Wandering behavior or becoming lost in familiar environments is frequently observed during progression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and may be a possible prodromal symptom of the disease but also is extremely dangerous for those suffering from this neurodegenerative disease. The accumulation of amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) has been implicated in the neuropathology and cognitive deficits associated with AD. This study investigated changes in open field movement organization in a 5xFAD mouse model of AD that and the deposition of amyloid pathology. Mouse open field behavior was collected under dark

When we observe an object, our visual system extracts both coarse and fine information to build a coherent percept. This process is often described as a coarse-to-fine integration, in which low spatial frequency (LSF) information provides an initial scaffold for interpreting high spatial frequency (HSF) detail. Here, we examined how this integration unfolds in face perception across two experiments. We leveraged the face inversion effect-where inverted faces are harder to recognize than upright ones-as a tool to probe processing flexibility. In Experiment 1, ten participants matched two famili

Twenty-nine patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST) and matched normal control subjects were asked to align a target line to perceived earth vertical [visual vertical (VV)]. Settings were made against a whole-field random-dot background that was either stationary or rotating around the line of sight, and subjects performed the task upright and lying horizontally on their sides. Normal subjects were tested both head upright and after assuming a voluntary head tilt. Patients with ST set the VV close to true upright with a minimal deviation toward tilt of the head in contrast to norma

Loss of spatial awareness has been implicated as a direct causal factor in 4-10% of serious aircraft mishaps and 10-20% of fatal aircraft mishaps (7). Spatial disorientation in flight usually results from misperception of visual, vestibular, or proprioceptive cues. Pathologic causes have rarely been implicated. A student naval aviator with recurrent loss of spatial awareness due to a defective vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), presumably from vestibular neuronitis in adolescence, is reported. His chief complaint, an inability to focus on the instrument panel during turbulent instrument meteorolog

BACKGROUND: Spatial orientation is required for independent mobility in society. Deficits in spatial orientation can be an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and there is a need for brief assessment tools to identify impairments.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the construct and known-group validity of our newly developed Spatial Orientation Screening (SOS) questionnaire.
METHODS: We included 132 patients with subjective cognitive decline (n = 16), mild cognitive impairment (n = 32), or all-cause dementia (n = 84) from a memory clinic and a reference g

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the spatial orientation of the crista ampullaris within the inner ear and its implications for the diagnosis and management of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
METHODS: Using high-resolution MRI scans of 55 normal inner ears, 3D models of the semicircular canals were segmented. These were complemented by detailed membrane labyrinth models from micro-CT scans of human temporal bones, accessed via the Comparative Ear Bank (www.earbank.org). A statistical shape model of inner ears and eyeballs was established, an

To better understand the mechanisms of human adaptation to rotating environments, we exposed 19 healthy subjects and 8 vestibular-deficient subjects ("abnormal"; four bilateral and four unilateral lesions) to an interaural centripetal acceleration of 1 g (resultant 45 degrees roll-tilt of 1.4 g) on a 0.8-m-radius centrifuge for periods of 90 min. The subjects sat upright (body z-axis parallel to centrifuge rotation axis) in the dark with head stationary, except during 4 min of every 10 min, when they performed head saccades toward visual targets switched on at 3- to 5-s intervals at random loc

Estimates of points of entering and exiting from upright posture were obtained from 25 seated, restrained patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST) and matched normal subjects exposed to cycles of 1.5 degrees/s tilts in a flight simulator. Estimates were obtained for displacements in roll and pitch about upright and for yaw tilts about a rostrocaudal, "barbecue," axis with the subjects supinated. For both pitch and roll, normal subjects estimated entering upright when they were still approximately 1 degree from machine upright and perceived themselves to be upright through a mean arc

The shifting of attention to visual stimuli was studied in twenty patients with early Parkinson's disease (stage I or II as defined by the Hoehn and Yahr scale) and twenty normal controls matched for age, sex and intellectual status. Both groups were screened to exclude dementia, psychiatric disease and other neurological abnormalities. The speed of shifting attention to visual stimuli was measured using the cost and benefit paradigm. The results showed an overall increase in response latencies in patients with early Parkinson's disease compared to the Control group, but without a concomitant

Spatial orientation of the angular vestibuloocular reflex (aVOR) was studied in rhesus monkeys after complete and partial ablation of the nodulus and ventral uvula. Horizontal, vertical, and torsional components of slow phases of nystagmus were analyzed to determine the axes of eye rotation, the time constants (Tcs) of velocity storage, and its orientation vectors. The gravito-inertial acceleration vector (GIA) was tilted relative to the head during optokinetic afternystagmus (OKAN), centrifugation, and reorientation of the head during postrotatory nystagmus. When the GIA was tilted relative t

BACKGROUND: The literature generally describes the trachea as oriented toward the right and back, but there is very little detailed characterization. Therefore, the aim of this study was to precisely determine the spatial orientation and to better characterize the physical properties of the human trachea.
METHODS: We analyzed lung computed tomography scans of 68 intubated and mechanically ventilated subjects suffering from acute lung injury/ARDS at airway pressures (Paw) of 5, 15, and 45 cm H2O. At each Paw, the inner edge of the trachea from the subglottal space to the carina was captured. T

The Default Space Theory (DST) of consciousness holds that conscious experience arises from synchronized physiological and neural oscillations that construct an internal three-dimensional "default space" approximating the body's position in the external world. This paper is a conjectural extension of DST to spatial orientation and postural balance. We propose that fast gamma-band oscillations (~30-100 Hz) bind visual, auditory, somatosensory, and motor input into a coherent internal spatial map, while slower thalamic theta (4-8 Hz) and alpha (8-12 Hz) rhythms provide temporal orientation-gatin

This article summarizes a variety of newly published findings obtained by the Neuroscience Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, and attempts to place this work within a historical framework of previous results on posture, locomotion, motion sickness, and perceptual responses that have been observed in conjunction with space flight. In this context, we have taken the view that correct transduction and integration of signals from all sensory systems is essential to maintaining stable vision, postural and locomotor control, and eye-hand coordination as components of spatial orientation. The plastici

Gerstmann's syndrome encompasses the tetrad of finger agnosia, agraphia, acalculia and right-left confusion and is associated with lesions of the dominant angular gyrus. The localizing value of this syndrome has been questioned because multiple mechanisms can account for each of the components of the syndrome. We present the case of a man who developed Gerstmann's syndrome following a focal infarct of the left angular gyrus. The patient's right-left confusion could not be accounted for by either an aphasia or a degraded body schema. A series of experiments that investigated the patient's spati

Spatial orientation and memory deficits are an often overlooked and potentially powerful early marker for pathological cognitive decline. Pen-and-paper tests for spatial abilities often do not coincide with actual navigational performance due to differences in spatial perspective and scale. Mobile devices are becoming increasingly useful in a clinical setting, for patient monitoring, clinical decision-making, and information management. The same devices have positional information that may be useful for a scale appropriate point-of-care test for spatial ability. We created a test for spatial o

Patients with postchiasmatic visual field defects often show a contralesional bias towards the scotoma in line bisection or when indicating their visual subjective straight ahead (VSSA). Recent evidence suggests a retinotopic misrepresentation of visual space in patients with homonymous quadrantanopia (HQ). We therefore assessed in the present study whether patients with HQ show an oblique shift of their VSSA towards their scotoma, in addition to the known bias in horizontal line bisection. Moreover, we examined whether eccentric fixation contributes to this shift. To this purpose, 15 non-negl

Moderate support was obtained in a sample of 101 gay, bisexual, and heterosexual males for the perinatal hormone theory, which hypothesizes that attenuated levels of androgens during critical periods of male fetal development fail to masculinize and defeminize the brain. Affected individuals develop female-typical sexual orientation (assessed here by a pie chart) and cerebral organization, reflected in visual-spatial abilities and gender nonconformity. Handedness, also thought to reflect in utero hormone exposure, was evaluated. Gay and bisexual males reported greater femininity and lesser mas
