Amyloid beta biomarker for dementia detection by hyperspectral ophthalmoscope images.

The escalating prevalence and economic burden of dementia underscore the urgency for innovative detection methods. This study investigates the potential of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to detect dementia by analyzing retinal changes associated with amyloid beta (Aβ) formations. Leveraging a dataset of 3,256 ophthalmoscopic images from 137 participants aged 60 to 85 years, categorized into dementia and non-dementia groups via the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), we extracted features from five key regions of interest (ROIs) identified for their pronounced changes in Aβ biomarkers. The analy

Recent Advances and Clinical Application of Color Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope.

Scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (SLOs) have been available since the early 1990s, but they were not commonly used because their advantages were not enough to replace conventional color fundus photography. In recent years, color SLOs have improved significantly, and the colored SLO images are obtained by combining multiple SLO images taken by lasers of different wavelengths. A combination of these images of different lasers can create an image that is close to that of the real ocular fundus. One advantage of the advanced SLOs is that they can obtain images with a wider view of the ocular fundus

[Morphometric features in the lamina cribrosa observed by a scanning laser ophthalmoscope].

PURPOSE: We describe a method for the morphometric analysis of the pores in the lamina cribrosa using a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO: Rodenstock company, Germany). METHODS: Four eyes with glaucoma and four eyes with non-glaucoma patients were examined. Sixteen consecutive images were acquired from the surface of the retina to the bottom of the optic disc excavation with +0.25 diopter increments by a He-Ne laser (633 nm) under 20 degree field of view. The images from each section were processed and combined with the aid of Macintosh software. RESULTS: Eyes with physiological cu

Confocal fundus imaging with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope in eyes with cataract.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: The study aimed to determine the influence of increased intraocular light scatter on the contrast in scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) images and to examine to what extent SLO images can visualise the fundus through media opacities due to cataract. METHODS: Intraocular light scatter was estimated from measurements of letter contrast sensitivity before and after cataract surgery in five eyes. SLO images were obtained before and after surgery using confocal apertures of 1, 2, 4, and 10 mm, at laser wavelengths of 633 and 780 nm. Visibility of the fundus was determined by meas

Ophthalmoscopic visualization of the inferior ophthalmic vein through a chorioretinal coloboma.

PURPOSE/METHODS: In a patient with a coloboma of the optic nerve, inferior retina and choroid, and deep portions of the sclera, a retrobulbar vessel moved irregularly relative to the retinal vessels, which moved contiguously with the posterior globe. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: Fluorescein angiography showed the retrobulbar vessel filling slightly later than overlying retinal vessels. We conclude that the retrobulbar vessel was a vein situated inferiorly to the optic nerve.

Laser indirect ophthalmoscope photocoagulation in an incubator for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

Argon blue-green or diode laser indirect ophthalmoscope photocoagulation, performed through the transparent wall of an incubator, was used to treat threshold retinopathy of prematurity in two premature infants who were in poor systemic condition and could not be treated out of the incubator. Despite technical difficulties posed in one or both cases by their lateral position, small pupils, persistent tunica vasculosa lentis, and hazy cornea, there were no systemic complications and the retinopathy regressed in both cases.

[Fundus-controlled microperimetry with the scanning laser ophthalmoscope in macular diseases].

BACKGROUND: Scanning laser microperimetry allows focal sensitivity testing of any localization of the retina under direct visual control. Physiological or involuntary fixation shifts can be corrected by manual fundus-tracking. METHODS: For static fundus-controlled microperimetry we used a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope equipped with a helium-neon laser as light source for background illumination and for generating the stimuli by acousto-optic modulation. Fundus imaging was achieved by an infrared diode laser scanning synchronous with the helium-neon laser. In comparison computerized s

A multi-color video-ophthalmoscopes allows to measure the spectral distribution of light absorption of blood in the human retina.

Based on our previously developed mono-color video-ophthalmoscope a multi-color video-ophthalmoscope was developed. Using narrow band transmission filters, this instrument allows to measure the pulsatile cardiac cycle induced blood volume changes in the human retina for any wavelength in the sensitivity range of the used CMOS-camera. In this key experiment, video sequences (8 s, 25 fps, 200 frames) of the optic nerve head (ONH) were acquire for seven wavelengths between 475 nm and 677 nm one after the other. After image registration of all frames of each video sequence (to compensate for eye m

The evolution of healthcare through the eye: From ancient superstition to the ophthalmoscope.

The eye has emerged as a vital window into systemic health and a powerful tool for proactive, preventive healthcare. This study explored how ideas from antiquity to the 19th century gradually led to the emergence of ophthalmoscopy and the contemporary model of healthcare through the eye. Key developments across the Eurasian continent were examined through the lenses of cultural anthropology, historical medicine and ophthalmic science. Texts were selected to illustrate major conceptual transitions concerning disease causation and the perceived relationship between the eyes and internal organs.

Deep compressed multichannel adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope.

Adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) reveals individual retinal cells and their function, microvasculature, and micropathologies in vivo. As compared to the single-channel offset pinhole and two-channel split-detector nonconfocal AOSLO designs, by providing multidirectional imaging capabilities, a recent generation of multidetector and (multi-)offset aperture AOSLO modalities has been demonstrated to provide critical information about retinal microstructures. However, increasing detection channels requires expensive optical components and/or critically increases imaging time.
