Comparative emission and energy performance of biochar production versus in-situ burning of Gorean agrobyproducts.

Uncontrolled open-field burning of agricultural residues remains a pervasive source of air pollutants and greenhouse gases in Korea, particularly for high-burning-ratio crops such as perilla, pepper, pear, grape, and apple residues. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the environmental and energy implications of replacing open-field burning with biochar production from these major residue streams. First, mass- and energy-normalized emission factors for CO, CH₄, CO₂, NOₓ, N₂O, and particulate matter were quantified for both in-situ combustion and biochar combustion scenarios. Alth

Deployment to bases with open burn pits and mortality of US Military Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Five million US Veterans had possible exposure to open burn pits used for waste disposal through service in Iraq (2003-2011) and Afghanistan (2001-2014). Burn pits generate toxic exposures that may be associated with adverse health outcomes. We examined all-cause and cause-specific mortality in relation to deployment to bases with open burn pits. METHODS: We analysed a cohort of 474 634 Veterans who received some healthcare from the Veterans Health Administration, linked to Department of Defense deployment records to identify assignments to bases with burn pits. In multivariable

Bromination of Carbon and Formation of PBDD/Fs by Copper Bromide in Oxidative Thermal Process.

Brominated aromatic compounds are unintentionally generated during various thermal processes, including municipal solid waste incineration, electric-waste open burning, and secondary copper smelting. Copper (Cu) plays an important role in the formation of brominated aromatic compounds. In the present study, the thermochemical behaviors of Cu and Br in model samples, including copper bromide (CuBr2) and activated carbon, were studied using in situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and thermogravimetry. Quantification of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs) was also condu

Environmental quality monitoring and impact assessment of solid waste dumpsites in high altitude sub-tropical regions.

Solid Waste Management (SWM) in high altitude regions is critically phased because of the non-availability of suitable facilities for the treatment and handling of large quantities of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Open burning practices at hill slopes were noticed which affect the surrounding environment. Hence, it became essential to measure the environmental components around the dumpsites to examine the impacts and suggest new technological solutions. The pollution parameters were monitored in and around the dumpsites, and the data was analysed using statistical tools. The assessment of air

A Community-Engaged Oral History Study as a Tool for Understanding Environmental Justice Aspects of Human Exposures to Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment Emissions in Colfax, LA.

This study investigates environmental justice (EJ) themes related to siting a hazardous waste thermal treatment facility near a low-income community of color. We investigated effects of living near a hazardous waste thermal treatment facility through three EJ aspects: recognitional, procedural, and distributive justice. The study involved the collection of oral history interviews from residents of Colfax, a town in Grant Parish, Louisiana, that hosts an open burn/open detonation hazardous waste thermal treatment facility. The facility processes materials such as munitions, theme park waste, an

Effective methods for the decontamination of healthcare waste: Ozone and UV-C radiation process.

Human-generated waste, including infectious healthcare waste, poses significant risks to public health and the environment. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the global production of infectious waste, emphasizing the need for safe and sustainable waste management practices. While autoclaves are commonly used for on-site disposal, alternative methods like ozone gas and UV-C radiation offer environmentally friendly options that effectively eliminate pathogens without leaving toxic residues. Inadequate waste management can contribute to disease transmission, while open burning releases harmful

Hydrogen cyanide and carboxyhemoglobin assessment in an open space fire-related fatality.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) can be a major contributory factor in death from fire-related inhalation injury. Although carbon monoxide (CO) is considered the lethal agent of smoke in fires, its liability as a cause of death is sometimes debatable. The purpose of this report is to present the case of an 80-year-old man with locomotor disabilities who died due to an open space fire of vegetation debris and household waste in his yard. We evaluated here the concentrations of HCN and carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and their contribution to the mechanism of death. In addition, the risk factors and the contribu

Current understanding of the impact of United States military airborne hazards and burn pit exposures on respiratory health.

Millions of United States (U.S.) troops deployed to the Middle East and Southwest Asia were exposed to toxic airborne hazards and/or open-air burn pits. Burn pit emissions contain particulate matter combined with toxic gasses and heavy metals. Ongoing research has demonstrated that exposures to the airborne hazards from military burn pits have profound and lasting health and wellness consequences. Research on the long-term health consequences of exposure to open burn pits has been limited. Work continues to understand the scope of the health impacts and the underlying pathobiology following ex

Global black carbon aerosol: Spatiotemporal distributions, drivers, and health impacts.

Black carbon (BC) is a key short-lived climate pollutant and a toxic component of PM2.5. This review synthesizes global BC studies published since 2000 and evaluates its spatiotemporal distribution, source contributions, meteorological drivers, and health risks. The compiled evidence shows high concentrations are mainly found in South Asia and Africa, while low concentrations occur in Europe and North America. South American records were limited in the screened literature, and the apparent lower concentrations in this region may partly reflect sparse monitoring coverage rather than a regionwid

Development of an eco-friendly method to convert life expired composite propellant into liquid fertilizer.

Large quantity of composite propellants is produced as waste due to life expiry of missiles/rejection of propellant lots during manufacturing. The environmental protection agency does not allow the hazardous materials for open burning/open detonation. Therefore, a systematic study has been carried out to develop a method for the disposal of composite propellant into liquid fertilizer without affecting the environment. In this study, propellant compositions were digested in dilute nitric acid followed by neutralization with 5M KOH solution to get precipitated out aluminium as aluminium hydroxid

Unraveling the main chemical mechanism of PM2.5 pollution caused by open burning of sugarcane straw during winter in southern China: The Pivotal Role of NOx and NH3 Oxidation-Neutralization.

Guangxi is one of the main sugarcane-producing areas in China, with its cultivated sugarcane area accounting for more than 60 % of the national total. Open burning of sugarcane stalks is thus a significant contributor to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution in the region during winter. In this study, a PM2.5 pollution event is analyzed in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, from February 24-28, 2022. Results showed a significant increase in PM2.5 concentrations and its components during the pollution period. Among them, K+, Cl-, Na+, and EC, which are heavily influenced by open straw burning

Behavioral interventions related to plastic waste management in low-and middle-income countries: a systematic review using the behavior change wheel and the theoretical domains framework.

Addressing the mounting plastic waste problem requires system-level solutions, along with interventions that promote behavioral change. In low-resource countries, inadequate, if not absent, waste management systems lead to unsafe disposal practices, including open burning. While theory-informed approaches are essential for identifying enablers and barriers to target behavior change, their application is limited in these settings. Given the lack of a theory-driven synthesis of behavioral strategies to address plastic waste, this systematic review aimed to: (1) synthesize behavioral intervention

The impact of military occupational combustion smoke inhalation on neuroinflammation and brain health.

Airborne combustion emissions from military burn pits, wildfires, and urban/industrial sources are increasingly recognized as a component of the neurotoxic exposome, with potential consequences extending beyond cardiopulmonary disease to brain health. These aerosols comprise heterogeneous mixtures of fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM₂.₅/PM₀.₁), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, metals, and reactive gases whose composition varies with fuel type, combustion efficiency, and atmospheric aging. A Disposable Diaper Collection Project in Langa, Cape Town, South Africa: A Pilot Study.

In developing countries, there is currently no established waste management plan that includes resource recovery from used disposable diapers (DDs) apart from incineration and landfilling. In low-income areas with limited storage space, the complex composition and odour of used DDs make it impossible to manage properly if not supported by effective waste management systems. In the absence of effective waste management, DDs are dumped in open spaces, burned or buried. These actions pose threats to the safety and health of humans, animals and the environment. Separation and collection of DDs are

Seasonal variation and size distribution of aromatic acids in urban aerosols in Beijing, China.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Aromatic acids are an integral component of organic acids in the atmosphere, contributing to the formation of climate-altering brown carbon (BrC). To better understand the sources and formation processes of aromatic acids, we collected size-segregated particulate matter samples in urban Beijing from April 2017 to January 2018, which were analyzed using solvent-extraction followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Phthalic acid (o-PhA) had the greatest average annual concentration, followed by terephthalic acid (p-PhA), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-OHBA), dehydroabietic acid (DA), syringic a

Source appointment and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in paddy grain from Thailand and Laos.

Rice is a staple meal for the majority of Asians. However, human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from paddy grain is largely unknown in Thailand and Laos. Therefore, information on the quantitative measurement and assessment of the health problems caused by PAHs was analyzed. The results showed that the concentrations of total PAHs in paddy grain in Thailand and Laos were 38.86 ± 5.13 and 11.35 ± 1.96 ng g-1, respectively. The highest concentration of PAHs in Thailand was B[k]F, whereas D[a,h]A was found to be the highest in Laos. A p-value less than 0.05 was defined, which showed
