First, we criticize the validity of the principle of lateral inhibition. Second, on the basis of illusory phenomena and stabilized retinal images, we point out that the retina does not code the absolute luminance; the retina forwards a relative luminance sketch towards higher levels of the visual system. However, at the level of conscious processing the perceptual counterpart of absolute luminance, brightness, is available. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that a reconstruction process is carried out by the visual system, which recovers the inner representation that corresponds to the ret

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the networks of visual functional areas using electric brain stimulation (EBS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).
METHODS: Thirteen patients with intractable focal epilepsy in which visual functional areas were identified by EBS were enrolled. An electric stimulation at 50Hz was applied to electrodes during several tasks. DTI was used to identify subcortical fibers originating from the visual functional areas identified by EBS.
RESULT: The electrical stimulation induced three types of visual symptoms: visual illusions (change of vision), visual hall

Our modifications of the methods of otolith organs examination were reported. One of these methods is eccentric rotation without the support of the body which was held in two groups of the persons: control group of 32 healthy persons and 48 patients with unilateral vestibular loss. The second method of otolith organs investigation was evaluation of them by producing dynamic optogravitational reactions and measuring an angle of the eyeballs deviation and time of illusion. Two groups--one consisting 102 healthy persons and second 91 persons with unilateral hearing loss were examined. It was stat

Cases in which salient visual stimuli do not register consciously are known to occur in special conditions, such as the presentation of dissimilar stimuli to the two eyes or when images are stabilized on the retina. Here, we report a striking phenomenon of 'visual disappearance' observed with normal-sighted observers under natural conditions. When a global moving pattern is superimposed on high-contrast stationary or slowly moving stimuli, the latter disappear and reappear alternately for periods of several seconds. We show that this motion-induced blindness (MIB) phenomenon is unlikely to ref

It has previously been shown that when a moving and a stationary display are superimposed, illusory self-rotation (circular vection) is induced only when the moving display appears as the background. Three experiments are reported on the extent to which illusory forward self-motion (forward vection) induced by a looming display is inhibited by a superimposed stationary display as a function of the size and location of the stationary display and of the depth between the stationary and looming displays. Results showed that forward vection was controlled by the display that was perceived as the b

Three experiments investigating the basis of induced motion are reported. The proposition that induced motion is based on the visual capture of eye-position information and is therefore a subject-relative, rather than object-relative, motion was explored in the first experiment. Observers made saccades to an invisible auditory stimulus following fixation on a stationary stimulus in which motion was induced. In the remaining two experiments, the question of whether perceived induced motion produces a straight ahead shift was explored. The critical eye movement was directed to apparent straight

BACKGROUND: Atypical perception of visual illusions is well-documented in schizophrenia (SZ) and thought to be a consequence of impairments in visual processes including perceptual organization (PO). The Ebbinghaus illusion, in which a circle appears larger or smaller depending on the size of surrounding circles, is facilitated by PO, and the extent to which the surrounds (i.e., context) influence perception of the center circle can be considered an index of context sensitivity. In the present study, as part of a broader investigation of the impact of a novel visual remediation (VR) program fo

The Necker cube pattern was flashed repetitively with regular, 5.12 s interstimulus intervals and EEG activity was recorded by means of non-polarizable Ag/AgCl electrodes and averaged. The subjects reported the actual subjective interpretation of the pattern by pushing one of two buttons, i.e. they were motivated to interpret each stimulus. A negative potential shift (lasting about 2.5 s increasing in a more or less linear way and, reaching the final amplitude of about 11 mV), developed gradually before the stimulus onset. Positive correlation was found between the duration and amplitude of DC

When the eyes track a moving object, the image of a stationary target shifts on the retina colinearly with the eye movement. A compensation process called position constancy prevents this image shift from causing perceived target motion commensurate with the image shift. The target either appears stationary or seems to move in the direction opposite to the eye movement, but much less than the image shift would warrant. Our work is concerned with the question of whether position constancy operates when the image shift and the eye movement are not colinear. That can occur when, during the eye mo

The Pulfrich phenomenon is a stereo-illusion resulting from latency disparities in the visual pathways. It is common after optic neuritis, but is also to be found with other conditions. The symptoms are often difficult for the patient to explain and for the physician to understand. Symptoms may be sufficiently disturbing to significantly interfere with a patient's life (e.g., prevention of driving). Treatment with the use of monocular tints is simple and effective.

The perception of shape, it has been argued, also often entails the perception of time. A cookie missing a bite, for example, is seen as a whole cookie that was subsequently bitten. It has never been clear, however, whether such observations truly reflect visual processing. To explore this possibility, we tested whether the perception of history in static shapes could actually induce illusory motion perception. Observers watched a square change to a truncated form, with a "piece" of it missing, and they reported whether this change was sudden or gradual. When the contours of the missing piece

An isolated dot appears double outside a small disparity range called Panum's fusional area. In random-dot stereograms (RDSs), however, this doubling, or diplopia of dot elements is not evident at any disparity. Nevertheless, depth is perceived up to disparities that greatly exceed Panum's fusional limit. Either one is unaware of dot diplopia at disparities exceeding Panum's fusional limit or the fusion limit is extended. To examine these possibilities, we developed a novel RDS in which dichoptically color-coded dots have a distinctive color when fused, and return to their intrinsic colors whe

Dyslexic readers have been found to have a reduced line-motion illusion. This has been interpreted as evidence for an attention deficit of magnocellular origin. We show that this interpretation has severe problems: 1) to link reduced line-motion illusion to attention overlooks other factors, 2) to link the line-motion illusion specifically to the magnocellular system is problematic because the illusion can be obtained with isoluminant stimuli, 3) reduced illusory motion in dyslexic individuals may reflect sensory deficits, and 4) to link dyslexia specifically to the magnocellular system is in

Abstract. Observers can recover motion with respect to the head during an eye movement by comparing signals encoding retinal motion and the velocity of pursuit. Evidently there is a mismatch between these signals because perceived head-centred motion is not always veridical. One example is the Filehne illusion, in which a stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction to pursuit. Like the motion aftereffect, the phenomenal experience of the Filehne illusion is one in which the stimulus moves but does not seem to go anywhere. This raises problems when measuring the illusion by moti

Fast and accurate object recognition is crucial for effective behavior in dynamic visual environments. In some cases, the visual system must overcome ambiguity in visual input during object recognition, such as when an object is partially hidden behind another. Recurrent processing between higher- and lower-order areas is thought to play a role in resolving such ambiguity, enabling the filling in of missing visual information. Here we examined this claim using a novel paradigm in which partial object images appear "occluded" by an illusory Kanizsa figure, perception of which also depends on re

The Pulfrich phenomenon is a stereoillusion in which a pendulum swinging at right angles to the line of gaze appears to be describing an elliptical path when absorbing filters are placed in front of one eye. We used two sets of polaroid glasses as adjustable filters. A spot on a modified oscilloscope served at a pendulum bob. Twenty-nine former patients with a history of optic neuritis and visual acuities of greater than or equal to 6/6 in both eyes and twenty-two normal subjects underwent examinations. The patients showed pathological recordings which separated them from the control subjects.

The authors describe a new visual illusion first discovered in a natural setting. A cyclist riding beside a pair of sagging chains that connect fence posts appears to move up and down with the chains. In this illusion, a static shape (the chains) affects the perception of a moving shape (the bicycle), and this influence involves assimilation (averaging) rather than opposition (differentiation). These features distinguish the illusion from illusions of motion capture and induced motion. The authors take this bicycle illusion into the laboratory and report 4 findings: Naïve viewers experience th

Phenomenally strong visual illusions are described in which the motion of an object's cast shadow determines the perceived 3-D trajectory of the object. Simply adjusting the motion of a shadow is sufficient to induce dramatically different apparent trajectories of the object casting the shadow. Psychophysical results obtained with the use of 3-D graphics are reported which show that: (i) the information provided by the motion of an object's shadow overrides other strong sources of information and perceptual biases, such as the assumption of constant object size and a general viewpoint; (ii) th
