Advances in myopia control strategies for children.

Myopia has long been a global threat to public health. Timely interventions are likely to reduce the risk of vision-threatening complications. There are both established and rapidly evolving therapeutic approaches to slow myopia progression and/or delay its onset. The effective methods for slowing myopia progression include atropine eye-drops, defocus incorporated multiple segments (DIMS) spectacle lenses, spectacle lenses with highly aspherical lenslets target (HALT), diffusion optics technology (DOT) spectacle lenses, red light therapy (RLT), multifocal soft contact lenses and orthokeratolog

Efficacy of the Euclid orthokeratology lens in slowing axial elongation.

PURPOSE: The Euclid Emerald lens designs for orthokeratology have been available in global markets for over 20 years and is used extensively by clinicians for slowing myopia progression in children. This paper comprehensively reviews data from published studies of the efficacy of this lens. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic search was performed in March 2023 using Medline with the following search terms: orthokeratology AND myopi* AND (axial or elong*) NOT (review or meta). RESULTS: The original search identified 189 articles, of which 140 reported axial elongation. Of those, 49 reported d

Biometric factors and orthokeratology lens parameters can influence the treatment zone diameter on corneal topography in Corneal Refractive Therapy lens wearers.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between patients' baseline biometric factors or lens parameters and the diameter of the treatment zone in young myopic children undergoing Corneal Refractive Therapy. METHODS: The data of patients undergoing Corneal Refractive Therapy lens treatment within two years were retrospectively reviewed. Baseline clinical data, including sex, age, refractive power, corneal topography readings, ocular optical biometric measurements, and Corneal Refractive Therapy lens parameters, were subjected to Pearson, Spearman, and partial correlation analyses to identify

The treatment zone decentration and corneal refractive profile changes in children undergoing orthokeratology treatment.

BACKGROUND: To confirm the association between treatment-zone (TZ) decentration and axial length growth (ALG) in children who underwent orthokeratology; and to explore the association between TZ decentration and relative corneal refractive power (RCRP) profile, which was known to be significantly associated with ALG retardation. METHODS: Four hundred myopic children of age 12 years participated in the study, with 200 wearing orthokeratology lenses and the other 200 wearing single-vision spectacle as the controls. Cycloplegic refraction was performed at baseline. Axial length was measured at b

[Adjustment of contact lens parameters to improve insufficient sagittal height for treatment of corneal injury: a case report].

A 14-year-old female patient presented to the Department of Ophthalmology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiangnan University with a 3-year history of blurred vision while wearing single-vision spectacles for bilateral myopia. The patient demonstrated satisfactory corrected visual acuity, rapid myopia progression, no manifest strabismus, and well-preserved fusional function and stereopsis; therefore, orthokeratology was administered. Grade 2 central corneal staining developed at one month. Lens parameters were adjusted to optimize the fitting: the power of the alignment curve was reduced by

SWOT analysis of ortho-K practice in India.

PURPOSE: Orthokeratology (ortho-K) has been well established as a methodology for myopia correction and control its progression. A SWOT analysis serves as a strategic planning tool for intervention hence the purpose of this study to establish and implement ortho-K practice in India. METHOD: The study was conducted between December 2020 and June 2021. A prospective questionnaire-based study was conducted to elicit the responses in the SWOT study. Based on focus group discussion a set of five statements under strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats were identified. These were closed en

Factors Associated With Follow-Up Visits in Parents With Myopic Children Wearing Orthokeratology Lens.

BACKGROUND: Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) is an effective method for slowing the progression of myopia and correcting refractive error in school children. Although parents of children aged < 10 years play a major role in Ortho-k lens care, they have a generally low level of compliance in performing regular follow-up visits. PURPOSE: This study was developed to analyze the associations between follow-up visits by parents of Ortho-k lens wearers aged < 10 years and, respectively, the Ortho-k-related knowledge of these parents and information resources promoting Ortho-k use. METHODS: A cross-sectio

The relationship between baseline axial length and axial elongation in myopic children undergoing orthokeratology.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between the baseline axial length (AL) and axial elongation in myopes undergoing orthokeratology (ortho-k). METHODS: This was a retrospective study. During the 1-year follow-up, 1176 children (aged 8-14 years) were included and divided into an ortho-k group (n = 588) and a single-vision spectacle group (n = 588). The ortho-k group participants (8-11 years of age) who completed the 3-year follow-up (n = 150) were further divided into three subgroups stratified by their baseline AL: subgroup 1 (AL < 24.5 mm), subgroup 2 (24.5 ≤ AL < 26 mm) and subgroup 3

[The flexure of on-eye rigid gas permeable contact lenses and its relationship with anterior corneal surface].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of corneal irregularity on on-eye rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses and the corneal shape changed by RGP contact lenses. METHODS: Corneal topography was taken for 42 bare eyes of 22 subjects before and 1 month after wearing of the RGP contact lens. Off-eye and on-eye wavefront aberrations of the anterior surface of the RGP contact lens were also measured by corneal topography for the same 42 eyes. Zernike aberrations of the RGP contact lens were examined and compared to those of baseline anterior corneal surface. RESULTS: For bare eyes, C4, C5, C7

Bilateral microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in an orthokeratology lens wearer: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis is a rare but serious ocular infection that can occur in contact lens wearers, particularly in individuals exposed to certain environmental or behavioral risk factors. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial to ensure effective treatment and prevent long-term complications. This report presents a case of bilateral microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in a pediatric patient who wore orthokeratology lenses, accompanied by a review of relevant literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old female presented with bilateral eye redness and a persistent fo

Exploring the impact of optical corrections on visual functions in myopia control-a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Myopia is controlled optically with peripheral defocus spectacles, multifocal contact lenses, or orthokeratology lenses. However, it is unknown which optical correction will improve visual performance. This scoping review aimed to identify and summarize studies on various visual functions using optical corrections for myopia control. METHODS: To develop the search strategy, population (Myopia), concept (visual performance), and context (unrestricted race/region) were used. PubMed, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched using the keywords myopia, contrast

The effects of base curve aspheric orthokeratology lenses on corneal topography and peripheral refraction: A randomized prospective trial.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effects of orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses with aspheric and spherical base curve designs on corneal refractive power (CRP) and peripheral refraction. METHODS: Children aged 8 to 12 years with myopia between -0.75 D to -4.00 D, astigmatism ≤1.00 D, and corneal astigmatism ≤1.50 D were randomly assigned to the base curve aspheric (BCA) and base curve spherical (BCS) ortho-k lens groups. CRP was assessed for the central 8 mm cornea along horizontal and vertical meridians, and peripheral refraction was measured at 10°, 20°, and 30° along the nasal and temporal ret
