Blisters, pruritus, and fever after bites by the Arabian tick Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) muesebecki.

A biologist was bitten by Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) muesebecki Hoogstraal, an endemic tick parasite of nesting and resting marine birds on islands in eastern Arabia. Irritating bullae developed and for four months he experienced intermittent inflammation and irritation. Two years earlier, after being bitten by the same tick species on a different island, he had experienced only irritation lasting no more than a fortnight. Petroleum-industry labourers on another island were admitted to hospital for about two weeks with bullae at numerous bite sites, intense pruritus, headache, and fever. Zirq

Nosema parkeri sp. n., a microsporidan from the argasid tick, Ornithodoros parkeri Cooley.

Nosema parkeri sp. n. is described from nymphs and adults of the argasid tick, Ornithodoros parkeri Cooley, from a laboratory colony. Schizogonic and sporogonic stages are described from various tick tissues. Spores are binucleate, measuring 3.2 (3-4) x 1.9 (1.8-2.5) micronm. Transmission is transovarial and transstadial. The parasite does not appear to affect adversely the development or reproduction of the tick. Dermacentor andersoni Stiles was experimentally infected. Attempts to infect Swiss mice by tick feeding or by injection of infected tick suspensions were unsuccessful. The microspori

The habitat suitability model for the potential distribution of Ornithodoros tholozani (Laboulbène et Mégnin, 1882) and Ornithodoros lahorensis (Neumann, 1908) (Acari: Argasidae): the main vectors of tick-borne relapsing fever in Iran.

Endemic relapsing fever (RF) is one of the most important arthropod-borne diseases caused by various types of Borrelia and transmitted by soft tick species. The investigation of the distribution of vectors in a region can help control and prevent the disease. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of Ornithodoros tholozani and Ornithodoros lahorensis in Iran and to identify the most influential climatic variables affecting their distribution. The ecological niche model was used in Maxent to predict the environmental suitability of the studied species. A review was conducted on the ea

Conspecific hyperparasitism: An alternative route for Borrelia hermsii transmission by the tick Ornithodoros hermsi.

Ixodid and argasid ticks may hyperparasitize other individuals of their own species to acquire a blood meal, however most accounts are based on single observations and the behavior has rarely been studied. While maintaining laboratory colonies of Ornithodoros species, we noticed that unfed ticks occasionally fed on other ticks that were feeding on mice, and unfed ticks parasitized engorged ticks when confined together in tubes. Therefore, we investigated hyperparasitism by Ornithodoros hermsi and the ability of these ticks to acquire and transmit the relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia hermsii

An experimental assessment of the tampan tick Ornithodoros moubata as vector of hepatitis B virus.

Wild-caught and colonized tampan ticks, Ornithodoros moubata (Murray), were fed on hepatitis B virus (HBV)-positive blood-means in a series of four experiments. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) persisted in nymphal and adult ticks for up to 779 days, while the epsmark antigen (HBeAg) persisted in mature nymphs up to 13 days, in adult males up to 11 days and in adult females up to 16 days. HBsAg was transmitted trans-stadially through two moults during the life cycle but transovarial transmission did not occur. The surface antigen was transmitted by two out of fifteen single ticks into 0.4 m

[Observations on the behaviour of coxiella burneti in the argasid tick ornithodoros moubata (author's transl)].

Based on a long-term study of many years, a report is given on the behaviour of Coxiella burneti in the argasid tick, Ornithodoros moubata. Recent observations were made on ticks infected on mice and subsequently maintained separately. Particular emphasis was placed upon the localization of the ricksettsiae in certain organs of the ticks, its excretion -also with regard to routes of transmission - and transovarial passage. C. burneti invade primarily the gut epithelial cells of the tick and these cells remain infested with the causative agent throughout the entire life of the vector. After a c

A Novel Relapsing Fever Group Borrelia Isolated from Ornithodoros Ticks of the Brazilian Caatinga.

Tick-borne relapsing fever group (RFG) borreliosis remains neglected as a human disease and little is known on its maintenance in ticks and vertebrates, especially in South America. Therefore, this study investigated borrelial infection in Ornithodoros ticks collected in rodent-inhabited rock formations in the Brazilian semiarid region, within the Caatinga biome. Collected ticks (Ornithodoros rietcorreai and Ornithodoros cf. tabajara) were allowed to feed under laboratory conditions on guinea pigs, which had blood samples examined daily by dark-field microscopy. No spirochetes were visualized

New Rickettsia species in soft ticks Ornithodoros hasei collected from bats in French Guiana.

In French Guiana, located on the northeastern coast of South America, bats of different species are very numerous. The infection of bats and their ticks with zoonotic bacteria, especially Rickettsia species, is so far unknown. In order to improve knowledge of these zoonotic pathogens in this French overseas department, the presence and diversity of tick-borne bacteria was investigated with molecular tools in bat ticks. In the beginning of 2013, 32 bats were caught in Saint-Jean-du-Maroni, an area close to the coast of French Guiana, and the ticks of these animals were collected. A total of 354

Cloning, characterization and diagnostic performance of the salivary lipocalin protein TSGP1 from Ornithodoros moubata.

The argasid tick Ornithodoros moubata is distributed throughout South and East Africa and Madagascar, where it colonizes wild and domestic habitats and feeds on warthogs, domestic swine, and humans. This argasid transmits the spirochete Borrelia duttonii, causing East African tick-borne relapsing fever in humans, and the African swine fever virus, which causes a highly lethal haemorrhagic disease in pigs. Tick surveillance and the elimination of O. moubata from synanthropic environments (human dwellings and pigsties) would facilitate the control and prevention of these two diseases. Since dire

The medical and veterinary role of Ornithodoros erraticus complex ticks (Acari: Ixodida) on the Iberian Peninsula.

Argasid ticks of the Ornithodoros erraticus complex are associated with traditional pig-farming practices on the Iberian Peninsula and are also found elsewhere in North Africa, West Africa, and western Asia. The ticks associated with pig farming on the Iberian Peninsula are the only biological vectors of African swine fever virus (ASFV) known to occur in Europe, and their ecology makes them an extremely effective reservoir of both ASFV and the Borrelia species which cause tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) in humans. The recent reappearance of ASFV in the European Union, coupled with evidence t

Genome report: whole-genome assembly of the relapsing fever tick Ornithodoros turicata Dugès (Acari: Argasidae).

The soft tick family Argasidae contains vectors of medical and veterinary importance, but few molecular resources are available compared to hard ticks (Ixodidae). One example is Ornithodoros turicata, a recognized vector of Borrelia turicatae, causal agent of human relapsing fever, and a putative vector of African swine fever virus. To address the current lack of molecular resources for the Argasidae, we generated a chromosome-level genome assembly for O. turicata using PacBio sequencing in conjunction with an Illumina Hi-C library. The resulting reference genome has a total of 1.1 Gb in lengt

Evidence of common and genus-specific epitopes on Ornithodoros spp. Tick (Acari: Argasidae) salivary proteins.

New Zealand White rabbits were repeatedly infested with Ornithodoros turicata (Duges), Ornithodoros talaje (Guérin-Méneville), and Ornithodoros coriaceus (Koch) at 2-wk intervals. Blood samples were taken from each animal 10 d after each infestation and the titer of anti-tick antibody was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Subsequent cross-reactivity studies demonstrated that the antitick antisera nonspecifically bound to salivary gland extract proteins prepared from several other tick genera and species' Amblyomma maculatum (Koch), Dermacentor andersoni (Stiles), Dermacentor var

Infestation by Ornithodoros rietcorreai on captive Boa constrictor with reports of human parasitism and environmental colonization.

Reptiles of the order Squamata are commonly parasitized by ticks in the family Ixodidae. However, they can also host argasid ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. In this study, we reported Ornithodoros rietcorreai parasitizing a Boa constrictor and a human in Caatinga Zoobotanical Park, within the 72nd Caatinga Infantry Battalion of the Brazilian Army in Petrolina, Pernambuco (PE). Thirty argasid tick specimens, including two larvae, 17 nymphs, four females, and seven males, were removed from the body surface of the snake. Substantial environmental infestations were observed within the snake enclo

Isolation and molecular characterization of a relapsing fever Borrelia recovered from Ornithodoros rudis in Brazil.

In South America, early reports from more than 50 years ago incriminated Ornithodoros rudis as vector of Borrelia venezuelensis, an agent of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF). Herein we report the rediscovery of O. rudis by means of morphological, biological and molecular analyses, which also comprise the first report of this tick species in Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis using partial fragments of mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene suggested that O. rudis forms a monophyletic group with Ornithodoros erraticus. By using laboratory rodents as hosts, we isolated a relapsing fever Borrelia from an infect

Immunocytochemical localization of an insulin-like substance in the synganglion of the tick Ornithodoros parkeri (Acari: Argasidae).

Immunocytochemical staining based on the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method has shown that some neurosecretory cells (NSC) in the synganglion of the adult female tick Ornithodoros parkeri react with an antibody to bovine insulin. There are 18 regions of paraldehyde fuchsin-positive NSC of which three regions showed specific insulin-like immunoreactivity: anterolateral cheliceral, anteromedial stomodeal and posterior opisthosomal. Immunoreactivity can also be found in the extracellular surface of the neurilemma of the synganglion. This suggests a possible neurohemal site and release of neurohormo

Pathogen Detection in Ornithodoros sonrai Ticks and Invasive House Mice Mus musculus domesticus in Senegal.

Ornithodoros sonrai (O. sonrai) ticks are the only known vectors of Borrelia crocidurae, an agent of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) borreliosis. Rodents serve as principal natural reservoirs for Borrelia. Our research objective was to detect TBRF Borrelia and other zoonotic bacterial infections in ticks and in house mice Mus musculus domesticus, an invasive species currently expanding in rural northern Senegal. Real-time and conventional PCR were utilized for detecting Borrelia and other bacterial taxa. The analyses were performed on 253 specimens of O. sonrai and 150 samples of brain and s

MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry detection of pathogens in vectors: the Borrelia crocidurae/Ornithodoros sonrai paradigm.

BACKGROUND: In Africa, relapsing fever borreliae are neglected vector-borne pathogens that cause mild to deadly septicemia and miscarriage. Screening vectors for the presence of borreliae currently requires technically demanding, time- and resource-consuming molecular methods. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) has recently emerged as a tool for the rapid identification of vectors and the identification of cultured borreliae. We investigated whether MALDI-TOF-MS could detect relapsing fever borreliae directly in ticks. METHODOLOGY/PRINC

New records of ticks infesting bats in Brazil, with observations on the first nymphal stage of Ornithodoros hasei.

In Brazil, at least 14 species of soft ticks (Argasidae) are associated with bats. While Ornithodoros hasei seems to be abundant among foliage-roosting bats, other groups of ticks are found exclusively inside caves. In this paper, noteworthy records of soft ticks infesting bats are documented in new localities from Bahia, Pernambuco, Piauí, and Rondônia states. Out of 201 bats examined, 25 were infested by 152 ticks belonging to seven taxa: Ornithodoros cavernicolous, O. hasei, Ornithodoros marinkellei, Ornithodoros cf. fonsecai, Ornithodoros cf. clarki, Antricola sp., and Nothoaspis amazonien

Borrelia crocidurae in Ornithodoros ticks from northwestern Morocco: a range extension in relation to climatic change?

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is caused by Borrelia spirochetes transmitted to humans by Argasid soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. We investigated the presence of Ornithodoros ticks in rodent burrows in nine sites of the Gharb region of northwestern Morocco where we recently documented a high incidence of TBRF in humans. We assessed the Borrelia infection rate by nested PCR and sequencing. All sites investigated were colonized by ticks of the Ornithodoros marocanus complex and a high proportion of burrows (38.4%) were found to be infested. Borrelia infections were observed in 6.8% of t
