Odontogenic cysts, odontogenic tumors, fibroosseous, and giant cell lesions of the jaws.

Odontogenic cysts that can be problematic because of recurrence and/or aggressive growth include odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), calcifying odontogenic cyst, and the recently described glandular odontogenic cyst. The OKC has significant growth capacity and recurrence potential and is occasionally indicative of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. There is also an orthokeratinized variant, the orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst, which is less aggressive and is not syndrome associated. Ghost cell keratinization, which typifies the calcifying odontogenic cyst, can be seen in solid lesions that

Multiple orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts - A case report.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOC) are uncommon developmental odontogenic cysts of jaw. It was previously considered as an orthokeratinized variant of Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). OOC differs from OKC of its clinical and histological behavior. A 34-year-old male came for replacement of missing teeth in the right side of lower jaw. History revealed extraction of 46, 47, 48, and enucleation of cyst 15 years before for a radiolucent lesion of right posterior region, which was histologically diagnosed as orthokeratinized variant of OKC. On a radiographic evaluation, unilocular radiolucency

Morphometric evaluation of AgNORs in odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the morphometry of AgNORs in odontogenic cysts and to compare their biologic behavior to determine whether AgNOR morphometry is helpful in predicting the behavior. STUDY DESIGN: Ten cases each of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC) and radicular cyst (RC) were stained with silver nitrate. Morphometric analysis of 100 selected epithelial and connective tissue cells was done to record their nuclear volume, nuclear perimeter, contour index of the nucleus, AgNOR count, AgNOR proportion and single AgNOR volume. The results were statistically analyzed using AN

Computed tomographic features of calcifying odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the CT appearances of 4 cases of the calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) with particular reference to the effect of varying the window settings. METHODS: Conventional radiographs and CT scans of 4 calcifying odontogenic cysts were analyzed with respect to the presence of an impacted tooth, root resorption and calcification. In addition, increased attenuation by desquamated keratin was examined by varying the window settings on CT. RESULTS: All lesions were located in the maxilla and on conventional radiographs, had unilocular radiolucency with a well-defined margin. Cal

Histochemical studies on glycosaminoglycans of odontogenic cysts.

Histochemical examination of odontogenic cyst connective tissue has demonstrated that hyaluronic acid is the predominant glycosaminoglycan present with lesser amounts of the sulphated glycosaminoglycans. Mast cells were frequently observed in the connective tissue, particularly just beneath the epithelium and may be responsible for the enhanced staining for heparin observed in this area. Local tissue metabolism and inflammation will contribute to the release of glycosaminoglycans from connective tissue into the lumenal fluid. Staining of glycosaminoglycans was generally minimal in the epitheli

Human cytomegalovirus is present in odontogenic cysts.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies suggest that some viruses, including human cytomegalovirus (CMV), may be involved in the pathogenesis of periapical lesions. Since periapical cysts (PCs) represent the next stage in the evolution of periapical granuloma, it seemed reasonable to investigate the presence of CMV in PCs and any possible relationship between its presence and the clinical features of those cysts, as well as to compare the results obtained with corresponding findings in non-inflammatory lesions, like odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). METHODS: Samples of 33 PCs and 10 OKCs, obtained at the

Analysis of odontogenic cysts of the jaws.

In this study 850 cases of odontogenic cysts of the jaws, treated in Kaunas University of Medicine Hospital during the period of 1986-2004, were analyzed in order to evaluate the incidence of these cysts and other aspects of clinical and therapeutic interest such as their clinical features, changes they caused in the facial and mandible structures, and the teeth that had caused the pathology. Case histories of 455 men and 395 women had been analyzed. The age of the patients varied from 4 to 87 years, with the average of 35.8. More than half of the diagnosed cysts (63%) were present in the maxi

Multiple non-odontogenic cysts--a case report.

Nonodontogenic cysts have been identified at various locations in oral cavity. These occur primarily in relation to fusion of maxillary process either with its counterpart or different portions of nasal part of frontonasal process. Usually solitary, these primarily affect maxilla alone; can rarely be seen in ramus of mandible. We present a case of multiple non-odontogenic cysts involving both maxilla and mandible.

Mast cell-derived tryptase in odontogenic cysts.

Inflammatory and developmental cysts of the jaws are relatively common bone destructive lesions in the human maxillofacial skeleton but their pathogenesis is still poorly understood. In this study the role of mast cells (MC), and mast cell tryptase in particular, was evaluated in the pathophysiology of bone resorption and jaw cyst formation in different types of cysts. The distribution of MC and the amount of tryptase in histological tissue sections were determined by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antihuman tryptase antibodies and the results were quantitated by using an image analyzin

Glycosaminoglycans in fluid aspirates from odontogenic cysts.

Glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans were analysed in keratinizing and nonkeratinizing odontogenic cyst fluids. Hyaluronic acid showed the highest incidence and abundance amongst the glycosaminoglycans detected. Appreciable amounts of chondroitin-4-sulphate were also observed, particularly in the dental cysts, with lesser amounts of the other glycosaminoglycans. Heparan sulphate showed a higher incidence and abundance in the keratocyst than the other cysts, whilst chondroitin-6-sulphate could not be detected in any of the cysts. A considerable proportion of the glycosaminoglycans of the fluids

Orthokeratinised odontogenic cyst mimicking periapical cyst.

Orthokeratinised odontogenic cyst (OOC) denotes the odontogenic cyst that microscopically has an orthokeratinised epithelial lining. OOC is characterised by a less-aggressive behaviour and a low rate of recurrence. This report describes a case of OOC involving posterior part of the mandible that mimicked periapical cyst in a 14-year-old boy. The initial clinical diagnosis was given as periapical cyst based on the clinical and radiographical features. Enucleation of the cyst was performed and the specimen was sent for histopathological examination. A definite diagnosis of OOC was made by histop

Calcifying odontogenic cyst of the maxilla.

Large cystic lesions of the maxillary sinus may initially manifest with malocclusion, cosmetic deformity, or both. Their origin may be odontogenic or nonodontogenic. Proper diagnosis of these cysts immeasurably aids in adequate (nonmutilating) treatment. A recent case of a calcifying and keratinizing odontogenic cyst that initially manifested as a facial mass exemplifies the need for adequate clinical and histological diagnosis to ensure appropriate treatment. Fewer than 35 cases have been reported since the original description in 1962.

Immunohistochemical study of the orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst: a comparison with the odontogenic keratocyst.

OBJECTIVE: Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a developmental cyst that occurs in the maxilla and the mandible and is defined by the World Health Organization as the uncommon orthokeratinized type of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). However, studies have shown that OOC has peculiar clinicopathologic aspects and biologic behavior when compared with other developmental odontogenic cysts, especially OKCs. Therefore, in this study, the immunohistochemical profile of the OOC was delineated and compared with that of the OKC. STUDY DESIGN: Twelve cases of OOC were submitted to a panel of antibo

Global prevalence of odontogenic cysts: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts constitute a common group of lesions affecting the jaws and represent a relevant clinical and epidemiological burden in oral and maxillofacial practice. Their occurrence varies across populations, and understanding global prevalence patterns is essential for improving diagnosis, treatment planning, and public health strategies. However, an updated synthesis of prevalence data across different regions remains limited. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following a predefined methodology, with a comprehensive search of PubMed, EBSCOhost, and Web of Science
