Prefoveal floaters as a differential diagnosis to optic neuritis: "mouches dormantes".

This case series describes a new optical coherence tomography (OCT) specific observation relevant to the differential diagnosis of patients with suspected optic neuritis. A tiny prefoveal floater, only detectable by OCT, was found responsible for the symptoms in three patients, one of whom had been referred with unilateral delayed visual evoked potentials. This case series suggests that with increased use of OCT in routine clinical care, entoptic phenomena can be demonstrated as a relevant differential diagnosis to optic neuritis. Patients should be explained the benign nature of their symptom

Colouration by total internal reflection and interference at microscale concave interfaces.

Many physical phenomena create colour: spectrally selective light absorption by pigments and dyes1,2, material-specific optical dispersion3 and light interference4-11 in micrometre-scale and nanometre-scale periodic structures12-17. In addition, scattering, diffraction and interference mechanisms are inherent to spherical droplets18, which contribute to atmospheric phenomena such as glories, coronas and rainbows19. Here we describe a previously unrecognized mechanism for creating iridescent structural colour with large angular spectral separation. Light travelling along different trajectories

Multiphotonic Ablation and Electro-Capacitive Effects Exhibited by Candida albicans Biofilms.

This work reports the modification in the homogeneity of ablation effects with the assistance of nonlinear optical phenomena exhibited by C. albicans ATCC 10231, forming a biofilm. Equivalent optical energies with different levels of intensity were irradiated in comparative samples, and significant changes were observed. Nanosecond pulses provided by an Nd:YAG laser system at a 532 nm wavelength in a single-beam experiment were employed to explore the photodamage and the nonlinear optical transmittance. A nonlinear optical absorption coefficient -2 × 10-6 cm/W was measured in the samples studi

Optical van-der-Waals forces in molecules: from electronic Bethe-Salpeter calculations to the many-body dispersion model.

Molecular forces induced by optical excitations are connected to a wide range of phenomena, from chemical bond dissociation to intricate biological processes that underpin vision. Commonly, the description of optical excitations requires the solution of computationally demanding electronic Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). However, when studying non-covalent interactions in large-scale systems, more efficient methods are desirable. Here we introduce an effective approach based on coupled quantum Drude oscillators (cQDO) as represented by the many-body dispersion model. We find that the cQDO Hamil

Extended Depth-of-Field Intraocular Lenses: An Update.

Extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) is a new intraocular lens (IOL) technology in the treatment of presbyopia. In contrast to multifocal (MF) IOLs, EDOF lenses create a single elongated focal point, rather than several foci, to enhance depth of focus. In this way, EDOF IOLs aim to reduce photic phenomena, glare, and halos, which have been reported in MF IOLs. A potential disadvantage is a decrease of retinal image quality if the amount of the aberrations is excessively increased. Frequently, EDOF IOLs are combined with MF optical designs; for this reason, EDOF IOLs are commonly a subject of confusi

Fluids in the anterior part of the optic nerve in health and disease.

New techniques have recently made it possible to study the flow of fluids (blood, axoplasm, and interstitial fluid) in the anterior part of the optic nerve. Blood flow has been reviewed previously; axoplasm and interstitial fluid are considered in this review. General concepts of axoplasmic transport (anterograde and retrograde) are outlined, and the role of axoplasmic transport in the pathogeneses of optic disc edema of various types, in glaucoma, and in ischemic and toxic optic neuropathies is discussed. The probable sources of interstitial fluid in the anterior part of the optic nerve are c

Excitonic Structure and Dynamics in Two-Dimensional Halide Perovskites.

Layered two-dimensional halide perovskites (2D HPs) have emerged as a versatile platform for studying strongly bound excitons in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, structural symmetry breaking, and pronounced coupling to lattice vibrations. In this Mini-Review, we focus on the monolayer limit of this class of materials and highlight recent progress in understanding excitonic fine structure and optical selection rules, chiral and spin-dependent optical response, exciton-phonon coupling and exciton relaxation pathways, and the breakdown of simple band-edge pictures in 2D HPs in which organic a

Movement phosphenes in optic neuritis: a new clinical sign.

Positive visual phenomena (phosphenes) elicited by eye movements have been described in normal individuals and in myopes with vitreous opacities. In the present paper we describe eye movement-induced phosphenes that appear to be related to optic nerve involvement in patients with optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis. This phenomenon is not associated with vitreous or retinal defects, nor is it similar to phosphenes observed in normal individuals. Instead, it shares many characteristics with the well-known Lhermitte sign and is believed to represent a similar phenomenon.

Bioinspired Nanostructures for Combined Hydrophobicity and Light Propagation: From Natural Prototypes to Applications.

Bioinspired nanostructures that integrate hydrophobicity with light propagation have attracted growing interest for creating multifunctional and environmentally adaptive interfaces. While both functionalities have been extensively studied independently, the integration of optical and hydrophobic properties into a single surface remains a developing area. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental mechanisms, synergistic effects, and potential applications arising from the coupling between light propagation and hydrophobicity. We first introduce representative biological p

Giant near-field nonlinear electrophotonic effects in an angstrom-scale plasmonic junction.

Plasmons facilitate a strong confinement and enhancement of near-field light, offering exciting opportunities to enhance nonlinear optical responses at the nanoscale. However, despite significant advancements, the electrically tunable range of the nonlinear optical responses at nanometer-scale plasmonic structures remains limited to a few percents per volt. Here, we transcend the limitation of the nanometer regime by expanding the concept of electrophotonics into angstrom-scale platform, enabling high-performance modulation of near-field nonlinear optical responses inaccessible in prior archit

Efficient simulation of optical spectra via machine learning and physical decomposition of environmental effects.

Simulations of optical spectra can provide key insights to aid experimental interpretation of electronic excitation phenomena. For chromophores in the condensed phase, these spectra, which incorporate the coupling between electronic excitation and molecular and solvent nuclear motions, can be simulated using excitation energies obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of the chromophore and solvent. Here, we present a hybrid scheme that exploits machine learning and physically informed spectral densities to show that as few as 25 ground and excited state energetic gradient calculations can

Excitonic Physics in Emerging 2D Semiconductors: A First-Principles Many-Body Perspective from Photodetection to Solar Energy Conversion.

Chemically and structurally diverse two-dimensional semiconductors exhibit a broad range of excitonic and optical phenomena that have direct implications for optoelectronic functionality. We examine these materials from a first-principles many-body perspective, emphasizing the connection between microscopic excitonic structure and optoelectronic functionality. Reduced symmetry and orbital character produce polarization-selective absorption, while dimensionality, dielectric screening, and exciton fine structure govern binding energies and radiative behavior. In layered systems, interlayer elect

Lightning streaks of Moore: a cause of recurrent stereotypic visual disturbance.

Lightning streaks of Moore are recurrent stereotypic vertical visual phenomena that must be distinguished from similar symptoms due to retinal ischemia, optic disk abnormalities, or mechanical retinal or optic nerve stimulation. These brief flashes are oriented vertically and are perceived in the temporal visual field after eye movement. Senescent posterior vitreous changes induce collapse and detachment with persistent vitreoretinal adhesions through which mechanical forces exert traction on the macula and retina, inducing photopsias. Clinical recognition of these symptoms avoids unnecessary

Undesired light images associated with ovoid intraocular lenses.

Ovoid intraocular lenses (IOLs) accounted for approximately 35% of the lenses implanted in 1991. Despite their popularity among surgeons, patient observations and complaints suggest that ovoid lenses are associated with undesired optical images postoperatively. A pilot clinical study was carried out to test that hypothesis. A multicentered investigation of 289 cases with well-centered IOLs determined that 45% of 168 patients with ovoid lenses observed unwanted optical phenomena at some time after surgery, whereas 17% of 121 patients with round IOLs had similar complaints. Based upon the prelim

C. V. Raman's exploration in optics-a spectrum of history: editorial.

C. V. Raman (1888-1970) was one of the pioneering scientists to have emerged from India during the colonial era. His scientific explorations were driven by his curiosity to understand wave phenomena. Naturally, optics and related physical effects were at the heart of such an exploration. Apart from his Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the Raman effect, his research included topics such as oblique diffraction, light scattering from liquids and amorphous solids, classical and quantum nature of light, acousto-optics, haloes and coronae (speckles), crystal dynamics and soft modes, optics of minera

Rapid functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes in polar solvents.

Fluorescent semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) hold considerable promise for photonics. Furthermore, their optical characteristics can be improved by functionalization, which generates additional spectral features. However, the importance of the solvent in which the SWCNT modification is conducted remains underexplored. In this work, the complex relationships between solvent, dispersant, and SWCNTs were untangled to unravel the underlying phenomena. Through a systematic investigation of SWCNT reactivity in a broad spectrum of solvents, supported by multiscale modeling enabl
