BACKGROUND: Several cross-reacting proteins have been identified as responsible of the co-occurrence of pollinosis and plant-derived food allergy. This association has been mainly described in the birch-apple syndrome but other pollens such as Olea europaea and other fruits may also contain homologous proteins.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between sensitization to allergens of Olea europaea pollen and confirmed plant-derived food allergy, in addition to investigate if any pattern of clinical hypersensitivity of food allergy reaction (oral allergy syndrome (OAS) or anaphylaxis) and/

Polyphenols are constituents of all higher plants. However, their biosynthesis is often induced when plants are exposed to abiotic stresses, such as drought. The aim of the present work was to determine the phenolic status in the roots of olive trees grown under water deficit conditions. The results revealed that roots of water-stressed plants had a higher content of total phenols. The main compound detected in well-watered olive tree roots was verbascoside. Oleuropein was established as the predominant phenolic compound of water-stressed plants. The oleuropein/verbascoside ratio varied betwee

The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of olive leaf extract (OLE) on genotoxicity and oxidative damage in cultured human blood cells treated with permethrin (PM) in the presence of a rat liver S9 mix containing cytochrome P 450 enzymes. Anti-genotoxic activities of OLE were studied using sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosome aberration (CA) tests and furthermore total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidative status (TOS) were examined to determine the oxidative damage. Our results clearly revealed that treatment with PM (200 mg/l) alone increased SCE an

Olea Europaea is the most important allergenic tree in Southern Italy and in the Naples area. Its pollination period lasts from the middle of April to the end of June. In our pollinosis patients we observed frequency of sensitization of 13.05% to Olea pollen. That means that this pollen follows Parietaria (47.80%) and Gramineae (34.70%) regarding the frequency of allergic sensitization. In an attempt to evaluate the degree of allergic sensitization to Olea pollen and the concordance of various tests, we studied 24 asthmatic patients with skin positivity to only this pollen using commercially a

BACKGROUND: Although synthetic preservatives and antioxidants may have high antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, they are usually associated with adverse effects on human health. Currently, there is a growing interest in natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of two medicinal plant extracts and one active compound. Olive leaf extracts (0.2, 0.3, and 0.4% w/v), oleuropein (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6% w/v), thyme oil (0.1%), and oleuropein in combination with thyme oil (0.4% w/v and 0.1% v/v) were used against three bacterial strains (Esch

Ethnopharmacological use of plant natural extracts has been known since ancient times. The optimization of plant molecule extraction is fundamental in obtaining relevant extraction yields. The main purpose of this study was to understand the role of different extraction techniques (solid-liquid, ultrasound, Soxhlet, and microwave) and solvents (water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, dichloromethane, and hexane) on the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of extracts from Olea europaea (olive) and Acacia dealbata (mimosa). Crude plant extracts were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity aga

BACKGROUND: The olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (OLF) is a major agricultural pest, whose control primarily relies on the use of chemical insecticides. Therefore, development of sustainable control strategies is highly desirable. The primary endosymbiotic bacterium of OLF, 'Candidatus Erwinia dacicola', is essential for successful larval development in unripe olive fruits. Therefore, targeting this endosymbiont with antimicrobial compounds may result in OLF fitness reduction and may exert control on natural populations of OLF.
RESULTS: Here, we evaluate the impact of compounds with a

In the last few years interest in the clinical aspects of Olea europaea (O.e.) pollen allergy has increased. For many years we have observed in our geographical area a perennial pattern of clinical symptoms in subjects with monosensitization to O.e. allergens without any worsening during the olive pollen season. We tried to demonstrate the clinical relevance of O.e. sensitization in our patients and, moreover, to determine why this pattern is elicited. We selected a group of 26 patients with rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma and an immediate positive skin reaction only to O.e. pollen extract. U

Olive pruning residues represent a promising source of bioactive compounds. This study presents the first single-step supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) approach for the simultaneous recovery of phenols, carotenoids, and tocopherols from Olea europaea leaves and branches. Using bio-ethanol-modified CO2, the optimized method achieved recoveries of 76% for oleuropein, 84% for α-tocopherol, 88% for lutein, and 90% for β-carotene. Compared to ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), SFE yielded lower absolute amounts than the exhaustive UAE reference methods, while maintaining high recovery efficie

Olive (Olea europea L.) is one of the oldest and most important fruit tree species cultivated in the Mediterranean region. Various plant tissues, drupes, and olive oil contain several phenolics (including verbascoside, although it is present in the plant at a low level) that are well-known for their highly beneficial effects on human health. An in vitro olive cell suspension culture (cultivar Cellina di Nardò, "CdN") was established, characterized for its growth and morphological features. Furthermore, a vital and relatively uniform population of protoplasts was generated from the olive suspen

In the present study, a hydroxytyrosol-rich Olea europaea L. fruit extract (OFE) was added to three thoroughly green formulations-hydrogel, oleogel, and cream-in order to evaluate their antiviral activity against HSV-1. The extract was characterized by different analytical techniques, i.e., FT-IR, XPS, and TGA. HPLC analyses were carried out to monitor the content and release of hydroxytyrosol in the prepared formulations. The total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity were investigated through Folin-Ciocâlteu's reagent, DPPH, and ABTS assays. The ability of the three formulations to co

Gastric ulceration is among the most serious humanpublic health problems. Olea europea L. cv. Arbequina is one of the numerous olive varieties which have scarcely been studied. The reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of the olive plant make it a potential prophylactic natural product against gastric ulcers. Consequently, the main goal of this study is to investigate the gastroprotective effect of Olea europea L. cv. Arbequina leaf extract. LC-HRMS-based metabolic profiling of the alcoholic extract of Olea europea L. cv. Arbequina led to the dereplication of 18 putative compoun

Doxorubicin is an anthracycline that is commonly used as a chemotherapy drug due to its cytotoxic effects. The clinical use of doxorubicin is limited due to its known cardiotoxic effects. Treatment with anthracyclines causes heart failure in 15-17% of patients, resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction, the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, intracellular calcium dysregulation, the deterioration of the cardiomyocyte structure, and apoptotic cell death. Polyphenols have a wide range of beneficial properties, and particular importance is given to Bergamot Polyphenolic Fraction; Oleuropein, on

Hydrolysis of oleuropein, the main phenol in olive (Olea europaea L.) leaf extracts, to oleuropein aglycon and other subsequent products in the hydrolytic pathway can be catalyzed by different enzymes. Three of the most used hydrolases were assayed to catalyze the process, and β-glucosidase from Aspergillus niger was selected. Acceleration of the enzymatic hydrolysis by ultrasound (US) was studied using a Box-Behnken design (duty cycle, amplitude, cycle time) and an oleuropein standard, and the optimum US conditions for achieving maximum yield of oleuropein aglycon were 0.5s/s duty cycle, 50%

With the increasing popularity of olive oil, the cultivation area of Olea europaea L. (olive) trees has been expanding, and the processing and utilization of olive leaves are gaining more attention. Besides oleuropein, the main active compounds in olive leaves include luteolin and its glycosides. Through fractionation, a component rich in key active substances, designated OLE, was prepared from olive leaves. Our activity analysis showed that luteolin exhibits excellent DPPH radical scavenging and higher anti-inflammatory activities compared to its glycosides. To enhance the activity of OLE, a

The wild olive (Olea europaea L.) is one of the most iconic Mediterranean forest tree species and the ancestor of many cultivated olive varieties. In this study, twelve wild olive genotypes from three distinct subspecies (subsp. europaea, subsp. guanchica, and subsp. maroccana) were grown under ambient ([CO2]amb) and enriched CO2 atmospheres ([CO2]enr), subject to two watering regimes (WW - Well-watered/WS - Water-stressed). We measured water use at leaf and whole-plant levels, along with growth traits, leaf gas exchange, and leaf isotopic carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen composition (δ15N), to diff

The main phenolics compounds in Olea europaea L. leaves are oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, hydroxytyrosol hexoside, verbascoside and apingenin-7-glucoside, being oleuropein the most abundant. In the literature, there are different methods to determine some of these compounds, which imply an analytical preparation for their determination. In this line, the use of techniques based on infrared spectroscopy is presented as a promising alternative. Therefore, a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) calibration, validation and prediction to determine the main metabolites in olive leaves has been developed.
