Management of patients with age-related cataracts: a survey of Oklahoma optometrists.

Many advances have been made in recent years in the treatment of patients with cataracts, particularly in the area of aphakic vision correction. In this study, 60 optometrists were surveyed about their role in the management of patients who have cataracts significantly affecting vision. It was found that over 90% of the optometrists surveyed attempted to educate their patients about cataracts, cataract surgery, and alternatives for aphakic vision correction. However, these optometrists felt least knowledgeable about intraocular lens implants, the most common form of aphakic vision correction u

Patient experiences of laser and surgical lid procedures performed by optometrists.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Optometrists are authorised to perform YAG capsulotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, and laser peripheral iridotomy in various jurisdictions within the United States. Modernised scope of practice evolved in response to the ageing population, ophthalmology workforce shortage and maldistribution, and the need for increased access to eye care. However, there is a paucity of literature on the experiences of patients who have had laser and surgical procedures performed by optometrists. BACKGROUND: This study explores the experiences of patients who underwent laser and surgi

Prescribing patterns of myopia control contact lenses among optometrists in Ireland.

PURPOSE: This retrospective analysis of electronic medical record (EMR) data investigated the prescribing patterns of soft myopia control contact lens (MCCL) treatments since their introduction in Ireland in 2017. METHODS: Anonymised EMR data were sourced from 33 optometry practices in Ireland from 2017 to 2021 to determine the number of practices prescribing MCCLs to myopic children 5-18 years old. In MCCL-prescribing practices, the proportion of contact lens wearing children fitted with MCCLs and the proportion of progressive (≤-0.25 D/year) myopic children fitted with MCCLs were determined

A survey of prescribing philosophy in childhood hyperopia among optometrists in Ghana.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hyperopia is a common refractive error in young children and has the potential to affect their visual, educational and general development. Management of childhood hyperopia presents significant intra-and inter-professional differences partly because evidence-based guidelines to inform when and how to prescribe for hyperopia are insufficient. PURPOSE: This study investigated the prescribing philosophy in childhood hyperopia among optometrists in Ghana and the challenges faced in managing childhood hyperopia. METHODS: An online questionnaire was distributed to optometrists

Utility of optometrist referrals for glaucoma evaluation in a young adult population.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Few studies have examined the utility of glaucoma referrals among young adults aged 18-40 years, as glaucoma is primarily a disease of the elderly. There are sparse data about prevalence of myopia, which may confound glaucoma diagnosis in this population. BACKGROUND: To examine the prevalence and characteristics of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients and suspects among young adults aged 18-39 years referred by optometry for in-office evaluation by glaucoma specialists. METHODS: Eligible participants who were referred for glaucoma evaluation between 1 January 2015

Assessing the role of optometrists in the control of systemic hypertension in Saudi Arabia.

The low level of awareness, treatment, and control of systemic hypertension is a global problem, but it is much more serious in Saudi Arabia. This study examines the contribution made by Saudi optometrists in detection and management of patients with systemic hypertension. We surveyed a sample of 250 optometrists practicing in Saudi Arabia to evaluate the level of knowledge and awareness of their role in combating systemic hypertension. A 48.4% response rate was obtained from practicing optometrists. Of those responding, optometrists were very positive towards the use of blood pressure (BP) mo

On the frontline: what an optometrist needs to know about myasthenia gravis.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease that affects the voluntary skeletal muscles. It is characterized by transient weakness of the muscles that improves with rest. Muscle weakness involving the eyes can produce signs or symptoms of diplopia, blurred vision, ptosis, and ophthalmoplegia. Ptosis is defined as an abnormal eyelid "drooping" beyond the normal 1 to 2 mm of the upper limbus of the cornea. Hence, most patients with MG have ophthalmic manifestations. Among all patients with MG, up to half will have exclusively ocular symptoms. In these cases, the condition is refe

Optometrists' examination and referral practices for patients presenting with flashes and floaters.

INTRODUCTION: Patients experiencing flashes and floaters commonly present to their optometrist. Some of these patients may have significant pathology, yet there is a great deal of variability with regard to examination technique and referral practice. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was undertaken to determine the current management of patients presenting to their optometrist with flashes and floaters. All practising community optometrists within Southern Derbyshire received a questionnaire and 74 (56.9%) completed replies were received. RESULTS: Optometrists estimated that an average of 14

Onchocerciasis and other eye problems in developing countries: a challenge for optometrists.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis, also known as River Blindness, affects about 18 million people around the world, resulting in severe visual impairment or blindness for approximately 2 million. METHODS: The disease is transmitted through the bite of a tiny black fly, which breeds in fast moving rivers and streams. The fly injects immature forms of the parasite worm, Onchocerca volvulus, whose microfilariae migrate to superficial tissues, and may invade any part of the eye. In the eye, living microfilariae may be found in any ocular structure, however, sclerosing keratitis, a severe corneal involve

An Insight into Knowledge, Perspective, and Practices of Indian Optometrists towards Childhood Myopia.

The current understanding of clinical approaches and barriers in managing childhood myopia among Indian optometrists is limited. This research underscores the necessity and relevance of evidence-based practice guidelines by exploring their knowledge, attitude, and practice towards childhood myopia. A self-administered internet-based 26-item survey was circulated online among practicing optometrists in India. The questions assessed the demographics, knowledge, self-reported clinical practice behavior, barriers, source of information guiding their management, and extent of adult caregiver engage
