The article presents a study on 82 patients hospitalized in the Clinic of Ophthalmology of Cluj-Napoca, during 1993-1999, with anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (AION). There are presented the clinical and functional aspects of AION, especially the importance of static perimetry (PS) for the diagnosis, and her superiority, compared with the dynamic perimetry, in the monitoring of the patients with chronic nerve head ischaemia. After treatment, 32.9% of the cases have a favorable evolution, but PS reveals sequela visual field defects at all eyes which suffered AION. Long-term monitoring of th

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether characteristics of optic nerve swelling assist in distinguishing between optic neuritis and anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.
METHOD: Optic nerve stereophotograph review by masked observers.
RESULTS: Altitudinal swelling, pallor, arterial attenuation, and hemorrhage are found more commonly in anterior ischemic optic neuropathy than in optic neuritis.
CONCLUSION: Optic disc appearance does help to distinguish anterior ischemic optic neuropathy from optic neuritis, although there are overlapping features.

IMPORTANCE: Semaglutide, a glucagonlike peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA), has recently been implicated in cases of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), raising safety concerns in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D).
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential association between semaglutide and NAION in the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) network.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a retrospective study across 14 databases (6 administrative claims and 8 electronic health records). Included were adults with T2D taking semaglutide, oth

BACKGROUND: Although nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is considered a disorder that primarily affects the optic nerve head, optical coherence tomography (OCT) shows peripapillary and foveal subretinal fluid associated with optic disc swelling from NAION. We sought to further evaluate retinal and vitreous changes in patients with NAION.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with NAION at the New England Eye Center between 2013 and 2017 were evaluated using OCT. The presence and distribution of subretinal fluid was analyzed. Evidence of other vitreoretinal changes, including vitreo

PURPOSE: The non-arteritic form of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) is the most common acute optic neuropathy among individuals over the age of fifty, yet little is known about how the disorder affects color vision. We tested the hypothesis that color vision correlates with visual acuity in patients with non-arteritic AION. We also evaluated the patterns of visual field loss in a subgroup of patients who manifested relative sparing of color vision.
OBSERVATIONS: Records of forty-five patients with non-arteritic AION who had been evaluated at Duke University over a consecutive four-ye

BACKGROUND: While often idiopathic, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy occasionally may occur from an identifiable cause.
METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 19-year-old woman with unremarkable medical and ophthalmic histories developed visual loss from nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in her right eye after otherwise uneventful dental extraction of the inferior third molars.
CONCLUSIONS: Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy may rarely occur after dental extraction. Potential pathophysiologic mechanisms of this rare occurrence are discussed.

BACKGROUND: To describe a case of optic neuropathy associated with intravascular lymphoma (IVL).
METHODS: Case report and review of the literature.
RESULTS: A case of asymmetric binocular vision loss is described, preceded by transient vision loss. Associated optic perineural enhancement and enhancing and diffusion-positive cortical lesions were observed on magnetic resonance imaging. Biopsy of the cerebellum revealed exclusively intraluminal neoplastic B-cells consistent with IVL.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with IVL may rarely present with optic nerve involvement, presumably due to small vessel

Dengue fever is caused by a flavivirus. This infection is endemic in the tropics and warm temperate regions of the world. Ocular manifestations of dengue fever include subconjunctival, vitreous, and retinal haemorrhages; posterior uveitis; optic neuritis; and maculopathies, haemorrhage, and oedema. However anterior ischemic optic neuropathy is a rare presentation. Optic nerve ischemia most frequently occurs at the optic nerve head, where structural crowding of nerve fibers and reduction of the vascular supply may combine to impair perfusion to a critical degree and produce optic disc oedema. BACKGROUND: Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is characterized by sudden and painless loss of vision in the eye, accompanied by pallid swelling of the optic disc. Its etiology is unknown and no medical therapy has been proven effective in treating this condition. Optic nerve decompression surgery, a proposed treatment for NAION, involves making two or more slits or a window in the tissue surrounding the optic nerve, thereby allowing cerebrospinal fluid to escape, and theoretically reducing the pressure surrounding the optic nerve.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Postoperative vision loss (POVL) as related to spinal surgery and the prone position has garnered increasing attention in the US over the last 15 years, resulting in an increase of litigations submitted to the legal system. It might be associated with the development of new surgical techniques involving complex instrumentation of the spine. By 2000, the magnitude of this problem was such that the American Society of Anesthesiologists developed a Postoperative Visual Loss Registry in an effort to better understand and evaluate this devastating operative complication.

Cup-disc ratios in the fellow eyes of 26 patients with unilateral, nonarteritic, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy were compared with the ratios in fellow eyes of 29 patients with unilateral idiopathic or demyelinative optic neuritis. The ratios in both groups were also compared with the ratios of a large group of normal subjects evaluated in a population survey. Observers measured the cup-disc ratio by viewing color stereophotographs. The cup-disc ratios of the fellow eyes of patients with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy were significantly smaller on average than were those of the fellow

Criteria for diagnosis of acute ischemic optic neuropathy (acute ION) were proposed: acute ION was divided into two groups, ie, acute anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (acute AION) and acute posterior ischemic optic neuropathy (acute PION). Acute AION is characterized by pale or sometimes hyperemic papilledema in the early stage, followed by postneuritic optic atrophy. In contrast, acute PION shows normal optic disk in the early stage followed by development of simple optic atrophy. We analyzed 31 eyes of 24 cases with acute AION and 20 eyes of 18 cases with acute PION. The diagnostic criteri
