Observational Study of the Association Between Oral Helicobacter pylori, Fixed Orthodontic Appliances, and Gastric Cancer Risk.

Background:Helicobacter pylori is a well-established risk factor for gastric carcinogenesis. Increasing evidence suggests that the oral cavity may serve as an extragastric reservoir for the bacterium, potentially contributing to persistent infection and reinfection. Orthodontic appliances can modify oral biofilm ecology and may facilitate bacterial colonization. This study aimed to investigate the association between oral H. pylori colonization and gastric cancer, while exploring the potential modifying role of fixed orthodontic appliances. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional observ

Changes of epiglottis and hyoid bone position after orthodontic treatment with cast splint fixed functional appliances.

OBJECTIVES: Angle Class II malocclusions including a retrognathic mandible are the most frequent orthodontic problems. Both removable and fixed functional appliances can be used for mandibular advancement. Mandibular advancement after treatment with any fixed functional appliance has numerous therapeutic effects, such as stretching of masticatory muscles, ligaments, membranes and surrounding soft tissues, thus causing positional changes of the hyoid bone and epiglottis. This retrospective study investigates and compares treatment effects upon epiglottis- and hyoid bone position and posterior a

Influence of pH on the release of nickel ions from fixed orthodontic appliances in artificial saliva.

AIM: The aim of this study was to make a laboratory assessment of pH influence on the kinetics of the release of nickel ions in artificial saliva. METHODS AND MATERIAL: In this study, 15 basic orthodontic appliances are immersed in 15 polyethylene tubes each containing 40 ml of artificial saliva. Tubes were divided into three sub-groups of 5 tubes depending on the pH: pH 5, pH 7 and pH 8. The release of nickel ions was measured using atomic absorption spectrometry in a sample of 5 ml of artificial saliva taken one hour, four hours and one hundred and sixty-eight hours after immersion in a wat

Root resorption factors associated with orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

External apical root resorption (EARR) is a serious complication that should be avoided during orthodontic treatment; this pathology depends on multiple factors. Data from clinical studies should be assessed to determine the influence these factors have on the development of EARR. This systematic review aims to compare EARR produced by different factors (orthodontic systems, dental trauma, and dental vitality). The protocol was registered on the PROSPERO database. The search was performed on 5 databases. Accepted study designs included randomized controlled trials, nonrandomized clinical trial

Alterations in subgingival microbiota during full-fixed appliance orthodontic treatment-A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Full-fixed appliance orthodontic treatment (commonly called braces) increases plaque accumulation and the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis. However, little consensus exists on changes to subgingival microbiota and specific periodontopathogens during treatment with braces. Prior studies have been hampered by selection biases due to dependence on culture conditions, candidate-based PCR and shallow sequencing methods. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to provide the first longitudinal, culture-free and deep-sequence profiling of subgingival bacteria in subjects during early stages of

Apical root resorption 6 months after initiation of fixed orthodontic appliance therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Individual predisposition might be a major reason for the observed variation in apical orthodontic root resorption. If so, resorption might be expressed during the initial stages of orthodontic therapy in patients at risk. METHODS: To explore this hypothesis, we evaluated standardized, digitized periapical radiographs made before treatment (T1) and at a mean period of 6.4 months (SD 0.9) after placement of maxillary incisor brackets (T2) in 290 patients (age range, 10.1 to 57.1 years at T1). Anamnestic and treatment parameters were recorded according to a protocol, and maxillary

Effectiveness of Different Toothbrushing Methods on Plaque Accumulation and Gingival Health in Patients With Fixed Orthodontic Appliances.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining adequate oral hygiene during fixed orthodontic treatment is challenging because brackets, archwires, and ligatures promote plaque retention and increase the risk of gingival inflammation. Various toothbrush designs have been introduced to improve plaque removal; however, their comparative effectiveness in orthodontic patients remains unclear. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of different toothbrushing methods in maintaining plaque control and gingival health among patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study incl
