One of the most common infectious disease-related causes of death globally, particularly in low- and middle-income nations, persists: tuberculosis. At a manifestation of globalization, causes of death keep growing. As it happens, we have developed a sensor that quickly recognizes tuberculosis. The sensor operates in the (1-2 THz) frequency band, resulting in exemplary recognition and accuracy. Our present work asserts the design and numerical analysis of a hexagonal hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) sensor for detecting tuberculosis (TB) cells adopting the finite element method (FEM)

In this work, we continue our study of a new method for the detection of ionizing radiation with the potential for a dramatic improvement in coincidence time resolution (CTR) for time-of-flight positron emission tomography (ToF-PET) using the modulation of a material's optical properties instead of the scintillation mechanism. Our previous work has shown that for non-scintillation materials such as bismuth silicon oxide (BSO) and cadmium telluride (CdTe), their refractive index can be modulated by annihilation photon interactions. The ultrafast nature of this process however remains unexplored

The selective absorbance detection of mercury(II) (Hg(2+)) and lead(II) (Pb(2+)) ions using ferrocene-based colorimetric ligands and miniaturized multiple internal reflection (MIR) systems implemented in a low-cost photonic lab on a chip (PhLoC) is reported. The detection principle is based on the formation of selective stable complexes between the heavy metal ion and the corresponding ligand. This interaction modulates the ligand spectrum by giving rise to new absorbance bands or wavelength shifting of the existing ones. A comparative study for the detection of Hg(2+) was carried out with two

A transfer-matrix framework is developed for dynamic optical fingerprinting of modeled tear-film perturbations using a thermally self-referenced multi-defect one-dimensional photonic crystal. Four coupled defect compartments represent aqueous-index variation, hydration-dependent optical-thickness change, mucin/inhomogeneity-associated loss, and lipid-composite evolution, while a sealed reference cavity compensates common-mode thermal drift. Time-dependent transmission spectra are analyzed using corrected defect-mode shifts and local peak-transmission changes. The resulting hybrid fingerprints

Temporal focusing (TF) is a key tool in wide-field two-photon excitation fluorescence microscopy for confining fluorescence excitation to a thin layer around the focal plane. TF is typically implemented with 100 femtosecond laser pulses and large microscope magnifications (>40). In this work, we demonstrate that performing TF with a random speckled illumination rather than a collimated beam significantly improves the optical sectioning for long pulses and small magnifications. We derive simple formulas of the optical sectioning as a function of speckle angular divergence, pulse bandwidth, and

We present a computational study on the optical manipulation of anisotropic gold nanoparticles, rods, and disks in aqueous environments using ultrashort pulsed photonic nanojets and photonic hooks. Using three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations and analytical models of anisotropic polarizability, we analyze how shape, orientation, and surrounding medium influence the optical force landscape. Our results show that deviations from spherical particle geometry introduce strong orientation dependence, with optical forces varying by up to a factor of 5-10 across particle orientati

A new series of Cd(II) macrocyclic complexes has been synthesized via template condensation of 1,13-diamino-4,7,10-trioxatridecane with tribulin and its derivatives in the presence of CdCl2·H2O (1:1:1 molar ratios). Structural characterization by FTIR, UV-Vis, 1H & 13C NMR, XRD, mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses supports an octahedral geometry. The stability of the complexes in solution phase was validated through time-resolved UV-Visible spectroscopic analysis over 24 h, revealing no detectable signs of dissociation. Photoluminescence properties were examined in the solid state, revea

The retina, behind the transparent optics of the eye, is the only neural tissue whose physiology and pathology can be non-invasively probed by optical microscopy. The aberrations intrinsic to the mouse eye, however, prevent high-resolution investigation of retinal structure and function in vivo. Optimizing the design of a two-photon fluorescence microscope (2PFM) and sample preparation procedure, we found that adaptive optics (AO), by measuring and correcting ocular aberrations, is essential for resolving putative synaptic structures and achieving three-dimensional cellular resolution in the m

An optical time-temperature steam sensor is presented based on the loss of structural color in a supramolecularly cross-linked cholesteric liquid crystal photonic coating. A gradual decrease in the selective reflection band is observed upon exposure to temperatures above 105 °C related to the cholesteric to isotropic transition temperature. The linear polymers with carboxylic acid side chains provide physical cross-linking through hydrogen bonding that allows a time-temperature-dependent order loss through the dynamic equilibrium between supramolecular dimer and free monomer states. Steam is a

We experimentally demonstrate a new optical filter design based on a vertically coupled photonic crystal (PhC) cavity and a bus waveguide monolithically integrated on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The use of a vertically coupled waveguide gives flexibility in the choice of the waveguide material and dimensions, dramatically lowering the insertion loss while achieving very high coupling efficiencies to wavelength scale resonators and thus allows the creation of PhC-based optical filters with very high extinction ratio (>10 dB).

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is an optically transparent semiconductor used in many optoelectronic devices. In this work, the porous properties of an ITO membrane coated on the surface of a bent optical fiber probe (BOFP) were explored in the effort to develop an optical fiber crystal violet sensor. It was discovered that the flowable electrons promoted to ITO's conduction band by UV photons enhanced the adsorption of crystal violet onto the porous ITO membrane and significantly increased the sensitivity of optical fiber evanescent wave absorption spectrometry for detecting this compound in aqueous

Photonic matrix-vector multiplication (MVM) constitutes a core computational primitive in on-chip photonic neural networks, enabling ultrahigh-speed multiply-accumulate operations. Most existing photonic MVM implementations do not fully exploit the intrinsic multidimensional degrees of freedom of light, thereby constraining parallelism, scalability, and functional flexibility. Here, we present a 192-dimensional multiplexed photonic computing architecture that simultaneously harnesses 32 wavelengths, three spatial modes, and dual polarizations, enabling highly parallel and fully reconfigurable

Developing DNA/RNA nucleoside prodrugs that absorb in the red-to-near-infrared is crucial for applications requiring deep-tissue penetration. This study reports the rational design and synthesis of a novel thiocarbonyl analog, 5-(5-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)thiophen-2-yl)-2',3',5'-tri-O-benzoyl-6-aza-2,4-dithiouridine (DATU), efficiently activated through one- and two-photon absorption in the red-to-near-infrared spectrum. We report DATU's electronic structure and its photophysical and triplet-state properties under both excitation, comparing these results to its carbonyl counterpart, 5-(5-(4-(

The control and active manipulation of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in photonic systems are fundamental in the development of modern spin optics and topological photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate the control of an artificial Rashba-Dresselhaus (RD) SOC mediated by photochemical reactions in a microcavity filled with an organic single crystal of photochromic phase-change character. Splitting of the circular polarization components of the optical modes induced by photonic RD SOC is observed experimentally in momentum space. By applying an ultraviolet light beam, we control the spatial molecular

This work presents an integrated chip of a resonant cavity light emitter and photon detector (RCLEPD) to address the requirements of wearable optical medical devices for compact size, high efficiency, and interference resistance sensors. The optical radiation pattern and light extraction efficiency of the resonant cavity light emitting diode (RCLED) as well as the optical absorption spectrum of the resonant cavity enhanced photon detector (RCEPD) are theoretically simulated. Additionally, the wavelength selectivity of the RCEPD absorption spectrum is analyzed. Material epitaxial growth of RCLE

The manipulation of optical modes directly in a multimode waveguide without affecting the transmission of undesired signal carriers is of significance to realize a flexible and simple structured optical network-on-chip. In this Letter, an arbitrary optical mode and wavelength carrier access scheme is proposed based on a series of multimode microring resonators and one multimode bus waveguide with constant width. As a proof-of-concept, a three-mode (de)multiplexing device is designed, fabricated, and experimentally demonstrated. A new, to the best of our knowledge, phase-matching idea is employ

Chlorobenzene (C6H5Cl) is a flammable liquid with high vapor activity, which is a severe threat to the environment and human health. Therefore, it is essential to develop a highly efficient sensor to detect C6H5Cl vapor. Herein, we developed a UiO-66 three-dimensional photonic crystal (3D PC) optical sensor and investigated its sensing properties toward the C6H5Cl vapor. The UiO-66 3D PCs optical sensor shows a high sensitivity of C6H5Cl vapor, in the concentrations range of 0-500 ppm, the reflectance intensity response to be 0.06% ppm with a good linear relationship, detection limit can reach

We developed a simple and efficient method to construct 3D and 2D opal and inverse opal cellulose photonic crystal films (CPCF) by embedding 3D or 2D polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) colloidal arrays into carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), respectively. The morphology and optical performance of CPCFs were characterized by SEM, diffraction spectra, Debye rings, and structural color. The brilliant structural colors of CPCFs are visible to the eye in the entire visible spectrum, and can be tuned by changing the particle diameters or the pore sizes. Attributed to decreased particle spacing and lower ave

A multiwavelength, high bandwidth (1 GHz) frequency-domain photon migration (FDPM) instrument has been developed for quantitative, non-invasive measurements of tissue optical and physiological properties. The instrument produces 300 kHz to 1 GHz photon density waves (PDWs) in optically turbid media using a network analyser, an avalanche photodiode detector and four amplitude-modulated diode lasers (674 nm, 811 nm, 849 nm, and 956 nm). The frequency of PDW phase and amplitude is measured and compared to analytically derived model functions in order to calculate absorption, mu a, and reduced sca
