The Croatian Primary Sjögren's Disease Oral Health Study: Oral Status and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life.

To determine salivary flow rate, oral and periodontal status, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), objective and subjective indexes, and serum antibody reactivity in patients with primary Sjögren's disease (pSD). Thirty-one patients with pSD and 31 control subjects participated in this cross-sectional, single-center study. The unstimulated whole salivary flow rate (UWSFR) and stimulated whole salivary flow rate (SWSFR), salivary pH, DMFT index (DMFT = D-decayed, M-missing, F-filled tooth), periodontal pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), interincisal distance, OHRQoL,

Does oral health goal setting during medical visits improve parents' oral health behaviors?

OBJECTIVES: The Rocky Mountain Network for Oral Health (RoMoNOH) promotes the delivery of preventive oral health services (POHS) to children receiving care at community health centers (CHCs) in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. One POHS is oral health goal setting (OHGS). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of OHGS during medical visits on parent/caregiver-reported oral health behaviors (OHBs). METHODS: The RoMoNOH implementation team trained CHC healthcare providers in POHS, including caries risk assessment, oral health education, fluoride varnish application, dental referrals, an

Exploring the Link Between Maternal Oral Health Literacy and Child Oral Health Behaviours.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Caregiver's oral health literacy (OHL) has a multidimensional impact on child oral health outcomes. In infants and toddlers, oral health behaviours (OHB) play a crucial role in the development of early childhood caries and could be related to the caregiver's OHL. A simple OHL assessment may help identify children at risk of caries. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal OHL and the child OHBs during the first 2 years of life. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 398 mothers of children aged 6 to 24 months. Maternal OHL was assess

Clinical Oral Health Recommended Care and Oral Health Self-Report, NHANES, 2013-2014.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the concordance of self-reported responses to oral health questions versus clinically evaluated recommended need for oral healthcare by calibrated dentists to determine usefulness of the questions for epidemiological studies. We additionally examined other factors associated with concordant self-reports versus clinical evaluations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used a cross-sectional study design with 4,205 participants, ages 30 years and above, who had complete oral health self-perception data and dental referral data in the NHANES 2013-14. Oral inflammatory load: Neutrophils as oral health biomarkers.

Periodontal diseases present a significant challenge to our healthcare system in terms of morbidity from the disease itself as well as their putative and deleterious effects on systemic health. The current method of diagnosing periodontal disease utilizes clinical criteria solely. These are imprecise and are somewhat invasive. There is thus significant benefit to creating a non-invasive test as a method of screening for and monitoring of periodontal diseases, and, in particular, chronic periodontitis. Oral polymorphonuclear neutrophil (oPMN) counts have been found to correlate with extent of o

The Oral Microbiome: A Key Determinant of Oral Health.

As the second largest reservoir of human microbes, the oral cavity is colonized by millions of tiny creatures collectively named as oral microbiome. Species detected in human mouth are diverse, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. Active bidirectional interaction exists between the oral microbiome and the host. Stresses from hosts shape the composition, distribution pattern, and the community behaviors of the oral microbiome, while any changes occurring on the oral microbiome may disrupt its symbiosis relationship with the host and ultimately lead to oral and systemic diseases tha

Oral health as a predictive factor for oral mucositis.

ObjectivesOral mucositis is a complication frequently associated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, decreasing a patient's quality of life and increasing the occurrence of opportunistic infections. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and severity of oral mucositis and to assess the correlation of this disease with the oral health of an individual at the time of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.MethodsBefore transplantation, patients' oral health and inflammatory conditions were determined using the gingival index and the plaque index, which are based on g

Maternal knowledge and oral health status in relation to the oral health status of children.

The influence of parental oral health literacy on children's oral health: a scoping review.

The aim of this review was to evaluate the association between parental oral health literacy and children's oral health outcomes. A comprehensive search was conducted across four electronic databases to identify articles that were published up to October 2023. The articles that met our predetermined criteria were then screened and assessed for eligibility. Updated Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework was followed. After identifying 2964 references, duplicates were removed, leaving 1992 titles. Following the screening of article titles and abstracts, 19 full-text articles underwent a

The military oral health care system as a model for eliminating disparities in oral health.

BACKGROUND: Healthy People (HP) 2010 is a national health promotion and disease prevention initiative of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The HP 2010 report highlighted a range of racial/ethnic disparities in dental health. A substantial portion of these disparities appear to be explained by differences in access to care. Members of the U.S. military have universal access to care that also has a compulsory component. The authors conducted a study to investigate the extent to which disparities in progress toward achievement of HP 2010 objectives were lower among the military po

The World Oral Health Report 2003: continuous improvement of oral health in the 21st century--the approach of the WHO Global Oral Health Programme.

Chronic diseases and injuries are the leading health problems in all but a few parts of the world. The rapidly changing disease patterns throughout the world are closely linked to changing lifestyles, which include diets rich in sugars, widespread use of tobacco, and increased consumption of alcohol. In addition to socio-environmental determinants, oral disease is highly related to these lifestyle factors, which are risks to most chronic diseases as well as protective factors such as appropriate exposure to fluoride and good oral hygiene. Oral diseases qualify as major public health problems o

Integrating oral health screening into general practice: validation study of the Oral Health Screener.

Oral health in older adults is often poor, with a high prevalence of caries, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. As dental care utilization declines with age, while contact with general practitioners (GPs) increases, GPs could play an important role in preventive oral care, by detecting oral care needs and initiating preventive actions. To compare oral health assessment outcomes between GP trainees (GPTs) and dentists (benchmark), 58 adults aged 65 years or older were independently assessed by GPTs and dentists on the same day using the nine-item Oral Health Screener (OHS), covering both self

The relationship between maternal gingival health status and low birth weight or preterm delivery is controversial. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between maternal oral knowledge and the level of oral health during pregnancy with the risk of obstetric complications and breastfeeding. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted after an oral health educational intervention in a consecutive sample of 97 pregnant women.
