BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Studies have reported the advantages of digital imaging-assisted orthognathic surgery planning, but there is scarce information about a full digital planning modality. This study evaluated the 3D cephalometric-based and patient-reported outcomes of a full digital workflow for orthognathic surgery planning in the treatment of asymmetric maxillomandibular disharmony.
METHODS: A postoperative 3D image dataset of 30 Taiwanese Chinese patients with asymmetric skeletal Class III deformities who underwent full digital planning for two-jaw surgery were retrieved from the authors'

Virtual surgical planning (VSP) has revolutionized craniofacial surgery by enhancing preoperative planning and surgical precision, though its optimal applications in pediatric cases remain incompletely defined. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the evolution and expanding applications of VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery at our tertiary pediatric hospital. A retrospective review of index craniofacial procedures performed between 2011 and 2023 at a tertiary pediatric hospital was conducted, analyzing VSP utilization, including the use of stereolithographic models, cutting guides, splint

OBJECTIVE: In orthognathic surgery, it is important to carefully manage peri-operative nutrition because maxillomandibular fixation and problems such as swelling and pain after surgery may make it difficult to eat normally and may prevent adequate nutrition. This study investigated the changes in nutritional status of patients with jaw deformities due to orthognathic surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: The subjects were 155 jaw deformity patients, who underwent orthognathic surgery. The nutritional status was evaluated using anthropometry immediately before and 10 days after surgery and clinical laborator

Orthognathic surgery for occlusal improvement commonly requires preoperative and postoperative orthodontic treatments to fine-tune intercuspation. This report focuses on the feasibility, treatment goals, and outcomes of orthognathic surgery in a series of patients with congenital dentofacial anomalies who were considered ineligible for or noncompliant with orthodontic treatment. Despite suboptimal occlusal outcomes, the orthognathic procedures resulted in tangible benefits for the patients. We conclude that surgical treatment without concomitant orthodontics is a viable option in selected pati

The aim of this study was to compare the soft tissue predicative abilities of two established programs depending on the surgical technique and amount of displacement. On the basis of 50 computed tomography images, 11 orthognathic operations with differences in displacement distances and technique (maxillary advancement, MxA; maxillary impaction, MxI; mandibular setback, MnS; mandibular advancement, MnA bimaxillary displacement, MxA/MnS) as well as corresponding soft tissue predictions were simulated using the programs Dolphin (D) and ProPlan (PP). For all the soft tissue predictions by the two

The retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the incidence and characteristics of these complications in patients who underwent orthognathic procedures. Data on the intraoperative and the postoperative complications were extracted from the patients' medical files. Procedures were further subdivided into single-jaw procedures and bimaxillary procedures. A total of 209 orthognathic procedures were carried out in 190 patients. 184 (88%) were performed to treat angle class III malocclusion, while 25 (12%) aimed to treat class II malocclusion. A total of 94 complication events were observed (44.9

PURPOSE: Conventional orthognathic surgical planning has limitations in accurately transferring the relationship between soft tissue and bone. Virtual planning offers enhanced accuracy and visualization through computer simulation. This study aimed to compare the need for reoperation between patients who underwent conventional and virtual surgical planning for orthognathic surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 352 patients who underwent orthognathic surgery. Reoperation rates and reasons for reoperation were evaluated in patients with conventional model surgery planning (143 patie

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the dissection of the palate during primary surgery and the type of orthognathic surgery needed in cases of unilateral total cleft. The review concerns 58 children born with a complete unilateral cleft lip and palate and treated between 1994 and 2008 at the appropriate age for orthognathic surgery. This is a retrospective mixed-longitudinal study. Patients with syndromes or associated anomalies were excluded. All children were treated by the same orthodontist and by the same surgical team. Children are divided into 2 groups: the first grou

Mandibular hypoplasia is a common dentofacial deformity requiring a combination of orthodontic and surgical treatment. Before the introduction of distraction osteogenesis various orthognathic surgical procedures were carried out to treat mandibular hypoplasia. Orthognathic procedures like corpus lengthening by bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy and genioplasty are commonly practised all over the world to address the high esthetic demands and functional problems. But hardly there are any established orthognathic surgical procedures to address the deficiency of the posterior part of the ma

Orthognathic camouflage refers to the use of procedures other than traditional orthognathic surgery for correction of facial dysmorphology that reflects underlying skeletal discrepancy that was either not addressed on initial orthodontic evaluation or not corrected by nonsurgical treatment of the malocclusion. The authors aim to illustrate to the orthodontic community the common clinical presentation of patients who seek consultation from a surgeon citing dissatisfaction with their facial appearance secondary to orthodontic correction of the malocclusion with dental compensation but without su

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery, while highly effective in correcting dentofacial deformities, inherently poses a risk of neurosensory complications. Despite the growing volume of these surgical procedures, real-world data remain limited concerning the precise incidence, clinical course, and efficacy of various therapeutic interventions for nerve injuries in this specific context. This study aims to delineate the incidence, anatomical distribution, and treatment outcomes of trigeminal nerve injuries observed after orthognathic surgery within a tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND: Facial appearance is an important factor, affects social and psychological well-being. The ideal positioning of jaws and soft tissues is crucial during orthognathic surgery for a better outcome, but the response of facial soft tissues does not always reflect the exact movements of the underlying jaws in 1:1 ratio. So, soft tissue changes following orthognathic surgery require utmost attention during surgical correction to make successful treatment.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of perioral soft tissue changes after orthognathic surgical procedures. The objectives of the study we

BACKGROUND: Facial and smile attractiveness are significant motivating factor for patients to seek orthodontic treatment. Although there is a general belief that orthodontic treatment improves facial appearance, this has yet not been systematically evaluated.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the current evidence on the effect of orthodontic treatment on facial attractiveness.
SEARCH METHODS: Systematic and unrestricted search of nine databases were performed up to January 2022.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Studies evaluating facial attractiveness before and after orthodontic trea

Orthognathic surgery to treat dentofacial discrepancies has become an increasingly common elective procedure in sur-gical practices. Despite its numerous advantages such as improved aesthetics and masticatory and respiratory function, some complications and unfavorable results can be observed. Pseudoarthrosis after orthognathic surgery is a rare complication and is little reported in the literature. Pseudoarthrosis is characterized by an increasing occlusal worsening associated with bone mobility and pain. Due to the low incidence of pseudoarthrosis, it is necessary to study its involvement to

BACKGROUND: Patients with dentofacial anomalies may undergo orthognathic surgery to address functional and aesthetic concerns. Past works have evaluated determinants affecting length of stay (LOS) in patients undergoing upper and/or lower jaw surgery alone. No studies have assessed the addition of genioplasty to double-jaw (Lefort I, bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO))) surgery and its effect on LOS and other outcomes. This study investigates whether the addition of genioplasty incurs additional morbidity to patients undergoing complex orthognathic surgery.
METHODS: This was a retrospe
