The degu, Octodon degus, is a South American hystricomorph rodent that is of interest because it develops spontaneous diabetes mellitus and has been found to have islet amyloidosis. To help clarify these problems we have cloned cDNAs encoding islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), insulin, and glucagon precursors from this species. The predicted amino acid sequence of degu IAPP is very similar to that of nonamyloid-forming guinea pig IAPP. In contrast, degu insulin and the C-terminal region of degu glucagon are highly divergent from those of other mammals, as is also the case in the guinea pig, sug

Ectoparasite infestations are not common in degus. Two cases are presented here where use of Stronghold® Plus/Revolution® Plus (selamectin and sarolaner topical solution) was successfully administered to a degu (Octodon degus) for treatment of naturally-occurring mite infesations. Selamectin (Stronghold®/Revolution®) has been demonstrated to be effective against naturally-occurring mite infections in dogs and selamectin is approved for use in dogs for the treatment of sarcoptic mange (caused by Sarcoptes scabiei) at a dose of 6 mg/kg. In the first case, a 2.6-years-old female degu housed in a

INTRODUCTION: Meiotic recombination is one of the major sources of genetic diversity. Understanding the cytogenetic basis for recombination rate alterations is essential to explain the patterns of variation observed between different groups of species. Common degu (Octodon degus) is a South American rodent of the speciose and highly chromosomal variable Ctenohystrica clade, on which relatively few cytogenetic studies have been carried out. It has a mostly bi-armed karyotype, making it an interesting model for cytogenetic research.
METHODS: Using immunolocalization of key meiotic proteins and

Lab rodent species commonly used to study the visual system and its development (hamsters, rats, and mice) are crepuscular/nocturnal, altricial, and possess simpler visual systems than carnivores and primates. To widen the spectra of studied species, here we introduce an alternative model, the Chilean degu (Octodon degus). This diurnal, precocial Caviomorph rodent has a cone-enriched, well-structured retina, and well-developed central visual projections. To assess degus' visual physiological properties, we characterized the visual responses and receptive field (RF) properties of isolated neuro

Hystricomorphs, such as guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), degus (Octodon degus) and chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera), have become increasingly popular pet animals in Japan. However, comprehensive data on diseases in these animals remain limited, primarily restricted to single case reports, except for guinea pigs. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases in pet guinea pigs, degus and chinchillas in Japan and to describe their epidemiological characteristics. We reviewed biopsy samples from guinea pigs (n = 134), degus (n = 57) and chinchillas

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-month-old male degu was treated for preputial damage and lateral penile displacement that occurred during attempted castration.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Bruising and swelling of the prepuce and severe edema to the left of the prepuce were evident. The penis could not be extruded from the prepuce. Radiography revealed a large bladder. Contrast medium injected into the prepuce filled the peripreputial subcutaneous tissues.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: During surgical exploration through a peripreputial approach, the penis was found to be completely separated from the prepuce and loca

Wildlife populations worldwide are increasingly exposed to climatic extremes, yet demographic mechanisms linking environmental variability to local extinction remain poorly understood. We evaluated the population dynamics of a degu (Octodon degus) population in central Chile over a 12-year period (2009-2020) encompassing a decade-long megadrought. Using capture-mark-recapture models, we estimated apparent survival, recruitment, and population growth rates and assessed their relationships with climatic and ecosystem variables. Population growth remained positive throughout most of the study per

Dental disease is among the most common causes for chinchillas and degus to present to veterinarians. Most animals with dental disease present with weight loss, reduced food intake/anorexia, and drooling. Degus commonly present with dyspnea. Dental disease has been primarily referred to as elongation and malocclusion of the cheek teeth. Periodontal disease, caries, and tooth resorption are common diseases in chinchillas, but are missed frequently during routine intraoral examination, even performed under general anesthesia. A diagnostic evaluation, including endoscopy-guided intraoral examinat

BACKGROUND: Several factors are known to trigger acute manifestations of lupus erythematosus (drugs, ultraviolet radiation, bacterial or viral infections, pregnancy), but fungal infections have never been reported to induce lupus-like lesions. We describe 2 children with tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes(TM), who developed transient skin and serological manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus.
PATIENTS: Case 1, a 3-year-old girl, had a kerion due to TM transmitted by an octodon, and a facial skin eruption suggestive of systemic lupus erythematosus. Antinuclear antibod

Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases are frequently diagnosed in rodents. Clinical signs are usually nonspecific and include anorexia, weight loss, chronic wasting, abdominal discomfort, gas accumulation in the intestine and stomach, and diarrhea. Malabsorption associated with GI dysfunction or gastroenteritis quickly leads to negative energy balance and metabolic acidosis. Therefore, all disorders of the GI tract should be treated as soon as possible. The article describes selected disorders of the GI tract in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera), degus (Octodon degus),

A 5-y-old, male degu (Octodon degus) was presented with a subcutaneous mass in the ventral aspect of the cervical area. The mass was removed surgically. Histologically, the mass was a densely cellular, expansile neoplasm, with compression of thymic tissue to the periphery. The neoplasm consisted of solid sheets of polygonal cells, mixed with fewer small lymphocytes. Rare Hassall bodies were scattered throughout the mass. Polygonal cells were positive for anti-keratin/cytokeratin AE1/AE3 antibody, and small lymphocytes were positive for anti-CD3 antibody. The histopathologic and immunohistochem

In this study, we investigated the influence of environmental temperature and immune challenge on organ and body mass in juvenile degus (Octodon degus). Using an experimental design with two temperature treatments (15 °C and 30 °C) and a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced immune challenge, we measured the mass of key organs (kidney, heart, liver, spleen, lung) as well as body mass. Our results showed that temperature alone significantly affected kidney, heart, lung, and body mass, with individuals reared at 30 °C exhibiting larger organs and greater body mass, consistent with thermoneutral condi

This presentation will survey the retinal architecture, advantages, and limitations of several lesser-known rodent species that provide a useful diurnal complement to rats and mice. These diurnal rodents also possess unusually cone-rich photoreceptor mosaics that facilitate the study of cone cells and pathways. Species to be presented include principally the Sudanian Unstriped Grass Rat and Nile Rat (Arvicanthis spp.), the Fat Sand Rat (Psammomys obesus), the degu (Octodon degus) and the 13-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus). The retina and optic nerve in several of these speci

Blood sampling is a critical component of wildlife research, particularly in studies of wildlife diseases. However, limited information exists on venipuncture sites for Chilean wild rodent species, such as the olive-colored akodont (Abrothrix olivaceus), Darwin's pericote (Phyllotis darwini), and degu (Octodon degus). Here, we describe field-tested venipuncture sites that allowed the collection of measurable blood volumes suitable for molecular detection of Trypanosoma cruzi in these species, based on fieldwork conducted in Chile's semiarid Mediterranean ecosystem. We provide anatomical illust

Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, a zoonosis involving domestic and sylvatic mammalian reservoirs. Since scarce information has been published about the susceptibility of T. cruzi lineages to other triatomine species besides Triatoma infestans, we evaluate the susceptibility of T. infestans and Mepraia spinolai to different T. cruzi lineages, originated from naturally infected Octodon degus rodents as mammal host. Xenodiagnosis-PCR methods to detect T. cruzi positive rodents and genotyping to differentiate T. cruzi lineages (TcI, TcIIb, TcIId and TcIIe) identified sin

Degus (Octodon degus) are prone to develop dental disease with deleterious health effects. The two studies reported here aimed to determine the prevalence of dental disorders in degus and to identify and evaluate diagnostic tools for determination of prognosis of these disorders. In study A, health data from 225 degus at AAP, Rescue Center for Exotic Animals in the Netherlands, were collated and the prevalence of dental disorders and differences in sex and age at clinical onset of symptoms associated with dental disorders were described. The prevalence was 34.7 per cent and higher (P<0.01) in

Binocular vision requires both eyes to be aligned such that their visual fields overlap. A long-standing premise derived from comparative studies is that the orientation of the orbits determines eye position, and thereby the extension of this overlap, the binocular field. In addition, to produce an accurate neural representation, the binocular field must integrate with the position of retinal high-acuity areas and with the extent of uncrossed retinal projections. It remains unknown, however, whether the binocular field is already formed at the time of eye-opening, as well as when and how it in

INTRODUCTION: Degus are commonly used as laboratory animals; however, over the past few years, they have become increasingly popular as pets.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article was to present disease prevalence in 300 pet degus divided in two age groups (under and above two years).
METHODS: Medical records of degus (Octodon degus), which were presented to the author's clinic in the period from January 2007 to December 2009, were reviewed.
RESULTS: The most common diseases in degus were (1) acquired dental disease (60·0%) with significantly higher prevalence in older animals (P<0.001), (2)

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common and devastating neurodegenerative condition worldwide, characterized by the aggregation of amyloid-β and phosphorylated tau protein, and is accompanied by a progressive loss of learning and memory. A healthy nervous system is endowed with synaptic plasticity, among others neural plasticity mechanisms, allowing structural and physiological adaptations to changes in the environment. This neural plasticity modification sustains learning and memory, and behavioral changes and is severely affected by pathological and aging conditions, leading to cognitive

Parental care is essential for social, behavioural, and neural development of offspring. Disruption of parental care, for example through parental separation, can negatively affect offspring development in rodents. While previous work has focused on maternal and paternal deprivation, the effects of cross-fostering, another form of parental-offspring instability, on brain development remain poorly understood. Such disruptions are thought to induce stress, which in turn can suppress neurogenesis and increases inflammation and apoptosis in the hippocampus, with effects that often differ between s
