and categorized into 'Central line related', 'Transplant related' and "Other pyogenic infections". Mortality appears to be related to the underlying disease state, rather than the organism.

Enzyme-catalyzed biodegradation of penicillin fermentation residues by β-lactamase OtLac from Ochrobactrum tritici.

BACKGROUND: Biodegradation of antibiotics is a promising method for the large-scale removal of antibiotic residues in the environment. However, the enzyme that is involved in the biodegradation process is the key information to be revealed. RESULTS: In this study, the beta-lactamase from Ochrobactrum tritici that mediates the biodegradation of penicillin V was identified and characterized. When searching the proteins of Ochrobactrum tritici, the β-lactamase (OtLac) was identified. OtLac consists of 347 amino acids, and predicted isoelectric point is 7.0. It is a class C β-lactamase according

Immunological features of LPS from Ochrobactrum intermedium on sheep experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica.

The effects of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Ochrobactrum intermedium in sheep with fasciolosis was reported previously, resulting in lower fecal egg counts and fluke burden. In the current study, we analyzed its immunological effects in two groups of sheep, treated (T) and controls (C). Fasciolosis induces a T helper (Th) type-2 response, characterized by IL-4 and IL-10 production; however, at the beginning of the infection, the IFN-γ production predominates (Th type-1 response). Although we did not find differences in IL-4 production or in the expression level of this gene in the hepatic

Late-onset Ochrobactrum anthropi sepsis in a preterm neonate with congenital urinary tract abnormalities.

Recent trends in late-onset neonatal sepsis have revealed an increase in Gram-negative organisms as causative agents. Ochrobactrum anthropi is an emerging human pathogen that has been reported primarily in immunocompromised hosts, especially those with indwelling catheters or other medical devices. We report the occurrence of late-onset urosepsis secondary to O. anthropi in a preterm neonate with posterior urethral valves and review the salient features of the pathogen and its management.

Effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Ochrobactrum intermedium on sheep experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica.

The effects of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Ochrobactrum intermedium was evaluated in sheep experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica. Animals were divided into four groups: two treated with the LPS (T1/T2) and two controls (C1/C2). T1/C1 were slaughtered at 30 days postinfection (dpi) and T2/C2 at 85 dpi. Body weight and body condition were found higher in T1 and T2 than in controls, although differences were not significant. Treated sheep showed lower cumulative fecal egg count than controls (p < 0.01). Levels of red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit

Two Case Reports of Ochrobactrum anthropi Bacteremia in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Northeast India.

Ochrobactrum anthropi is a non-fermenting, Gram-negative bacillus and an emerging opportunistic pathogen. We have isolated this organism from the blood cultures of two patients, a 53-year-old immunocompetent male presenting with an episode of mild fever post craniotomy and an 85-year-old male with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and urinary retention on an indwelling catheter. The organism was identified using VITEK 2 (bioMérieux, France). Both the isolates were resistant to most of the β-lactams, including cephalosporins, and sensitive to quinolones, aminoglycosides, and carbapen

Distribution of glyphosate and methylphosphonate catabolism systems in soil bacteria Ochrobactrum anthropi and Achromobacter sp.

Bacterial strains capable of utilizing methylphosphonic acid (MP) or glyphosate (GP) as the sole sources of phosphorus were isolated from soils contaminated with these organophosphonates. The strains isolated from MP-contaminated soils grew on MP and failed to grow on GP. One group of the isolates from GP-contaminated soils grew only on MP, while the other one grew on MP and GP. Strains Achromobacter sp. MPS 12 (VKM B-2694), MP degraders group, and Ochrobactrum anthropi GPK 3 (VKM B-2554D), GP degraders group, demonstrated the best degradative capabilities towards MP and GP, respectively, and

Molecular characterization of chromosomal class C beta-lactamase and its regulatory gene in Ochrobactrum anthropi.

Ochrobactrum anthropi, formerly known as CDC group Vd, is an oxidase-producing, gram-negative, obligately aerobic, non-lactose-fermenting bacillus of low virulence that occasionally causes human infections. It is highly resistant to all beta-lactams except imipenem. A clinical isolate, SLO74, and six reference strains were tested. MICs of penicillins, aztreonam, and most cephalosporins tested, including cefotaxime and ceftazidime, were >128 microg/ml and of cefepime were 64 to >128 microg/ml. Clavulanic acid was ineffective and tazobactam had a weak effect in association with piperacillin. Two

Draft genome of Ochrobactrum intermedium strain M86 isolated from non-ulcer dyspeptic individual from India.

BACKGROUND: Ochrobactrum intermedium is an emerging opportunistic pathogen of humans that is closely related to members of the genus Brucella. Earlier, we reported the case of an Indian subject with non-ulcer dyspeptic symptoms whose urease positive gastric biopsy revealed the presence of Helicobacter pylori along with non-Helicobacter like bacteria, eventually cultured and identified as O. intermedium strain M86. RESULTS: Here, we describe the unclosed draft genome of the strain M86 with a length of 5,188,688 bp and mean G+C content of 57.9%. We have also identified many putative gene cluste

Crown Gall Induced by a Natural Isolate of Brucella (Ochrobactrum) pseudogrignonense Containing a Tumor-Inducing Plasmid.

Crown gall disease in plants is caused by "Agrobacteria", bacteria belonging to the Rhizobiaceae family, which carry a tumor-inducing (Ti) plasmid. Unexpectedly, we found evidence that a natural isolate from a rose crown gall, called NBC51/LBA8980, was a bacterium that did not belong to the Rhizobiaceae family. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that this bacterium contained three large DNA circles with rRNA and tRNA genes, representing one chromosome and two chromids, respectively, and two megaplasmids, including a Ti plasmid.
