Mobilizing resilience and recovery in response to adverse childhood experiences (ACE): a Restorative Integral Support (RIS) case study.

The Restorative Integral Support (RIS) model is a comprehensive, whole person approach to addressing adversity and trauma. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Kaiser Permanente reveals a relationship between childhood trauma and adult health and social problems. The current empirical case study presents the Committee on the Shelterless (COTS), in Petaluma, CA, as an example of one social service agency employing RIS to break cycles of homelessness. By applying RIS, research-based programming is offered within a culture of recover

Digital transformation during a pandemic: Stretching the organizational elasticity.

How can firms turn their COVID-19 pandemic-driven digitalization efforts into sustainable digital transformation? Firms accelerated their digitalization efforts during the global pandemic to an emergency speed. This speed of implementation of digital technologies left organizations with little time to adapt their structures, processes, and culture to the new environment. We argue that firms currently remain in a stretched operations mode that will either bounce back to normal after the pandemic or ultimately lead to organizational failure. Seven in-depth case studies based on 11 interviews of

Gambling revenues as a public administration issue: electronic gaming machines in Victoria.

Gambling activities and the revenues derived have been seen as a way to increase economic development in deprived areas. There are also, however, concerns about the effects of gambling in general and electronic gaming machines (EGMs) in particular, on the resources available to the localities in which they are situated. This paper focuses on the factors that determine the extent and spending of community benefit-related EGM-generated resources within Victoria, Australia, focusing in particular on the relationships between EGM activity and socio-economic and social capital indicators, and how t

The art of designing markets.

Traditionally, markets have been viewed as simply the confluence of supply and demand. But to function properly, they must be able to attract a sufficient number of buyers and sellers, induce participants to make their preferences clear, and overcome congestion by providing both enough time to make choices and a speedy means of registering them. Solutions to these challenges are the province of market design--a blend of game theory and experimental economics. Roth, a professor of both business and economics at Harvard, is a leading market designer. He and his colleagues have rescued failing ma

Logistics modelling: improving resource management and public information strategies in Florida.

One of the most time-sensitive and logistically-challenging emergency response operations today is to provide mass prophylaxis to every man, woman and child in a community within 48 hours of a bioterrorism attack. To meet this challenge, federal, state and local public health departments in the USA have joined forces to develop, test and execute large-scale bioterrorism response plans. This preparedness and response effort is funded through the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Cities Readiness Initiative, a programme dedicated to providing oral antibiotics to an entire populatio

How do employees and managers perceive depression: a worksite case study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of depression in the workplace is significant. If managers and employees understood depression better they could assist those with depression to achieve optimal work performance. METHOD: The case study was a medium-sized, privately owned forest products company located in western Canada. Individual interviews were used to explore the views of employees and managers about depression and its impact on work performance. FINDINGS: Suggest that how one perceives workplace support for depression is influenced by the interaction of the following factors: a) knowledge and unde

Leadership and the psychology of turnarounds.

Turnaround champions--those leaders who manage to bring distressed organizations back from the brink of failure--are often acclaimed for their canny financial and strategic decision making. But having studied their work closely, Harvard Business School's Rosabeth Moss Kanter emphasizes another aspect of their achievement. These leaders reverse the cycle of corporate decline through deliberate interventions that increase the level of communication, collaboration, and respect among their managers. Ailing companies descend into what Kanter calls a "death spiral," which typically works this way: A

Georgia hospital hit by F3 tornado--all patients evacuated through the ED.

When an F3 tornado severely damaged a hospital in Americus, GA, all patients had to be evacuated through the emergency department. Fifty-three patients were evacuated by area ambulances and a school bus to other hospitals in the region. The hospital advises others to have an internal evacuation plan as well as two-way radios, a megaphone to direct staff and volunteers, and additional security. A temporary treatment area was set up at a local church.

Application of the industrial hygiene hierarchy of controls to prioritize and promote safer methods of pest control: a case study.

In 2005, the California Department of Public Health, Occupational Health Branch (OHB) investigated an incident of pesticide exposure and identified 27 vineyard workers who became ill due to drift of cyfluthrin, a pesticide being applied to a neighboring orange field to control katydids. Another pest, citrus thrips, was also present in the field. We investigated safer alternatives for katydid and thrips control to prevent illness due to pesticide exposure and used the industrial hygiene hierarchy of controls to prioritize the control methods. OHB evaluated factors that contributed to pesticide

Paddling upstream: a contextual analysis of implementation of a workplace ergonomic policy at a large newspaper.

Efforts to implement workplace ergonomic programs aimed at reducing the burden of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) have to address multiple physical and psychosocial aspects of work environments yet often contextual factors limit their success. We describe the processes involved in an ergonomic program to reduce neck and upper limb WMSDs at a large Canadian newspaper. Using qualitative data collection and analysis methods, we illustrate the impact of key contextual characteristics of: (1) the program (management commitment, union involvement, experience and skill of program leader

ACTIVE involvement in alcohol care: a community case study in coproduction.

This is a descriptive case study of a public engagement group of people who have used alcohol care services. Involvement of people with lived and living experience is increasingly recognized as essential in health and social care policy. However, in alcohol care services, such involvement remains underdeveloped and sometimes tokenistic. This community case study outlines the establishment, development, and impact of the ACTIVE (Alcohol Care Team InVolvement and Engagement) group-a pioneering public and patient involvement and engagement (PPIE) initiative in alcohol care services across Merseys

Design organization and clinical processes around patient characteristics: Evidence from a multiple case study of Hemophilia.

Background: There is growing evidence of the relevance of designing organization of care around patient characteristics; this is especially true in the case of complex chronic diseases.Purpose: The goal of the paper - that focuses on the analysis of the clinical condition hemophilia in three different centers - is to address two different research questions:1. How can we define, within the same clinical condition, different patient profiles homogeneous in terms of intensity of service required (e.g. number of visits or diagnostics)? 2. What are the conditions to re-organize care around these p

What only the CEO can do.

The author combines his nine years' experience as the CEO of Procter & Gamble with the last writings of the management scholar Peter Drucker to answer the question "What is the work of the CEO?" The chief executive, Lafley says, is held singularly accountable for the performance and results of the company--according not just to its own goals but also to those of diverse and often competing external stakeholders. In other words, he or she is responsible for linking the outside to the inside--a job that consists of four fundamental tasks. DEFINING THE MEANINGFUL OUTSIDE: At P&G this means emphas

Adopting and adapting foreign innovations in health service delivery: a case study in elderly care in Suzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: One of the shared challenges faced by societies worldwide is aging, which started in high-income countries and has gradually been prevalent in middle- and low-income countries. International exchange of innovations has been encouraged to address global challenges. However, transferring innovations in service delivery across different health systems has been found challenging and influenced by various factors. There remains a shortage of empirical studies that focus on how the adoption and adaption of innovations originating from high-income Western countries in low- and middle-inco

Enhancing private sector engagement: Louisiana's business emergency operations centre.

Public sector emergency management is more effective when it coordinates its efforts with private sector companies that can provide useful capabilities faster, cheaper and better than government agencies. A business emergency operations centre (EOC) provides a space for private sector and non-governmental organisations to gather together in support of government efforts. This paper reviews business-related EOC practices in multiple US states and details the development of a new business EOC by the State of Louisiana, including lessons learned in response to the May 2010 oil spill.

Reducing medical errors through barcoding at the point of care.

Medical errors are a major concern in health care today. Errors in point-of-care testing (POCT) are particularly problematic because the test is conducted by clinical operators at the site of patient care and immediate medical action is taken on the results prior to review by the laboratory. The Performance Improvement Program at Baystate Health System, Springfield, Massachusetts, noted a number of identification errors occurring with glucose and blood gas POCT devices. Incorrect patient account numbers that were attached to POCT results prevented the results from being transmitted to the pati

Professional groups driving change toward patient-centred care: interprofessional working in stroke rehabilitation in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Patient-centred care based on needs has been gaining momentum in health policy and the workforce. This creates new demand for interprofessional teams and redefining roles and tasks of professionals, yet little is known on how to implement new health policies more effectively. Our aim was to analyse the role and capacity of health professions in driving organisational change in interprofessional working and patient-centred care. METHODS: A case study of the introduction of interprofessional, early discharge teams in stroke rehabilitation in Denmark was conducted with focus on day-t

Improving the culture of patient safety through the Magnet® journey.

This article outlines how one academic medical center's nursing service has developed programs to improve patient safety and quality outcomes through the use of the Magnet Re-Designation Accreditation Process(R) and a shared governance model. Successful programs have been implemented across the continuum of care. These programs include educational initiatives that increased both the number of nurses with BSN degrees and specialty certifications and also the number of patient-focused initiatives, such as a reduction in central line infection rates, an increase in hand-washing compliance, and a

A Policy for the Delivery of Essential Medicines to Vulnerable Population in Argentina: A Case Study of the REMEDIAR Program.

The REMEDIAR Program, established during Argentina's 2001-2002 crisis, provides free essential medicines to the uninsured population through direct delivery to more than 8,000 primary healthcare centers. Over two decades, the program has alternated between two financing models: international concessional loans from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and national treasury funding. Using the Nexus Working Group framework linking public financial management to supply chain performance, this longitudinal single-case study (2002-2024) examines how each financing model shaped the program's fu
