Monograph of the Afrotropical species of Scelio Latreille (Hymenoptera, Platygastridae), egg parasitoids of acridid grasshoppers (Orthoptera, Acrididae).

The genus Scelio is a cosmopolitan and speciose group of solitary parasitoids of the eggs of short-horned grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae). A number of these hosts are important pests, including plague locusts of the genus Schistocerca. Species of Scelio are recognized as potentially important biological control agents, but this possibility has yet to be fully realized, in part because the species-level taxonomy is still incompletely developed. The species of the pulchripennis group have been recently revised. As a continuation of this effort, here we revise the Afrotropical species of Sce

Heterochromatin heterogeneity and rapid divergence of the sex chromosomes in Chorthippus parallelus parallelus and C. p. erythropus (Orthoptera).

Mitotic chromosomes from individuals of a Pyrenean hybrid zone between two subspecies of the grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus have been pretreated as for C-banding and subsequently stained with 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and (or) Chromomycin A3 (CMA). The results, which are different from those obtained with Giemsa C-banding or standard DAPI - CMA treatments show (i) hidden heterochromatic heterogeneity that may be correlated with the existence of distinct families of repetitive DNAs, (ii) information about the possible independent origin of the three detected types of heterochromat

The effects of reduced agent-area insecticide treatments for rangeland grasshopper (Orthoptera: Acrididae) control on bird densities.

The effects of insecticidal control programs for grasshoppers on the population density of birds were assessed under operational conditions in two rangeland sites in Wyoming during an outbreak (19 to 56 grasshoppers m(-2) on >1,500 ha). Malathion, carbaryl, and fipronil were evaluated using large-scale (>/=260 ha) reduced agent-area treatments (RAAT), in which these chemicals were applied at 50% of the standard rate (except fipronil, for which there is no standard in North America) to 80, 50, and 33% of the areas (alternating treated and untreated swaths), respectively. Grasshopper population

Study of four Neotropical species of tree crickets Oecanthus Serville, 1831 (Orthoptera, Gryllidae) using cytogenetic and molecular markers.

Karyotypes in the worldwide subfamily Oecanthinae show variations in diploid number, chromosome morphology, and sex-chromosome system. This study described the chromosome set and phylogenetic relationships of four Neotropical species, Oecanthus lineolatus, O. valensis, O. pallidus, and O. pictus. We used classical cytogenetics and Bayesian Inference for phylogenetic reconstruction, using the mitochondrial genes COI, 12S rRNA, and 16S rRNA; and analyzed the phylogenetic patterns of changes in chromosome numbers, using ChromEvol. We observed differences in chromosome number among species and two

[A morphofunctional analysis of the hemocytes in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) normally and in acute microsporidiosis due to Nosema grylli].

Microsporidians (M) are supposed to be ancient eukaryotic parasites with a broad range of animal hosts, being especially abundant in Arthropoda. They are supposed to pass a long way of adaptation to parasitism, that usually means inhibiting or avoiding host immune reactions alongside with the reduction of pathogenicity. However M, unlike other eukaryotic obligate parasites, preserved a high pathogenicity, comparable with one of viruses, and thus they could be expected to possess a unique mode of interactions with their hosts. The goal of the present work is to assess how M influence the cellul

Comparison of Leg Regeneration Potency Between Holometabolous Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Hemimetabolous Locusta migratoria manilensis (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

After injury many insects could regenerate lost limb. In this study, Helicoverpa armigera Hubner and Locusta migratoria manilensis (Meyen, 1835) were chosen to compare the regeneration potency of holometabolous and hemimetabolous insects. We employed the classical approach of surgical excision to verify the regeneration ability and to investigate the factors that affect the extent of regeneration. The results found that H. armigera could regenerate intact legs when the larval legs were excised at the first and second instar and that legs of adult H. armigera had a close relationship with their

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Mormon cricket (Anabrus simplex: Tettigoniidae: Orthoptera) and an analysis of control region variability.

The Anabrus simplex is a swarming plague orthopteran found in western North America. The genome is 15 766 bp in length and genome organization follows the ancestral insect gene arrangement. atp6 lacked any readily identifiable stop codon. Examination of mRNA secondary structure for this gene suggested a stem/loop-mediated mRNA post-transcriptional processing to liberate a mature atp6 mRNA with a complete stop codon produced by polyadenylation. Comparison of similar protein with protein gene boundaries in other insect species reveal a general mechanism for mRNA excision and provide further supp

A novel multiple sex chromosome system in Orthoptera, found in the tree cricket Oecanthus rubromaculatus Zefa, 2022 (Grylloidea, Oecanthidae).

The X0♂/XX♀ sex chromosome system prevails in most Orthopteran species. The X chromosome stands as one of the largest chromosomes within the complement, and is characterized by its heterochromatic nature. Variations of this model were found in some species of grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids, based on X/autosome rearrangements, giving rise to new sex chromosome systems, such as neo-XY♂/XX♀ and neo-X1X2Y♂/X1X1X2X2♀. The sex chromosome system neo-X1X20♂/X1X1X2X2♀ is rare in Orthoptera, and was observed only in two cricket species. In this study, we present the first multiple chiasmatic sex c

Do Mediterranean crickets Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) come from the Mediterranean? Largescale phylogeography and regional gene flow.

We investigate the degree of between-population genetic differentiation in the Mediterranean field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus, as well as the possible causes of such differentiation. Using cytochrome b mtDNA sequences, we estimate genetic variation in G. bimaculatus from seven South African and two Mediterranean populations. Within-population genetic variation in Europe (two haplotypes, one unique to a single individual) suggest low effective population size and strong bottlenecks with associated founder effects, probably due to cold winter environments in Europe that limit reproduction to a

Review of song patterns and sound production in armoured ground crickets (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Hetrodini) with karyological data and taxonomic notes.

In the mate finding system of bush-crickets, acoustical signals play a central role. Here we review and describe the bioacoustics of Hetrodini, a morphologically uniform group of Tettigonioidea with a distribution centered in Africa. The male calling songs are produced by tegmino-tegminal stridulation. In all species, these fore wings are completely covered by the pronotum (invisible in intact specimens) and lack the glossy mirror cells which are well-known from many other singing Ensifera. Concerning spectral composition, the broad frequency peak and the parts with the most energy lie in the

Insights into spermatogenesis in the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria (Linnaeus, 1758) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), following histological and ultrastructural features of the testis.

The migratory locust, Locusta migratoria (Linnaeus, 1758), is one of the most destructive agricultural pests globally, and this species is particularly localized in several regions of Egypt. However, so far, very little attention has been paid to the characteristics of the testes. Furthermore, spermatogenesis requires careful analysis to characterize and track developmental episodes. We thus investigated, for the first time, the histological and ultrastructural properties of the testis in L. migratoria employing a light microscope, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a transmission elect

Effect of dietary cadmium on the activity of glutathione S-transferase and carboxylesterase in different developmental stages of the Oxya chinensis (Orthoptera: Acridoidea).

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and carboxylesterases (CarEs) play important roles in the detoxification of endogenous and exogenous compounds. In this study, the biochemical effects of dietary cadmium (Cd) on the activities of GST and CarE in different developmental stages of the rice grasshopper Oxya chinensis Thunberg were studied. The results showed that the effects of the Cd concentration and developmental stage on GST activity were statistically significant. GST activity in O. chinensis increased at the highest Cd concentration in most nymphs, suggesting that GST is typically inducible

First insights into histological and ultrastructural organization of midgut and Malpighian tubules in mole crickets Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa Linnaeus, 1758 (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae).

Despite the economic crises caused by the mole cricket, Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa, as a critical agricultural pest, the detailed structural organization of its digestive and excretory systems has not yet been studied. In this work, we probed, for the first time, the structural organization of the gastric caeca, the anterior segment of the hindgut, and the Malpighian tubules of G. gryllotalpa collected from Egypt using light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. Histological analysis substantiated the macroscopic morphological observations of the midgut of G. gryllotalpa to be confined

Revision of the Pygmy Cricket genus Homonemobius Chopard, 1935, with description of a new species using integrative taxonomy (Orthoptera: Trigonidiidae; Nemobiinae).

In this study, a systematic revision of the species of the genus Homonemobius in China was carried out using an integrative taxonomic approach, including the accounts of four known species and one new species, H. brevititilana sp. nov. The genus can be characterized by small body, similar vein structures between sexes, absence of stridulatory veins and lack of tympanum on the anterior tibiae. The new species, H. brevititilana sp. nov., can be distinguished from its congeners by four yellow stripes on the occiput, yellow spots on the pronotum and abdomen, and five regular longitudinal veins in

Histological and ultrastructural changes in the mid gut of desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Orthoptera: Acrididae) treated with zinc chromium oxide nanocomb.

A low-cost chemical co-precipitation method was used to prepare chromium zinc oxide (Cr/ZnO) nanocombs. The structural, elemental composition, and morphological architectures of the nanocomposite were characterized using XRD, EDX, XPS, and SEM techniques. The analysis confirmed the incorporation of Cr3⁺ into the ZnO framework to form a homogenous nanocomb structure. The Cr/ZnO nanocombs exhibited small particle size, large surface area, and high aspect ratio, which are beneficial for numerous biological fields.
