The biomechanical efficacy of a dressing with a soft cellulose fluff core in protecting prone surgical patients from chest injuries on the operating table.

Pressure ulcers are soft-tissue damage associated with tissue exposure to sustained deformations and stress concentrations. In patients who are proned for ventilation or surgery, such damage may occur in the superficial chest tissues that are compressed between the rib cage and the support surface. Prophylactic dressings have been previously proven as generally effective for pressure ulcer prevention. In this study, our goal was to develop a novel computational modelling framework to investigate the biomechanical efficacy of a dressing with a soft cellulose fluff core in protecting proned surg

Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip Arthroplasty Using a Morphometrically Optimized Femoral Stem, a Conventional Operating Table, Without Fluoroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Our experience with direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty (THA) suggests that it can be performed successfully with a morphometrically optimized metaphyseal-diaphyseal engaging femoral stem (NOT a short stem), a regular operating room table (NOT a special custom table), and WITHOUT intraoperative fluoroscopy. We report our minimum 2-year results. METHODS: A retrospective review of a single-surgeon series of primary direct anterior approach THAs was performed. All procedures were performed on a regular table, without fluoroscopy, using a cementless tapered femoral stem. C

Does A Hinged Operating Table Facilitate Sagittal Correction in Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion With Smith-Peterson Osteotomy? A Radiographic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Osteotomies allow the restoration of appropriate sagittal alignment; however, closure of osteotomies can be challenging. Typical closure involves compressing pedicle screw heads across the rods, potentially causing screw loosening and failure. Motorized hinged operating tables are often used to assist with controlled closure of osteotomies without manual compression, but there is no published research quantifying the amount of correction provided solely by changes in the table angle. QUESTION/PURPOSE: What is the incremental amount of correction achieved by change in the table ang

Anthropometric Changes in the Upper Lip Between the Standing Position in the Clinic and Supine Position on the Operative Table in Secondary Cleft Lip Nasal Deformities.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated changes in lip height and length by position in cleft lip nasal deformity patients who underwent treatment with Millard technique. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records and an anthropometric analysis of photographs were performed in 209 cases of cleft lip nasal deformity. In the photogrammetric analysis, the lip height and length were calculated with respect to the intercanthal width. To evaluate the change in the difference between the cleft- and noncleft-side measurements between the standing and supine positions, the difference between the cleft- a

On-table completion imaging after tibial bypass is performed more frequently in patients who ultimately require return to the operating room and long-term bypass revisions.

OBJECTIVE: On table completion imaging (CI), using duplex ultrasound examination or angiography, has been traditionally considered a critical step to assess technical defects at the time of lower extremity bypass (LEB) creation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of CI with postoperative short-term and long-term outcomes after LEB using tibial target vessels to treat chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). METHODS: All patients who underwent tibial LEB for CLTI from 2014 to 2023 were identified from the Vascular Quality Initiative database. The study cohort was stratified

Operating room air delivery design to protect patient and surgical site results in particles released at surgical table having greater concentration along walls of the room than at the instrument tray.

BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, recommendations have included that personnel not involved in procedures releasing airborne contaminants reduce their exposure by moving >2 m away. We tested whether air particle concentrations in operating rooms (ORs) are greater in the periphery, downstream from the supply airflow. METHODS: We analyzed data from 15 mock surgical procedures performed in 3 ORs. Two ORs were modern, one with a single large diffuser system above the surgical table, and the other using a multiple diffuser array design. An air particle counting u

Brachial neuritis or Parsonage-Turner syndrome: A problem of liability. A presentation of 3 cases.

Neuralgic amyotrophy, brachial neuritis or Parsonage-Turner syndrome is a rare neuromuscular involvement of unknown aetiology. When it onsets in connection with a health care act, such as childbirth or surgery, a malpractice argument is often used as a cause of adverse outcome, usually due to an incorrect position of the patient on the operating table, a circumstance which directly involves the anesthesia area. Three cases are presented of Parsonage-Turner syndrome following very different surgery, with different results as regards prognosis. A review and discussion of bibliography is presente

Quantitative assessment of environmental blood contamination in interventional radiology operating rooms: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Health care-associated infections remain a global threat to patient safety, with contaminated environmental surfaces serving as important pathogen transmission vectors. Interventional radiology operating rooms are high-frequency blood exposure settings, yet quantitative contamination data remain scarce. This study applied a quantitative occult blood detection method to assess environmental blood contamination in interventional operating rooms. METHODS: A quantitative occult blood detection method (HGBTEST WIPES with AI-based image analysis) measured hemoglobin residues at 142 samp

Effect of heated-air blanket on the dispersion of squames in an operating room.

High-fidelity, predictive fluid flow simulations of the interactions between the rising thermal plumes from forced air warming blower and the ultra-clean ventilation air in an operating room (OR) are conducted to explore whether this complex flow can impact the dispersion of squames to the surgical site. A large-eddy simulation, accurately capturing the spatiotemporal evolution of the flow in 3 dimensions together with the trajectories of squames, is performed for a realistic OR consisting of an operating table (OT), side tables, surgical lamps, medical staff, and a patient. Two cases are stud

A retrospective analysis of surgical outcomes following direct anterior hip arthroplasty with or without a surgical extension table.

PURPOSE: Using a surgical extension table during total hip arthroplasty (THA) is widely considered state-of-the-art. However, intra-operative leg positioning requires additional time and leg length determination can be challenging. Our study's aim was to compare patient outcomes, particularly leg length precision, following surgery with or without an extension table. METHODS: This retrospective study included data from medical records of 324 patients who underwent THA using the direct anterior approach by one surgeon at a Swiss cantonal hospital (2015-2017). Patients were grouped by table typ

The Modified Lithotomy: A Surgical Position for Lower Extremity Wound Care Procedures in Super Morbidly Obese Patients. A Case Study.

UNLABELLED: Operative positioning of morbidly obese patients presents unique challenges and can cause complications, especially when the operative field involves the proximal lower extremity or genitoperineal region. PURPOSE: The purpose of this case study was to describe a modified lithotomy operative positioning technique that has helped the authors improve care of these patients. METHODS: Double-layer, foam padding at least 4 inches thick is secured to the top and sides of 2 small rolling preparation tables using 3-inch silk tape to create "lithotomy" leg holders, the operating table is r

Traction table versus standard table total hip arthroplasty through the direct anterior approach: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The direct anterior approach (DAA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) was originally performed with a supine patient on a specialised traction table, but the approach can also be performed on a standard operating table. Despite cost and safety implications, there are few studies directly comparing these techniques and table choice remains largely surgeon preference. The purpose of this review was to compare the clinical outcomes and complication profiles of traction and standard table DAA for primary THA. METHODS: The authors searched databases for relevant studies, screening in dup

Effect of Using a Cardiac Catheterization Table-Stabilizing Stick on the Quality of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory: A Simulation-Based Study.

Rapid defibrillation and high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are necessary for patients with cardiopulmonary arrest, one of the most serious and frequently encountered complications in cardiac catheterization laboratories. However, when the catheterization table is withdrawn from its neutral position for fluoroscopy, it is unstable and unsuitable for resuscitation because of its cantilever structure. To stabilize the table in its withdrawn position, the use of a table-stabilizing stick might improve CPR quality. To investigate the effect of using a cardiac catheterization table-st
