Dental anomalies of size, number, and position have been suggested to have a genetic background and frequently complicate the orthodontic treatment. Early intervention is a paramount step in managing patients with dental anomaly patterns (DAPs) to decrease the complexity of the case during the later stages of comprehensive orthodontic care. This case report highlights the importance of the detailed diagnosis in a case with several dental anomalies (mandibular lateral incisor-canine transposition, palatally displaced canines, small-sized maxillary lateral incisors and congenitally missing secon

Purpose: Although rapid maxillary expansion (RME), transpalatal arch (TPA) and cervical-pull headgear (HG) have been suggested for the interception of palatally displaced permanent canines (PDCs), existing knowledge remains inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to assess these practices in an evidence-based manner.
Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the prevalence of physiologic PDC eruption after using RME, TPA and HG, with or without the extraction of the primary canines, were searched, and the risk of bias was assessed.
Results: Data from five RCTs we

Linguoversion of deciduous mandibular canine teeth can be a painful condition, interferes with the development and growth of the jaws, and potentially leads to further malocclusions affecting permanent dentition. Extraction of linguoverted deciduous mandibular canines is considered an interceptive orthodontic procedure that would allow unimpeded development of the jaws and permanent teeth. This study assessed clinical records of 124 dogs that had linguoverted deciduous mandibular canine teeth surgically extracted between October 2010 and September 2019 in a veterinary dental referral clinic. PURPOSE: Ectopic eruption anomaly, manifesting as tooth transposition, often presents a complex therapeutic challenge. Mandibular lateral incisor- canine transposition, although observed with rarity, tends to have major impact on development of proper dentition and adversely influence physical, nutritional, aesthetic and overall psychosocial well being of the patient. This report chronicles individualized one-phase orthodontic management of the case of incomplete transposition between mandibular right lateral incisor and canine in a 9-year-old boy during mixed dentition period.

BACKGROUND: Mucogingival interceptive therapy in patients with buccally erupting teeth is performed to prevent the ectopic permanent tooth from developing periodontal lesions. The keratinized tissue entrapped between the erupting tooth and the deciduous tooth is retained to maintain a satisfactory width of the gingiva for the permanent tooth. The aim of the present study on buccally-erupted premolars scheduled for orthodontics was to evaluate the keratinized tissue width 3 months, 2 years, and 7 years subsequent to mucogingival interceptive therapy and orthodontic treatment.

The purpose of this article is to present the treatment of a 8-year-old boy with tooth ankylosis in teeth 85 and Class II division 1 malocclusion and to report a 10-year follow-up result. The patient was initially treated with a sagittal removable appliance, followed by an eruption guidance appliance and braces. The interceptive orthodontic treatment performed to recover the space lost by ankylosis of a deciduous tooth allowed a spontaneous eruption and prevented progression of the problem. The use of an eruption-guidance appliance corrected the dentoskeletal Class II, thus improving the patie

BACKGROUND: The aim of this 2-year longitudinal study was to compare the width of keratinized gingiva after orthodontic therapy for buccally erupting premolars that had been pretreated by extraction of deciduous teeth alone versus interceptive mucogingival surgery.
METHODS: In 8 patients (aged 9 to 12 years) who presented with bilateral buccal eruption of homologous teeth (premolars), one side was randomly treated with extraction of the deciduous molar and mucogingival surgery (test site), while the other side was treated only by extraction of the deciduous molar (control site). BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Class II malocclusion in growing patients may be associated with altered mandibular posture, occlusal instability, and adaptive changes in masticatory muscle function. This prospective, controlled, non-randomized longitudinal study evaluated changes in masseter and anterior temporalis muscle activity during Andresen functional appliance therapy and compared them with untreated Class I and Class II controls.
METHODS: Seventy children with skeletal and dental Class II malocclusion were treated with a customized Andresen appliance; 50 untreated Class II children and 30 unt

INTRODUCTION: Interceptive treatment of Class II, Division 1 malocclusion is a challenge orthodontists commonly face due to the different growth patterns they come across and the different treatment strategies they have available.
OBJECTIVE: To report five cases of interceptive orthodontics performed with the aid of Klammt's elastic open activator (KEOA) to treat Class II, Division 1 malocclusion.
METHODS: Treatment comprehends one or two phases; and the use of functional orthopedic appliances, whenever properly recommended, is able to minimize dentoskeletal discrepancies with consequent imp

The etiology of malocclusions basically involves both congenital and environmental factors. Malocclusion is the result of the abnormal development of the orofacial complex (including tooth, dental alveolar bone, upper and lower jaws). Early orthodontic interceptive treatments involve the elimination of all congenital and environmental factors that contribute to the malformation of the orofacial complex, as well as interrupt the deviated development of the orofacial complex and the occlusion. Early orthodontic interceptive treatments mainly aim to use children's growth potential to correct abno

The unerupted and impacted tooth is a common problem and the reason for many orthodontic and pediatric dental referrals, yet the approach to their management is still an area of controversy. This article presents two cases of severely impacted teeth that spontaneously erupted in the maxillary and mandibular arches. The first patient, a 9-year-old girl, presented a severe impaction of mandibular right and left second premolars. The second patient, a 7-year-old girl, presented with a severely impacted maxillary central incisor. In both cases, the teeth spontaneously erupted into excellent positi

Childhood caries is a public health problem with a significant burden on the community. The specialist dental workforce cannot adequately manage all treatment needs in children. Therefore, the general dental community remains critical in delivering care to children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-rated confidence of general practitioners in treating children. A cross-sectional survey was designed that involved general dentists in various primary care centers in Jordan. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience and self-perceived level of

Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has been increasingly incorporated into dentistry, expanding the possibilities of digital workflows through greater precision, customization, and optimization of clinical procedures. In pediatric orthodontics, CAD/CAM has been applied in different clinical contexts, although its use is still evolving. This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesize the applications of CAD/CAM in preventive and interceptive orthodontics in children, considering the devices used and the main reported outcomes. The search was conducted i

The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze palatally displaced maxillary canines referred for specialist treatment compared with those successfully treated by the general practitioner by interceptive extraction of either the primary canine or the primary canine and primary first molar. Special interest was focused on chronological age, dental age and dental maturity as well as the position of the canine at the time of recognition and referral. The Interceptive Treatment group consisted of 50 consecutive cases from computerized records, median age 11.7 years (range 8.9-14.11 years).

Mixed dentition treatment is an important subject because early treatment could not only correct the occlusion but also may ensure normal development of the teeth. Proper arch form and dental relationships in the mixed dentition lessen the need for additional orthodontic treatment. The objectives in mixed dentition orthodontic therapy are to correct dental arch irregularities, occlusal and jaw relation abnormalities, and to eliminate functional interferences.
