Acute pancreatitis due to pancreatic exocrine over-secretion induced by organophosphate poisoning has been previously reported but parotid gland involvement has not. This paper describes a case of acute organophosphate-induced parotitis in a patient with pre-existing sialolithiasis. The patient developed bilateral facial swelling in the pre-auricular area extending to the angle of the jaw and also developed elevated serum amylase on the second day of the poisoning. Serum lipase remained normal. Autopsy confirmed parotid gland inflammation and pre-existing ductal lithiasis. This case illustrate

Organophosphates are frequently used as insecticides in agricultural areas, therefore they may pose a risk for accidental exposure by dermal contact or through inhalation. We present the cases of eight young men, who worked unprotected and inexperienced with organophosphates. They were exposed dermally and developed mainly gastrointestinal symptoms and also diaphoresis, hypersalivation, blurred vision and miosis. One patient developed severe weakness, fasciculations, disorientation and sleepiness. All had low levels of plasma acetylcholinesterase. All were admitted to the hospital and received

Huntington's disease (HDs) is a fatal, autosomal dominant, and hereditary neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disturbances. HD is well linked to mutation in the HTT gene, which leads to an abnormal expansion of trinucleotide CAG repeats, resulting in the production of the mHTT protein and responsible for abnormally long poly-Q tract. These abnormal proteins disrupt cellular processes, including neuroinflammation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction, ultimately leading to selective neuronal lo

We describe a case of multiple Zargar grade IIA ulcerations of the oral mucosa with no systemic toxicity in a patient after ingestion of an organophosphate. Serial debridement, control of superadded infections, and active physiotherapy were the mainstay of the treatment plan. We know of no other reported cases of poisoning by organophosphates that caused burns of the oral mucosa and no systemic toxicity.

Methods for measurements and the potential for occupational exposure to organophosphates (OPs) originating from turbine and hydraulic oils among flying personnel in the aviation industry are described. Different sampling methods were applied, including active within-day methods for OPs and VOCs, newly developed passive long-term sample methods (deposition of OPs to wipe surface areas and to activated charcoal cloths), and measurements of OPs in high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) recirculation filters (n = 6). In total, 95 and 72 within-day OP and VOC samples, respectively, have been collec

Escalating pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors jeopardizes vector control, necessitating the use of alternative insecticides such as pirimiphos-methyl (organophosphate) for indoor residual spraying (IRS). Tracking the spread of resistance and elucidating its molecular basis are essential for effective resistance management against these insecticides. This study monitored resistance to two organophosphates, malathion (MA) and pirimiphos methyl (PM), in three malaria vectors (Anopheles gambiae s.s., An. coluzzii, and An. funestus s.s.) across Cameroon and explored related resistance mechani

This study develops a photoelectrochemical solution-gated graphene field-effect transistor (PEC-SGGT) for ultrasensitive organophosphates (OPs) detection, merging optoelectronic modulation with enzymatic signal amplification. The sensor employs a hybrid system of cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), using acetylthiocholine (ATCh) as the substrate. Under light, CdS QDs generate electron-hole pairs, while AChE hydrolyzes ATCh into thiocholine (TCh), which enhances charge separation and amplifies photocurrent. OPs-induced inhibition of AChE reduces TCh productio

Organophosphates (OP), commonly used in agriculture and as chemical warfare agents, pose significant environmental risks, necessitating real-time, low-cost OP detection methods. In particular, liquid-phase OP sensing with minimal sample volumes is crucial. While several methods allow rapid detection of low concentrations of OP vapors, they are effective only in the short term, while vapors are still being produced. Many OP compounds are semi-volatile, leading to the contamination of water, soil, and surfaces, posing a risk of secondary, long-term exposure. Detecting this contamination requires

This structured critical narrative review evaluates the bacterial transformation of six selected organophosphate pesticides-chlorpyrifos, methyl parathion, parathion, diazinon, malathion, and phosalone-in relation to chemical, mechanistic, and environmental evidence. Peer-reviewed literature was searched in Scopus and PubMed for the period from 1 January 2020 to 26 August 2026 and was supplemented by backward-reference screening and forward citation tracking of foundational studies. Evidence was assessed across eight domains spanning association, tolerance, controlled dissipation, product-reso

Reversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors can protect against the lethal effects of irreversible organophosphorus AChE inhibitors (OPCs), when administered before OPC exposure. We have assessed in vivo the mortality-reducing efficacy of a group of known AChE inhibitors, when given in equitoxic dosage before exposure to the OPC paraoxon. Protection was quantified in rats by determining the relative risk (RR) of death. Best in vivo protection from paraoxon-induced mortality was observed after prophylactic administration of physostigmine (RR = 0.30) or the oxime K-27 (RR = 0.34); both tre

Background. Organophosphates are chemicals that lead to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing muscarinic symptoms such as salivation and nicotinic manifestations like muscle weakness and hypertension and rarely leading to basal ganglia impairment, manifesting as extrapyramidal symptoms. Literature reported that the use of amantadine, an amine that has both antiviral and dopaminergic activities, improves extrapyramidal manifestations. Most of the studies exploring the effect of amantadine were conducted on adults and there are extremely limited data in regards to this topic in Saudi Arabia

Understanding the mechanism of action of organophosphates (OP)/nerve agents -- irreversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) inhibition at the cholinergic synapses followed by metabolic dysbalance of the organism -- two therapeutic principles for antidotal treatment are derived. The main drugs are anticholinergics that antagonize the effects of accumulated acetylcholine at the cholinergic synapses and cholinesterase reactivators (oximes) reactivating inhibited AChE. Anticonvulsants such as diazepam are also used to treat convulsions. Though there are experimental data on a good therapeu

Altered mental status is a common emergency department presentation. It has a broad differential and can be particularly challenging when the patient is unable to give a history and collateral information is not immediately available. The authors present a case of altered mental status initially brought in as a stroke alert but later discovered to be intentional organophosphate ingestion. Although organophosphate poisoning is relatively rare in the United States, it should be considered in patients with altered mental status with miosis who are unresponsive to naloxone, especially in the setti

This study analysed the clinical patterns and outcomes of elderly patients with organophosphate intoxication. A total of 71 elderly patients with organophosphate poisoning were seen between 2008 and 2017. Patients were stratified into two subgroups: survivors (n = 57) or nonsurvivors (n = 14). Chlorpyrifos accounted for 33.8% of the cases, followed by methamidophos (12.7%) and mevinphos (11.3%). Mood, adjustment and psychotic disorder were noted in 39.4%, 33.8% and 2.8% of patients, respectively. All patients were treated with atropine and pralidoxime therapies. Acute cholinergic crisis develo

The term organophosphate (OP) refers to a diverse group of chemicals that are found in hundreds of products worldwide. As pesticides, their most common use, OPs are clearly beneficial for agricultural productivity and the control of deadly vector-borne illnesses. However, as a consequence of their widespread use, OPs are now among the most common synthetic chemicals detected in the environment as well as in animal and human tissues. This is an increasing environmental concern because many OPs are highly toxic and both accidental and intentional exposures to OPs resulting in deleterious health

In cases of organophosphate poisoning, patients are treated with a combination of antidotes. In addition to these poison-directed antidotes, patients may require extra oxygen and artificial ventilation; other modalities may also be needed due to the wide range of toxic effects. Anisodamine is a belladonna alkaloid, and like other drugs from this family is non subtype-selective muscarinic, and a nicotinic cholinoceptor antagonist, which has been employed in traditional Chinese medicine. As a muscarinic antagonist, it displays similar pharmacological effects to atropine and scopolamine. However,
