Protective role of Siberian onions against toxin-induced liver dysfunction: an insight into health-promoting effects.

Siberian onions (SOs) are delicious wild vegetables. Their taste is most unique, not only like scallions but also like leeks or garlic. They also have a traditional medicinal value for anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, and anti-pyretic analgesia, particularly facilitating hepatoprotective effects. The current study investigates the potential mechanism of SOs against toxin-induced liver dysfunction. BALB/c mice were administrated with SO or silymarin by oral gavage for one week, followed by injecting carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) to induce hepatic fibrosis. The effect of SO against hepatic fibro

Cooking Alters the Metabolites of Onions and Their Ability to Protect Nerve Cells from Lead Damage.

Onions (Allium cepa L.) are nutritious vegetables; however, variations in processing methods can influence their chemical composition and functional properties. Raw processing and cooking are the two main food-processing methods for onions, but it is not clear what kind of changes these two methods cause. In the present study, ultrahigh-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) was utilized to observe the changes in onion composition during cooking and to investigate the protective effects of raw and cooked onion extracts against lead damage in vitro and at the cellular lev

Biomass-derived carbon nano-onions for the effective elimination of organic pollutants and oils from water.

Oil spillage and leakage of organic solvents have caused severe environmental and ecological damages. It is of great significance to develop a cost-efficient and green adsorbent material with high uptake efficiency to separate the oil-water mixture. In this work, biomass-derived CNOs were first time explored in the adsorption of organic pollutants and oils from water. Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) with hydrophobicity and oleophilicity were cost-effectively synthesized in an energy efficient flame pyrolysis process using flaxseed oil as a carbon source. The as-synthesized CNOs without any further s

A Role of the FUZZY ONIONS LIKE Gene in Regulating Cell Death and Defense in Arabidopsis.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is critical for development and responses to environmental stimuli in many organisms. FUZZY ONIONS (FZO) proteins in yeast, flies, and mammals are known to affect mitochondrial fusion and function. Arabidopsis FZO-LIKE (FZL) was shown as a chloroplast protein that regulates chloroplast morphology and cell death. We cloned the FZL gene based on the lesion mimic phenotype conferred by an fzl mutation. Here we provide evidence to support that FZL has evolved new function different from its homologs from other organisms. We found that fzl mutants showed enhanced disease

The Efficacy of Onion Extract on the Prevention or Treatment of Scars: A Systematic Review.

Scars are common and debilitating outcomes of burn injury, with no current consensus regarding the gold standard in scar management. Noninvasive interventions such as silicone gels are popular adjuvant treatments due to ease of application. Onion extract (OE) has been proposed as a potential scar treatment modality due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. A systematic search of the literature was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane for articles published between January 2000 and December 2021. Inclusion criteria were studies (1) involved OE gel or OE treatment and (2

Dissipation and Removal of the Etofenprox Residue during Processing in Spring Onion.

The dissipation and removal of the etofenprox residue was studied in spring onion grown under greenhouse conditions. Samples of spring onion were collected at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 days after last application, and removal rates of etofenprox by washing and drying processes were measured. Samples were extracted with acetone and partitioned with dichloromethane. The dichloromethane layer was then concentrated, cleaned up with florisil column chromatography, and analyzed with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UVD). At the fortification levels of 0.5, 1.0

Dual mechanisms give rise to biphasic stomatal opening in onion.

Stomata are controllable micropores on the leaf surface that regulate gas exchange and water loss. Pore aperture adjustment is a mechanical process whereby changes in guard cell turgor drive changes in cell shape, resulting in stomatal opening or closure. Previous computational models of kidney-shaped stomata primarily relied on guard cells elongating upon turgor increase, a process dependent on cell wall properties, such as anisotropy in stiffness, strain-stiffening, and polar fixing. Finite element method simulations using experimentally derived 3D meshes from confocal imaging of Allium cepa

"Onion" flap: a novel technique for reconstruction of burn nail deformities.

BACKGROUND: Nail fold deformities from burn injury frequently result in eponychial retraction, proximal nail exposure, pain, and distal phalangeal function impairment. Secondary nail abnormalities including longitudinal ridges, surface cracks, and fragility are common sequelae to nail fold deformities. Surgical management of postburn nail fold deformity is challenging because of scar contractures involving the dorsum of digits and lack of surrounding healthy tissues that can be used as source of soft tissue for reconstruction. Previous reports have discussed several methods for reconstruction

Onion and garlic extracts lessen cadmium-induced nephrotoxicity in rats.

Cadmium (Cd) is a well-known nephrotoxicant inducing kidney damage via oxidative stress. Since kidney is the critical target organ of Cd toxicity, this study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of onion (Allium cepa L.) and garlic (Allium sativum L.) aqueous extracts on Cd-induced renal oxidative stress in male Wistar rats. The control group received double distilled water alone and Cd group was challenged with 3CdSO4 x 8H2O (as Cd) (1.5 mg/100 g bw/day per oral) alone. Extract-treated groups were pre-treated with varied doses (0.5 ml and 1.0 ml/100 g bw/day per oral) of onion and/

Geographical differentiation of onions (Allium cepa) cultivated in South Korea revealed by untargeted metabolomics and chemometric analysis.

Onions (Allium cepa) are widely cultivated in South Korea, yet region-specific metabolomic profiles remain underexplored. To address this gap, we conducted untargeted metabolomic profiling of ethanol extracts from onions collected at 56 cultivation sites using UPLC-TIMS-QTOF MS. The analysis detected 2339 (positive mode) and 1350 (negative mode) molecular features, among which 242 compounds were annotated through spectral library matching. To extend coverage beyond the limited annotated fraction, accurate mass-based formula prediction identified 1992 unique molecular formulas, which were subse

Singlet Oxygen Generated by Quercetin and Gallic Acid Leads to Oxidative Fragmentation of Flavonols in Onions and Leek.

For the first time, singlet oxygen was shown to be generated by quercetin and gallic acid under mild conditions (37 °C, pH 7) and exclusion of light. In contrast to kaempferol, quercetin induced its own oxidative fragmentation, yielding protocatechuic acid (3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid) and 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid as the corresponding counterparts. If a 4-molar excess of gallic acid was coincubated, quercetin fragmentation reached 25 mol %, but now also kaempferol gave 7 mol % p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The hydroxybenzoic acids formed always showed the B-ring substitution pattern of the precurso

Effects of Red Onion Peel Extracts on Oxidative Stress in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Polyphenols are natural compounds with antioxidant properties that help prevent chronic diseases. Red onion (Allium cepa) peels are an underutilized source of polyphenols, offering a sustainable opportunity for the valorization of agricultural by-products. Polyphenol-rich extracts were obtained from red onion peels using subcritical water extraction and adsorption resin chromatography. Their biological effects were evaluated in Caenorhabditis elegans under oxidative stress conditions. A multi-omics approach integrating transcriptomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics was applied to assess molecul

Antioxidant Films of Starch Blends With Onion Peel Extract for Packaging Coriander.

Utilization of by-products from food and vegetable processing has gained immense importance in recent times since the addition of their extracts into biopolymers yields active films. The added advantages include abundance, cost-effectiveness, functionality, and their environmentally friendly nature. In the present work, active food packaging materials were developed by incorporating onion peel extract (OPE) in starch-polyvinyl alcohol-montmorillonite (starch-PVA-MMT) biopolymer films. The physicochemical, mechanical, thermal, surface, and antioxidant properties of the films were analyzed. The
