UNLABELLED: Off-road vehicles used in construction and agricultural activities can contribute substantially to emissions of gaseous pollutants and can be a major source of submicrometer carbonaceous particles in many parts of the world. However, there have been relatively few efforts in quantifying the emission factors (EFs) and for estimating the potential emission reduction benefits using emission control technologies for these vehicles. This study characterized the black carbon (BC) component of particulate matter and NOx, CO, and CO2 EFs of selected diesel-powered off-road mobile sources i

As part of the National Park Service's Temporary Winter Use Plans Environmental Assessment, the University of Denver has been collecting in-use tailpipe emissions data from snowcoaches and snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park. During the winter of 2006, using a portable emissions monitoring system, tailpipe data were collected from 10 snowcoaches and 2 four-stroke snowmobiles. These vehicles were operated over a standard route within the park, and the snowcoaches all carried identical passenger loads. These snowcoaches were newer in age with more advanced fuel management technology than th

In this article, authors provide a historical context for the increasing dangers of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and side-by-side and utility task vehicles (UTV) used by children and teens. In addition, the article describes the design features that make these vehicles prone to crashes and particularly dangerous to children. Study data related to the characteristics of riders, crash and injury mechanisms, risk factors, and resulting injuries are also summarized. Finally, effective injury prevention strategies using approaches from engineering, education and laws/enforcement are outlined, with a p

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are an ongoing source of orthopaedic trauma in the United States. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried for ATV-related extremity trauma from 2010 to 2019. An estimated 31,979 ATV-related injuries present to emergency departments annually without significant variability between years. Patients were predominantly white (63.5%), male (72.2%), and aged 18 - 44 (49.9%). Injury sites frequently included the shoulder (24%), wrist (12.8%), and ankle (11.2%). Fractures were most common followed by strains and sprains. Only 15.5% of

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have become popular with respect to recreational activities. Multiple orthopaedic and pediatric organizations currently recommend limiting use of ATVs to older age groups of children with supervision. These recommendations have not generally been adhered to, resulting in a disproportionate number of pediatric orthopaedic trauma, specifically of the upper extremities. A retrospective review of patients 18-years-old and younger who presented to a single, Level I Trauma Center with ATV-related upper extremity trauma between 1996 and 2006 was undertaken to determine the

HIGHLIGHTS: Parents did not see themselves as role models for children regarding use of quad bikes. Parents seemed to misjudge their children's maturity and capabilities. Risk acceptance was a common issue, due to risk normalization. There is a need for an age limit for drivers of adult-size quad bikes.
ABSTRACT: When seeking to explain the many accidents involving children on quad bikes, it is critical to understand the norms and risk perceptions of their parents, because parents are responsible for their children's safety. This study explored attitudes and behavior among parents of rural ch

Children lack the cognitive judgment and motor skills to safely operate all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in all situations. The Trauma Team clinicians at Nemours Children's Health System/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (N/AIDHC) were concerned about the severity of injuries sustained by children when they were either the driver or a passenger on an ATV. Although this subset of children within the trauma registry did not account for a high volume of trauma patients, these children sustained a higher proportion of severe injuries. In 2012, the Trauma Team at N/AIDHC partnered with Nemours Heal

Motocross is an increasingly popular but high-risk sport. This article reviews the history of motocross, the relevant medical literature, the unique medical issues, safety equipment, and the expert recommended approach to providing support for such events. Assessment of an injured rider on or near a track requires a provider to first ensure scene safety, then assess for airway, cervical spine, and head injuries before proceeding. Although extremity injuries are the most common injury, motocross riders frequently sustain significant spine and head trauma as well. Caregivers need to have a compl

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is a motorized vehicle designed for off-road use with low-pressure tires, a seat that is straddled by the operator, and handlebars for steering. Currently, only four-wheeled models are produced in the United States; production of three-wheeled ATVs ended in 1987 because of safety concerns. During the 1990s, West Virginia led the United States in per capita deaths from ATV crashes, with rates approximately eight times higher than the national average. In an attempt to curtail this trend, West Virginia enacted legislation in 2004 to regulate ATV use. This law prohibi

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to characterize whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure from various all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) like snowgroomers, snowmobiles and forwarders, and to investigate how frequently the drivers' cervical spine is positioned in a non-neutral rotational position during operation.
METHODS: Field measurements of WBV were measured according to the international standard ISO 2631-1 in 19 ATVs. Simultaneous recordings of frequency and duration of rotational neck movements exceeding 15 degrees were achieved through an observational method, PEOflex.
RESULTS: The sum

Hand-arm vibration was measured on the handlebars of snowmobiles (N = 29) and a postal inquiry was made among reindeer herders, N = 2,705. Since many subjects had used also other vibrating tools a snowmobile group proper (N = 334) was established, and in this group 18% of the subjects reported that they had experienced white finger attacks and 48% numbness of the hands. The age-adjusted prevalence of the white finger syndrome was more than three times higher in the snowmobile group than in the controls. The frequency-weighted acceleration of snowmobile vibration was 3.5 m/s2, and risk evaluati

OBJECTIVE: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have rapidly gained popularity in urban environments worldwide. While promoted as sustainable and convenient, their widespread adoption has led to a rise in injury rates, particularly traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Despite increasing recognition of e-scooter-related head trauma, the literature remains fragmented and lacks focused synthesis.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases was conducted in March 2025. Studies were included if they reported on e-scooter-related TBIs in real-world settin

QUESTION: I know that all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are commonly used for recreational purposes, and that recently an adolescent was injured while driving one. What are the dangers of ATV use among adolescents, and what are some preventative measures to recommend to families in my clinic to reduce ATV-related injuries in children?
ANSWER: There is a disproportionately high rate of ATV accidents in children compared with adults, and the safety of ATVs has become a public health concern in recent years because of their association with increased pediatric morbidity and mortality. Children account

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) remain a significant source of death and injury among youth. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the scope of the problem, the risk factors involved, crash-related outcomes and costs, and injury prevention strategies. There are currently more than 100 pediatric ATV-related fatalities each year and over 30,000 emergency department visits, with a potential annual cost for deaths and injuries approaching $1 billion. Major risk factors include lack of training, operating adult-size ATVs, riding as or carrying passengers, riding on the road, and not w

Children and youth account for a disproportionately high number of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) related injuries and deaths. This study explored whether and how youth personality factors such as sensation seeking (including thrill seeking and behavioral intensity) and youth safety consciousness predict risky A TV riding behaviors. Survey information was collected from farm families in Georgia having youth who were active on farms. Data were analyzed from 104 youth between the ages 10 through 14 years who were active users ofATVs. Boys and girls had similar exposure to ATVs. Risky ATV riding behav

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: All-terrain vehicles (ATV) use by children leads to severe injury and death. Since the US Consumer Product Safety Commission consent decree expired in 1998, there has been little movement in regulating ATV use for children (<16 yr). The authors hypothesized that states with laws and regulations restricting pediatric ATV use may abrogate excess death compared with states without such restrictions.
METHODS: Pediatric mortality data reported to the consumer product safety commission from 1982 to 1998 were analyzed as well as state all-terrain vehicle requirements compiled by

As input to a winter use plan, activity, fuel use, and tailpipe exhaust emissions of over snow vehicles (OSV), including five snow coaches and one snowmobile, were measured on a designated route in Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Engine load was quantified in terms of vehicle specific power (VSP), which is a function of speed, acceleration, and road grade. Compared to highway vehicles, VSP for OSVs is more sensitive to rolling resistance and less sensitive to aerodynamic drag. Fuel use rates increased linearly (R2>0.96) with VSP. For gasoline-fueled OSVs, fuel-based emission rates of carbon m
