[Invisible orthodontics: clear aligners and customized lingual appliances].

In recent years, invisible orthodontics has been one of the concerns of both orthodontists and patients. As two types of invisible orthodontics, clear aligners fit for cases that have high demand for living quality, need distalization of molars or intrusion of incisors, suffer from severe periodontitis, or that have non-abundant time for visits. While customized lingual appliances fit for cases that have high demand for aesthetics, have deep overbite or complex malocclusion, need maxillary expansion or retraction of incisors, or that have low compliance and good economic conditions. Based on a

The Potential Allergic Role of Mast Cells to Orthodontic Appliance in Orthodontic-Induced Gingival Enlargement.

BACKGROUND: Gingival mast cells (MCs) are strategically scattered throughout connective tissue and adhere to the endothelium to convert local impulses into systemic signals and attract additional immune effector cells. Numerous mediators, such as histamine, cytokines, and proteases, modulate these interaction pathways. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine and compare MC count in the gingival enlargement tissue of patients receiving orthodontic treatment versus patients having plaque-induced gingival enlargement without orthodontic treatment, utilising hematoxylin and eosin (

Determination of the Effects of Removable Orthodontic Appliances Used in Orthodontic Treatment on the Axis Angles of Molars.

BACKGROUND Tooth morphology and crown angulations are among the anatomical factors that can influence orthodontic outcomes. This study aimed to compare the changes in molar base angle (MBA), the angle of molar teeth relative to the jaw axis, in individuals using different removable functional orthodontic appliances. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 40 patients were included. Images taken from each patient were collected from the orthodontic patient archive and categorized into 4 groups, as follows: group A, maxillary expansion appliance; group B, twin-block/monoblock appliances; group C, face m

Microbial Changes in the Periodontal Environment Due to Orthodontic Appliances: A Review.

Orthodontic appliances significantly influence the microbiological dynamics within the oral cavity, transforming symbiotic relationships into dysbiotic states that can lead to periodontal diseases. This review synthesizes current findings on how orthodontic treatments, particularly fixed and removable appliances, foster niches for bacterial accumulation and complicate oral hygiene maintenance. Advanced culture-independent methods were employed to identify shifts toward anaerobic and pathogenic bacteria, with fixed appliances showing a more pronounced impact compared to clear aligners. The stud

Initial arch wires for tooth alignment during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances.

BACKGROUND: Initial arch wires are the first arch wires to be inserted into the fixed appliance at the beginning of orthodontic treatment and are used mainly for the alignment of teeth by correcting crowding and rotations. With a number of different types of orthodontic arch wires available for initial tooth alignment, it is important to understand which wire is most efficient, as well as which wires cause the least amount of root resorption and pain during the initial aligning stage of treatment. This is an update of the review 'Initial arch wires for alignment of crooked teeth with fixed orth

Allergic reactions to nickel-containing orthodontic appliances: clinical signs and treatment alternatives.

Nickel is the most common contact allergen. Nickel-containing orthodontic appliances are implicated in allergic reactions, which represent a type IV delayed hypersensitivity immune response. Nickel hypersensitivity is diagnosed through the patient's history, clinical findings, and biocompatibility testing (patch skin tests). While testing the level of nickel in mucosa and blood does not have diagnostic value, the in vitro cell proliferation assays could be an important diagnostic tool. Allergic hypersensitivity reactions may involve intra- and extraoral clinical signs, comprising diffuse eryth

The Condition of the Masseter Muscles After Orthodontic Treatment with Fixed Appliances.

BACKGROUND: One of the methods used in malocclusion treatment is the use of fixed appliances. Research conducted so far has revealed that changes in bite force occurring over the course of orthodontic treatment are directly related to the functional status of the masticatory muscles. It is therefore advisable to find out how the biomechanical parameters of the masseter muscles change after treatment with the application of fixed appliances. METHODS: The study material comprised 74 individuals, divided into the study group (n = 37) treated by means of fixed orthodontic appliances over the aver

Clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical changes of the superficial marginal periodontium caused by orthodontic treatment with fixed metallic orthodontic appliances.

Malocclusions negatively influence dental function, physical well-being, and quality of life. According to data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), malocclusions represent the third most widespread oral health problem, after dental caries and periodontal diseases. In recent years, more and more people call for orthodontic treatment with fixed braces that aim at establishing a dental, aesthetic, and functional balance, compatible with a normal life. Our study assessed the histopathological and immunohistochemical changes that occurred in superficial marginal periodontal components,

Face and neck dermatitis from a stainless steel orthodontic appliance.

Although nickel is the most common cause of contact allergy, nickel-containing orthodontic appliances seldom cause adverse reactions that result in discontinuation of treatment. We report on an eruption of dermatitis in the face and neck of an adult female patient after placement of a rapid maxillary expansion appliance (RME). Because the patient suspected nickel allergy, her tolerance to the appliance material was tested intraorally before treatment by cementing bands on four teeth for a week. No visible adverse reactions were seen during the test. One week after cementation of the RME applia

Exploring the impact of orthodontic appliances on the oral microbiome and inflammatory parameters.

BACKGROUND: The symbiotic relationship between the oral microbiome and the host immune system is a prerequisite of oral health. Disruptions to this system can be associated with the development of diseases like dental caries. Introducing orthodontic treatments, such as aligners and fixed appliances, might impact this microbial ecosystem. This study evaluated potential changes in salivary microbiome and the level of inflammatory marker myeloid-related protein 8/14 in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with aligners or fixed appliances. METHODS: Forty-eight patients were divided into two

Pyogenic granuloma: a rare side complication from an orthodontic appliance.

This case report discusses a rare side effect associated with the use ofa fixed quad helix orthodontic appliance. A 14-year-old healthy girl presented with a painful enlarging mass on her tongue, which was causing distress to both her and her parents. Investigations confirmed that the mass was a pyogenic granuloma and management involved surgical excision of the mass and removal of the quad helix appliance. At least once previous case associated with an orthodontic quad helix appliance has been reported in the literature.

Choosing a pre-adjusted orthodontic appliance prescription for anterior teeth.

A common orthodontic task is to correct anterior tooth position using brackets whose torque, tip and in-out are pre-adjusted. Bracket prescription greatly influences final aesthetics and function. Pre-adjusted orthodontic brackets have in-built prescriptions of torque, tip and in-out which are optimized for average cases. Refinement of tooth position can be achieved by archwire adjustment or archwire auxiliaries. Modifications to bracket position such as inversion can also help achieve individual tooth movements. Planning bracket position must be considered at the outset of treatment to achiev
