Background In order to maintain the surgery site's shape, functionality, and aesthetics, closure of the wound is essential for intra-oral and general surgical procedures. Wound closure speeds up healing by reducing the buildup of inflammatory cells. For a wound to heal well, the incision must be precise, the tissue must be handled delicately, the wound must be precisely repositioned, and the closure material must have optimum functional properties and be sterile. Aim This study aims to conduct a clinical comparison of the effectiveness of silk suture versus isoamyl 2-cyanoacrylate (IAC) for in

BACKGROUND: There is a blooming trend in the application of robotic surgery in oral and maxillofacial care, and different studies had evaluated the quality of life (QoL) outcomes among patients who underwent robotic surgery in the oral and maxillofacial region. However, empirical evidence on the QoL outcomes from these procedures is yet to be mapped. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the available scientific evidence and gaps concerning the QoL outcomes of patients treated with robotic surgery in the oral and maxillofacial region.
METHODS: This study adopted a scoping review design,

Advances in technology and specialized instrumentation allow surgeons to study, refine, and modify minimally invasive surgery (MIS) to replace standard operations. This has occurred across many surgical specialties. The benefits of MIS include less swelling, less pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to daily activities. Oral and maxillofacial endoscopic techniques are used for access to the ramus condyle unit, maxillary sinus, zygoma, orbit, temporomandibular joint, and salivary ductal system. Although endoscopic techniques are also used in facial cosmetic surgery, this discussion fo

OBJECTIVES: The reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial defects poses considerable challenges due to their complex nature. Surgeons often face difficulties in selecting the most appropriate flap for such repairs. The procedure involving vascularized free flaps typically requires prolonged procedural times and places significant demands on surgical teams. In specific cases, facial artery-based flaps serve as an effective alternative. This article discusses the current utilization and future prospects of facial artery-based flaps in the reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial defects.

Surgical procedures in the oral cavity and maxillofacial complex are diverse and involve multiple tissues unique to this region. These procedures are used to remove pathology and infection, restore function, optimize occlusal relationships, prosthetically replace teeth and temporomandibular joints, improve esthetics, and increase upper respiratory tract dimensions. Procedures in the oral cavity are often complicated by infection stemming from the naturally occurring oral flora, but can also be complicated iatrogenically. This article explores the more commonly encountered surgical procedures t

Methods of exposing impacted teeth in order to bring them into the line of the arch include gingivectomy, the apically repositioned flap and closed eruption techniques. These procedures aim to facilitate the eruption of the impacted tooth with a minimum of disruption or damage to the tooth itself or adjacent structures. The aim of this paper is to discuss the various surgical methods of exposing impacted teeth and to help to identify where the use of the apically repositioned flap is indicated. Clinical examples are presented and a surgical method for carrying out this procedure recommended.

Oral biopsies are common diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgical (OMFS) outpatient departments. The chalazion clamp is similar to a pair of forceps. One extension has a flat, solid, oval plate, the other, a ring-like structure that is used to clamp and retract soft tissues. We highlight the benefits of using this simple, widely-available tool during oral biopsies. We find that the clamp increases effectiveness and efficiency for the clinician and assistant. We recommend its use in daily OMFS practice.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is an insidious chronic progressive disease of the oral cavity which is considered as a precancerous condition. The suggested aetiological factor is the practice of certain customs/habits of the inhabitants of South East Asia. As the disease progresses, the oral mucosa becomes stiff due to the formation of fibrotic bands in the cheek, ultimately leading to reduced mouth opening and trismus. The early form of the disease can be treated by medicinal means, however, advance form needs surgical excision of the fibrotic tissue bands. The defect created due to the exci

A full-thickness fistula of the hard palate can be closed by various methods. Recurrences are seen many times and more stable methods of closure have been researched. The authors attempted to close a palatal fistula by adhering to the main rule of reconstruction as stated by Gillies, "replace the lost tissues in kind." They used a buccinator musculomucosal transposition flap for the nasal lining, a cranial bone graft for the palatal bone, and a local mucoperiosteal transposition flap for the oral closure. The flaps and bone adapted well to the fistula. There were no recurrences during 12 month
