BACKGROUND: One of the methods used in malocclusion treatment is the use of fixed appliances. Research conducted so far has revealed that changes in bite force occurring over the course of orthodontic treatment are directly related to the functional status of the masticatory muscles. It is therefore advisable to find out how the biomechanical parameters of the masseter muscles change after treatment with the application of fixed appliances.
METHODS: The study material comprised 74 individuals, divided into the study group (n = 37) treated by means of fixed orthodontic appliances over the aver

Embedding of orthodontic appliances within the oral mucosa represents an infrequent but clinically relevant complication that may result in pain, mucosal injury, and functional discomfort if not identified early. This report describes two cases managed in the Department of Periodontology. The first case involved a 17-year-old female presenting with a submerged orthodontic mini-implant in the maxillary right second premolar region associated with pain during mastication and speech. The second case involved a 22-year-old female with partial mucosal embedding of the U-shaped loop of a transpalata

This clinical report describes the simultaneous use of functional and fixed appliances to modify the pattern of dentofacial development and align teeth in preparation for prosthodontic habilitation of a growing child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. The treatment objective was to create a more favorable starting point for the prosthodontic phase of habilitation by improving the sagittal and vertical skeletal relationships and facial esthetics. This was accomplished through growth modification with functional appliances conducted simultaneously with eruption of maxillary and mandibular m

Anterior crossbite correction in early mixed dentition is highly recommended as this kind of malocclusion do not diminish with age. Uncorrected anterior crossbite may lead to abnormal wear of the lower incisors, dental compensation of mandibular incisors leading to thinning of labial alveolar plate and/or gingival recession. There are several methods for solving this problem. In this article we would like to describe removable inclined plane. This is a removable simple functional appliance on the lower arch (jaw), which works as inclined plane. One of the advantage of the Bruckl appliance is t

Orthodontic treatment, offering significant benefits for oral function and facial aesthetics, is in high demand among both adolescent and adult populations. Orthodontic appliances pose challenges for maintaining oral hygiene and increase the risk of dental and periodontal diseases. With advances in dental materials and the use of nanoparticles, a significant amount of research has focused on modifying orthodontic appliances with nanoparticles to reduce bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Silver nanoparticles are one of the most popular antibacterial materials in medical research. This ar

BACKGROUND: Prominent upper front teeth are a common problem affecting about a quarter of 12-year-old children in the UK. The condition develops when permanent teeth erupt. These teeth are more likely to be injured and their appearance can cause significant distress. Children are often referred to an orthodontist for treatment with dental braces to reduce the prominence of their teeth. If a child is referred at a young age, the orthodontist is faced with the dilemma of whether to treat the patient early or to wait and provide treatment in adolescence.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of orth

INTRODUCTION: Clear Aligner Mandibular Advancement (CAMA) has emerged as an esthetic alternative for correcting Class II malocclusion, yet its efficacy compared to traditional functional appliances remains debated. The aim of this systematic review was to systematically evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of CAMA features compared to traditional functional appliances in growing patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library up to December 31, 2025. Randomized controlled trials (RCT

BACKGROUND: Patients with class II malocclusion generally seek orthodontic treatment for esthetic concern. Various myo-functionl appliances can be used for the treatment of skeletal as well as the dental malocclusion in a growing patient. Among various functional appliances, twin block appliance is most commonly used due to better patient compliances. It redirects the mandibular growth to correct the maxillomandibular relationship, enhancing facial esthet ics. This article presents a modified design of the twin block appliance which is less bulky, more esthetic, can be used concurrently with f

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of fixed functional appliances that are commonly used in the treatment of Class II malocclusion caused by mandibular retrognathia, using the MTT cell viability assays [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] (Sigma Chemical Co., Milan, Italy).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cytotoxicity of five different fixed functional appliances commonly used in orthodontic treatments was assessed. The appliances evaluated included Jasper Jumper (American Orthodontics, Wisconsin, USA), Power Scope (American Orthodont

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Clear aligners were initially limited to the treatment of mild malocclusions. Recent advancements have expanded their use to skeletal Class II correction through mandibular advancement features designed to mimic conventional functional appliances. However, evidence regarding their clinical effectiveness, particularly compared with traditional functional appliances, remains limited. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of clear aligners with mandibular advancement in the management of Class II malocclusion, in comparison with con

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this research was to compare the 2 treatment protocols including a functional mandibular advancer (FMA; Forestadent, Pforzheim, Germany) followed by multibracket appliances (MBAs) vs a Forsus device (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) in combination with MBA concerning treatment outcomes and posttreatment stability.
METHODS: This study was conducted using lateral cephalograms of patients who were treated with MBA, which was used either after an FMA or concurrently with a Forsus device, and of patients who had untreated Class II malocclusion (control group). Each group

BACKGROUND: Some orthodontic devices used in children share similar design principles to appliances used to treat obstructive sleep apnoea in adults. As well as treating malocclusion, orthodontic appliances used in children may therefore also have effects on the upper airway.
OBJECTIVE: A review of the literature to assess the effects of orthodontic treatment on the upper airway dimensions in children assessed on CBCT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following registration of the protocol (PROSPERO CRD42023439056), a systematic electronic search of published studies was performed using several databa

BACKGROUND: Apnoea is a breathing disorder marked by the absence of airflow at the nose or mouth. In children, risk factors include adenotonsillar hypertrophy, obesity, neuromuscular disorders and craniofacial anomalies. The most common treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) in childhood is adenotonsillectomy. This approach is limited by its surgical risks, mostly in children with comorbities and, in some patients, by recurrence that can be associated with craniofacial problems. Oral appliances and functional orthopaedic appliances have been used for patients who have OSAS and

BACKGROUND: Fixed orthodontic appliances are widely used for the correction of malocclusions in adolescents. Although effective in achieving optimal dental alignment and occlusion, they may influence patients' daily life experiences. This study aimed to assess the impact of fixed orthodontic appliances on oral function, pain, discomfort, and social and emotional well-being among adolescents.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 364 Egyptian adolescents aged 13-18 years (242 females, 122 males). Participants were categorized according to the type of ort

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatment procedures affect oral health-related quality of life. This study analyzed and compared the patients using the Frankel 2 Regulator (FR2) and Twin-block (TB) orthodontic appliances.
METHODS: This follow-up observational study comprised adolescents aged 10-16 years with Class II malocclusion seeking orthodontic treatment, between April and December 2019, in a private orthodontic clinic. Following the finalization of orthodontic clinical decisions, 88 patients, in a 1:1 ratio, using FR2 (n = 44) and TB (n = 44) appliances, were invited to participate in this s
