Health and environmental licensing: analysis of an Environmental Impact Study on oil wells in Northeast Brazil.

The interrelation between health and the environment lies at the core of the environmental licensing process. Economic development impacts human health, as seen in the oil industry, known for pollution, illness, chemical spill accidents, and their implications for public health. This article presents the findings of research that analyzed the inclusion of human health in an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for oil well drilling in northeastern Brazil. Using a method that applied a matrix of health and environmental indicators categorized, systematized, and critically assessed, it found a lack

Coupled Numerical Simulation of CO2 - EOR Flooding: Integrating Multiphysics Interactions.

Numerical simulation of CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) critically advances hydrocarbon field development by quantifying multiphase saturation dynamics during CO2-driven displacement. This study establishes a cylindrically configured 1D triple-phase mathematical model integrating Darcy's law and mass conservation principles, employing an implicit pressure-explicit saturation (IMPES) finite-difference scheme to resolve spatiotemporal evolution of aqueous, oleic, and gaseous phase saturations. Systematic incorporation of chemical reaction kinetics, viscosity-pressure coupling, and dynamic re

Development of an offshore response guidance tool for determining the impact of SSDI on released gas and benzene from artificial subsea oil well blowout simulations.

We present an analysis of 2225 simulations of artificial oil well blowouts in nearshore and offshore waters of Newfoundland, Canada. In the simulations, we coupled the VDROP-J and TAMOC models to simulate the fate and transport of oil and gas from the release to the sea surface. Simulations were conducted with and without subsea dispersant injection. We analyzed the simulation database to quantify the mass fraction of oil and gas that surfaces, the mass fraction of released benzene that surfaces, and the horizontal offset to the surfacing zone. These data are also synthesized to yield empirica

The oil spill transport across the shelf-estuary interface.

Oil spills caused by ship collisions and offshore oil wells are an ongoing risk for estuaries in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The fate and transport of the oil spill across the interface between a bar-built estuary and the adjacent coast are influenced by multi-scale forcing mechanisms and their corresponding interactions. Of primary interest are the alongshore currents on the shelf encountering strong tidal flows at the estuary entrance. A new cross-scale model was developed for Galveston Bay to reproduce the multi-scale flows. The model was employed in regionally-distributed numerical Lagran

Optimization and treatment of wastewater of crude oil desalting unit and prediction of scale formation.

In this article, one of Iran's southwest oil fields that produces 3200 barrels per day (bbl/d) of wastewater from oil and gas processing was investigated. Experimental analysis of oil reservoir water and desalting wastewater disposal of crude oil desalting unit was performed. First, water was treated with a reverse osmosis membrane. As a result, the purified water, with lower total dissolved solids (TDS) and pH, was a suitable candidate for injection into the adjacent wells of the crude oil desalting unit. The effectiveness and compatibility of this wastewater to the formation water of the oil

Methane and hydrogen sulfide emissions from abandoned, active, and marginally producing oil and gas wells in Ontario, Canada.

Abandoned, active, and marginally producing (producing <1700 m3/day of natural gas or <1.6 m3/day of oil) oil and gas (O&G) wells emit methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a highly toxic gas, but measurements to quantify these emission rates are limited or lacking. Here, we conduct 85 measurements of CH4 and H2S emission rates from 63 abandoned, active and marginally producing gas wells and a wetland area overlying a possible undocumented well in Ontario, the Canadian province with the longest history of O&G development. Our measurements show that abandoned wells

Characterizing Flaring from Unconventional Oil and Gas Operations in South Texas Using Satellite Observations.

Over the past decade, increases in high-volume hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas extraction in the United States have raised concerns with residents living near wells. Flaring, or the combustion of petroleum products into the open atmosphere, is a common practice associated with oil and gas exploration and production, and has been under-examined as a potential source of exposure. We leveraged data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Spectroradiometer (VIIRS) Nightfire satellite product to characterize the extent of flaring in the Eagle Ford Shale region of south Texas, one of the most product

Environmental implications of drilling mud and cuttings disposal on land degradation in oil-producing regions of Iraq.

Land degradation represents a major environmental challenge in Iraq, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions experiencing intensive oil and gas development. Among the various anthropogenic drivers, drilling wastes generated during oil well construction remain an underinvestigated contributor to soil degradation and environmental deterioration. These wastes, including drilling muds and drill cuttings, contain complex mixtures of clays, chemical additives, hydrocarbons, salts, and trace metals and are commonly disposed of through on-site burial practices. This study develops an integrated ana

Offshore oil and gas infrastructure plays a minor role in marine metapopulation dynamics.

Decommissioning consequences of offshore oil and gas infrastructure removal on marine population dynamics, including connectivity, are not well understood. We modelled the connectivity and metapopulation dynamics of three fish and two benthic invertebrate species inhabiting the natural rocky reefs and offshore oil and gas infrastructure located in the Bass Strait, south-east Australia. Using a network approach, we found that platforms are not major sources, destinations, or stepping-stones for most species, yet act as modest sources for connectivity of Corynactis australis (jewel anemone). Sulfate-reducing bacteria corrosion at 60 °C in the CO2-saturated artificially tight gas produced water containing condensate oil.

In the gas field, steel corrosion issues induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are a crucial factor in pipeline service failure. The effect of condensate oil on SRB corrosion in CO2-containing gas field environments at high temperatures remains unknown. In this work, the inhibition behavior of SRB corrosion at 60 °C induced by condensate oil in the CO2-saturated artificially tight gas produced water was investigated in-depth. The experimental results indicated that SRB can maintain a certain level of bioactivity in the test solution at 60 °C, although the cell concentrations appear to dec

Study on the extension law of fractures in shale reservoirs under impact loads.

Fracturing technology is an important technique in the development of shale reservoirs. Compared with conventional hydraulic fracturing, explosive fracturing technology has the advantages of low cost and environmental protection. Relevant research results have shown that this technology can effectively improve the efficiency of shale oil and gas extraction. To further reveal the mechanism of reservoir fracture propagation under explosive fracturing, this paper conducted experimental research on the propagation law of complex fractures in shale reservoirs under impact load. The dynamic elastic

Improving the efficiency of DNA extraction from iron incrustations and oilfield-produced water.

The quantity and quality of DNA isolated from environmental samples are crucial for getting robust high-throughput sequencing data commonly used for microbial community analysis. The differences in the nature and physicochemical properties of environmental samples impact DNA yields, and therefore, an optimisation of the protocols is always recommended. For instance, samples collected from corroded areas contain high concentrations of metals, salts, and hydrocarbons that can interfere with several steps of the DNA extraction protocols, thereby reducing yield and quality. In this study, we compa

Reservoir Souring - Latest developments for application and mitigation.

Sulphate-reducing prokaryotes (SRP) have been identified in oil field fluids since the 1920s. SRP reduce sulphate to sulphide, a toxic and corrosive species that impacts on operational safety, metallurgy and both capital and operational cost. Differences in water cut, temperature, pressure and fluid chemistry can impact on the observed H2S concentration, meaning that an increase in H2S concentration does not always correlate with activity of SRP. However it wasn't until the 1990s that SRP activity was accepted as the leading cause of reservoir souring (i.e. an increase in H2S concentrations) i

Atmospheric dry deposition of sulfur and nitrogen in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region, Alberta, Canada.

Due to the potential ecological effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems from atmospheric deposition in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR), Alberta, Canada, this study was implemented to estimate atmospheric nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) inputs. Passive samplers were used to measure ambient concentrations of ammonia (NH3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric acid/nitrous acid (HNO3/HONO), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the AOSR. Concentrations of NO2 and SO2 in winter were higher than those in summer, while seasonal differences of NH3 and HNO3/HONO showed an opposite trend, with higher values in

Coexistence of methanogenesis and sulfate reduction in a sulfate-adapted enrichment culture from an oil reservoir.

Oil reservoirs are complex ecosystems where microorganisms play a vital role in hydrocarbon degradation, mostly with methanogenesis as the terminal electron-accepting process. Especially in offshore oil reservoirs, sulfate-containing seawater is injected during the oil production to maintain the reservoir pressure, resulting in increased sulfate reduction in the reservoir. Methanogenesis and sulfate reduction are typically thought to be mutually exclusive because sulfate reducers outcompete methanogens thermodynamically for hydrogen and acetate. However, coexistence is evident in environments

Insights into the effects of anthropogenic activities on oil reservoir microbiome and metabolic potential.

Microbial communities have long been observed in oil reservoirs, where the subsurface conditions are major drivers shaping their structure and functions. Furthermore, anthropogenic activities such as water flooding during oil production can affect microbial activities and community compositions in oil reservoirs through the injection of recycled produced water, often associated with biocides. However, it is still unclear to what extent the introduced chemicals and microbes influence the metabolic potential of the subsurface microbiome. Here we investigated an onshore oilfield in Germany (Field

Investigation of the transport and metabolic patterns of oil-displacing bacterium FY-07-G in the microcosm model using X-CT technology.

AIMS: Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is dedicated to enhancing oil recovery by harnessing microbial metabolic activities and their byproducts within reservoir rocks and fluids. Therefore, the investigation of microbial mobility and their extensive distribution within crude oil is of paramount importance in MEOR. While microscale models have been valuable for studying bacterial strain behavior in reservoirs, they are typically limited to 2D representations of porous media, making them inadequate for simulating actual reservoir conditions. Consequently, there is a critical need for 3D mo

X-ray radiation monitor for measuring solids content in fluid fine tailings.

The extraction of bitumen from oil sands produces fluid fine tailings (FFT) consisting mainly of water, sands, clay, and residual bitumen. Generally, devices with radioactive sources are used to measure the variation of FFT density or solids concentration inline, but to date there is no suitable device for in situ monitoring in tailings storage facilities such as large tailings ponds. In this study, an alternative method using high-resolution spectrometry based on a low radiation intensity source and a cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector was used to measure the solids content in tailings samples
