Glyphosate acetylation as a specific trait of Achromobacter sp. Kg 16 physiology.

The growth parameters of Achromobacter sp. Kg 16 (VKM B-2534 D), such as biomass and maximum specific growth rate, depended only on the source of phosphorus in the medium, but not on the carbon source or the presence of growth factors. With glyphosate as a sole phosphorus source, they were still 40-50 % lower than in media supplemented with orthophosphate or other organophosphonate-methylphosphonic acid. At the first time process of glyphosate acetylation and accumulation of acetylglyphosate in culture medium were revealed in this strain. Acetylglyphosate isolated from cultural liquid was iden

Unveiling the Structural Effects in Hybrid Copper Phosphonate Frameworks for Selective Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Reaction.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction holds tremendous promise for transforming carbon dioxide into several value-added energy feedstocks and utilizing renewable energy sources. Herein, we have developed two novel copper-based organophosphonates for selective electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CH3OH conversion. The two-dimensional layer structure of Cu3[(Hhedp)2(C4H4N2)].2H2O (I) and the three-dimensional Cu3[(H3hedp)2(C4H4N2)4(SO4)].2H2O (II) have been isolated as single crystals via a hydrothermal strategy. Compound I consists of Cu2+ oxidation states exclusively, while compound II has Cu1+ oxida

Microbial transformations in phosphonate biosynthesis and catabolism, and their importance in nutrient cycling.

Phosphorus cycling in the biosphere has traditionally been thought to involve almost exclusively transformations of the element in its pentavalent oxidation state. Recent evidence, however, suggests that a significant fraction of environmental phosphorus may exist in a more reduced form. Most abundant of these reduced phosphorus compounds are the phosphonates, with their direct carbon-phosphorus bonds, and striking progress has recently been made in elucidating the biochemistry of microbial phosphonate transformations. These advances are now presented in the context of their contribution to ou

Subunit Interactions within the Carbon-Phosphorus Lyase Complex from Escherichia coli.

Phosphonates are a large class of organophosphorus compounds with a characteristic carbon-phosphorus bond. The genes responsible for phosphonate utilization in Gram-negative bacteria are arranged in an operon of 14 genes. The carbon-phosphorus lyase complex, encoded by the genes phnGHIJKLM, catalyzes the cleavage of the stable carbon-phosphorus bond of organophosphonates to the corresponding hydrocarbon and inorganic phosphate. Recently, complexes of this enzyme containing five subunits (PhnG-H-I-J-K), four subunits (PhnG-H-I-J), and two subunits (PhnG-I) were purified after expression in Esch

Identification and Prioritization of Emerging Organophosphorus Compounds Beyond Organophosphate Esters in Chinese Estuarine Waters.

Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) pose potential hazards to human health and aquatic ecosystems. However, limited knowledge of emerging OPCs beyond organophosphate esters (OPEs) hinders a thorough understanding of the environmental occurrence and exposure risks. Through target, suspect, and nontarget screening analysis, 64 OPCs were successfully identified in Chinese estuarine waters, including 24 known OPEs and 40 emerging analogues (i.e., quaternary phosphonium, phosphine oxide, organophosphonate, and organothiophosphate esters). Domestic wastewater and agricultural and industrial discharges

Towards single molecule biosensors using super-resolution fluorescence microscopy.

Conventional immunosensors require many binding events to give a single transducer output which represents the concentration of the analyte in the sample. Because of the requirements to selectively detect species in complex samples, immunosensing interfaces must allow immobilisation of antibodies while repelling nonspecific adsorption of other species. These requirements lead to quite sophisticated interfacial design, often with molecular level control, but we have no tools to characterise how well these interfaces work at the molecular level. The work reported herein is an initial feasibility

Nanogold Array Sensors Leveraging Interaction-Sensitive UV Shifts for Portable Speciation of Phosphorus in Water.

The sensitive and cost-effective identification of diverse phosphorus species, particularly organophosphorus compounds, is crucial for advanced wastewater treatment. Herein, we developed a colorimetric sensor array based on gold nanoparticles (nano-Au) that utilizes UV-vis spectral shifts induced by interactions with phosphorus species. Four molecular modifiers, i.e., cysteamine (CS), neodymium (Nd), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and tributylhexadecylphosphonium bromide (THPB), were strategically incorporated into the nano-Au receptors to generate distinct response patterns via coordi

Communication between the active sites and dimer interface of a herpesvirus protease revealed by a transition-state inhibitor.

Structurally diverse organophosphonate inhibitors targeting the active site of the enzyme were used to investigate the relationship of the active site and the dimer interface of wild-type protease in solution. Positional scanning synthetic combinatorial libraries revealed Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus protease to be highly specific, even at sites distal to the peptide bond undergoing hydrolysis. Specificity results were used to synthesize a hexapeptide diphenylphosphonate inhibitor of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus protease. The transition state analog inhibitors covalently

Optimized Procedure for Determining the Adsorption of Phosphonates onto Granular Ferric Hydroxide using a Miniaturized Phosphorus Determination Method.

This paper introduces a procedure to investigate the adsorption of phosphonates onto iron-containing filter materials, particularly granular ferric hydroxide (GFH), with little effort and high reliability. The phosphonate, e.g., nitrilotrimethylphosphonic acid (NTMP), is brought into contact with the GFH in a rotator in a solution buffered by an organic acid (e.g., acetic acid) or Good buffer (e.g., 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid) [MES] and N-cyclohexyl-2-hydroxyl-3-aminopropanesulfonic acid [CAPSO]) in a concentration of 10 mM for a specific time in 50 mL centrifuge tubes. Subsequently,

Two distinct alcohol dehydrogenase classes mediate bacterial 2-hydroxyethylphosphonate catabolism.

Phosphonates are molecules containing a direct carbon-phosphorus bond. In nature, these compounds are produced by a variety of organisms, and many environmental microbes are able to degrade specific phosphonates and feed on them. This work focuses on 2-hydroxyethylphosphonate (HEP)-a natural compound that is found frequently in the environment, but whose microbial catabolism has remained poorly characterized. Starting from genomic analyses, we report here that specific pathways for HEP degradation in bacteria do exist and rely on the oxidation of HEP into the activated compound phosphonoacetal

Electrochemical selenium-π-acid promoted hydration of alkynyl phosphonates.

An unprecedented electrochemical selenium-π-acid promoted hydration of internal alkynes bearing a phosphonate auxiliary was described. Thus, valuable (hetero)aryl and alkyl ketones could be accessed under mild, metal- and external oxidant-free conditions. This protocol features high atom-economy, good chemo- and regio-selectivity, excellent functional group tolerance and easily transformable products. Control experiments demonstrate that phosphonate assistance is essential for this transformation.

ZnCl2-mediated stereo- and chemoselective synthesis of vinylphosphonates.

A highly chemo- and stereoselective synthesis of diethyl (E)-2-(alkylidene)-2-phosphonoacetonitriles via the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of carbonyl compounds with diethyl cyanomethylphosphonate in the presence of zinc chloride has been achieved. By the presented method, various E-isomers of arylmethylidene phosphonates rather than Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination products were obtained in good to excellent yields. Their E configurations were determined by X-ray diffraction and NMR analyses. In addition, DFT calculations provided insights into the chemo- and stereoselectivity of the r

The use of phosphonates in agriculture. Chemical, biological properties and legislative issues.

The Phosphorus (III) derivatives, named Phosphonates, include congeners with properties as fungicides that are effective in controlling Oomycetes. Examples are organic compounds like Fosetyl-Al [Aluminium tris-(ethylphosphonate)] and salts formed with the anion of phosphonic acid [(OH)2HPO] and Potassium, Sodium and Ammonium cations. According to IUPAC, the correct nomenclature for these compounds is "phosphonates", but in common language and scientific literature they are often named "phosphites", creating ambiguity. The European legislation restricts the use of phosphonates, with the ban for

Assessment and mechanisms of microalgae growth inhibition by phosphonates: Effects of intrinsic toxicity and complexation.

The effects of phosphonates, the heavily-used antiscalants in reverse osmosis systems, on microalgae are controversial, although they are harmless to most aquatic organisms. Herein, we assessed the inhibitory effects of etidronic acid (HEDP) and diethylenetriamine penta(methylene phosphonic acid) (DTPMP) on algal growth and revealed the mechanisms involved in both intrinsic toxicity and complexation. The phosphonates showed weak influences on Scenedesmus sp. LX1 in the first 4 d of cultivation. In contrast, a significant growth inhibition was observed subsequently with half maximal effective c

Catalytic, asymmetric synthesis of phosphonic γ-(hydroxyalkyl)butenolides with contiguous quaternary and tertiary stereogenic centers.

A procedure that enables high yielding access to phosphonic γ-(hydroxyalkyl)butenolides with excellent regio-, diastereo- and enantiocontrol is reported. The simultaneous construction of up to two adjacent quaternary stereogenic centers by a catalytic asymmetric vinylogous Mukaiyama aldol reaction unites biologically and medicinally relevant entities, namely α-hydroxy phosphonates and γ-(hydroxyalkyl)butenolides. This is achieved by utilizing a readily available chiral copper-sulfoximine catalyst showing a broad functional group tolerance for both the electrophilic and nucleophilic reactants.

Synthesis of Mixed Phosphonate Esters and Amino Acid-Based Phosphonamidates, and Their Screening as Herbicides.

While organophosphorus chemistry is gaining attention in a variety of fields, the synthesis of the phosphorus derivatives of amino acids remains a challenging task. Previously reported methods require the deprotonation of the nucleophile, complex reagents or hydrolysis of the phosphonate ester. In this paper, we demonstrate how to avoid these issues by employing phosphonylaminium salts for the synthesis of novel mixed n-alkylphosphonate diesters or amino acid-derived n-alkylphosphonamidates. We successfully applied this methodology for the synthesis of novel N-acyl homoserine lactone analogues

Synthesis of DNA/RNA and their analogs via phosphoramidite and H-phosphonate chemistries.

The chemical synthesis of DNA and RNA is universally carried out using nucleoside phosphoramidites or H-phosphonates as synthons. This review focuses on the phosphorus chemistry behind these synthons and how it has been developed to generate procedures whereby yields per condensation approach 100% with very few side products. Additionally the synthesis and properties of certain DNA and RNA analogs that are modified at phosphorus will also be discussed. These analogs include boranephosphonates, metallophosphonates, and alkylboranephosphines.

Cyanide ion promoted addition of acyl phosphonates to ethyl cyanoformate: synthesis of tertiary carbinols via tandem carbon-carbon bond formations.

New cyanation/phosphonate-phosphate rearrangement/C-acylation reactions of cyanophosphate anion with cyanoformate esters are described. Phase-transfer cocatalysts facilitate cyanide-catalyzed reactions between acyl phosphonates and cyanoformates to afford protected tertiary carbinol products in good to excellent yields (74-95%). Ethyl cyanoformate is used as a cyanide source and electrophile. The scope of the reaction was investigated by using a number of benzoyl and acyl phosphonates along with ethyl cyanoformate. Representative chemoselective reduction of the product 5a afforded ethyl 3-amin
