Attitudes toward orthorexia nervosa relative to DSM-5 eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: A pattern of disordered eating involving a pathological fixation with healthy food consumption, labeled orthorexia nervosa (ON), has recently generated attention; however, research has not yet investigated perceptions of ON-related behaviors. This study examined potential stigmatization of ON, compared with DSM-5 ED diagnoses. METHOD: Participants (N = 505) were randomly assigned to read a vignette depicting a woman with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge-eating disorder (BED), or ON. They then answered questions about the individual depicted in the vignette. A seri

Exercise dependence and orthorexia nervosa in Crossfit: exploring the role of perfectionism.

Sustainable employability (SE) is an important topic as it deals with employees' abilities to function adequately at work and in the labor market throughout their working lives. However, until now there has been only one attempt to define SE in the international literature (1). This first definition is a valuable contribution to the field as it rightfully describes SE as a multidimensional concept, recognizes the importance of both employee and work characteristics, and acknowledges the inherently longitudinal nature of SE. Despite these merits, we argue that this definition of SE has some ser

Definition and diagnostic criteria for orthorexia nervosa: a narrative review of the literature.

AIM: In some cases, detrimental consequences on health are generated by self-imposed dietary rules intended to promote health. The pursuit of an "extreme dietary purity" due to an exaggerated focus on food may lead to a disordered eating behavior called "orthorexia nervosa" (ON). ON raises a growing interest, but at present there is no universally shared definition of ON, the diagnostic criteria are under debate, and the psychometric instruments used in the literature revealed some flaws. This narrative review of the literature aims at assessing state of the art in ON definition, diagnostic cr

Relationship between disgust and orthorexia nervosa and psychometric properties of the Italian Dusseldorf orthorexia scale in a general population sample.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear among clinicians and researchers whether orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a part of the obsessive-compulsive disorder spectrum or eating disorders. Disgust seems to be a shared psychopathological factor in these clinical presentations, indicating a potentially crucial role in ON. On the other hand, numerous psychometric tools have been developed to evaluate ON. The Dusseldorf Orthorexia Scale (DOS) was recently validated in an Italian sample. However, the study's primary limitation was that the scale was only administered to undergraduate university students. This stud

Psychometric evaluation of the French version of the Düsseldorfer Orthorexia Skala (DOS) and prevalence of orthorexia nervosa among university students.

PURPOSE: This study aimed at obtaining a French version of the DOS (F-DOS) and evaluating its psychometric properties in a sample of university students, then assessing the prevalence of orthorexic eating behavior among the participants. METHODS: The F-DOS was obtained using back translation, and then administered to 3235 university students (10.32% men, 89.67% women) with a mean age of 21.13 (SD = 2.23). The Eating Habits Questionnaire and Eating Attitudes Test were used to assess convergent and divergent validities, respectively. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to explore the fac

The risk of believing that emotions are bad and uncontrollable: association with orthorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore emotional functioning in individuals with varying levels of orthorexia nervosa (ON) symptoms. Given the established links between emotion dysregulation and other eating disorders (EDs), and the conceptualization of ON within the ED spectrum, this research sought to examine the relationships between ON symptomatology and emotion regulation strategies, alexithymia, and beliefs about emotions. METHODS: A large sample (N = 562) completed self-report measures with high psychometric properties, assessing ON traits (E-DOS), emotion regulation strategies (DERS-SF

Orthorexia nervosa and eating disorder behaviors: A systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) involves obsessive thoughts about healthy eating and distress related to this obsession. There is still dispute over whether ON should be considered on the obsessive-compulsive spectrum, the eating disorder (ED) spectrum, or as its own disorder. Based on current research, orthorexic behaviors seem to be closely related to eating disorder behaviors. However, given the range of instruments used to measure ED and ON, and the lack of consistency in the specific ED domains explored, a review of the current literature is warranted. OBJECTIVE: The objective of thi

Orthorexia nervosa and dieting in a non-clinical sample: a prospective study.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is characterised by excessive attention to a dietary regimen perceived as healthy. A critical factor in the distinction between ON and other eating disorders (EDs) is the dichotomy of quality-versus-quantity of food intake. We investigated whether specific types of diet or dieting frequency are associated with orthorexic features, explored the overlap between ON and EDs symptoms, and examined which constructs are predictive of ON after 6 months. METHODS: A total of 1075 students (75.1% female, mean age 20.9) completed a set of questionnaires assessing Orthorex

Prevalence and characteristics of orthorexia nervosa in a sample of university students in Italy.

AIMS: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) has been recently defined as a pathological approach to feeding related to healthiness concerns and purity of food and/or feeding habits. This condition recently showed an increasing prevalence particularly among young adults. In order to investigate the prevalence of ON and its relationship with gender and nutritional style among young adults, we explored a sample of students from the University of Pisa, Italy. METHODS: Assessments included the ORTO-15 questionnaire and a socio-demographic and eating habits form. Subjects were dichotomized for eating habits (i.e

Individual and contextual factors associated with orthorexia nervosa tendency during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) refers to a pattern of excessive preoccupation with healthy eating rather than an established clinical diagnosis. Interest in orthorexia-related eating attitudes has increased during pregnancy, a period characterized by heightened nutritional awareness and health-related responsibility. However, evidence regarding the psychosocial, behavioral, and contextual factors associated with such eating attitudes in pregnant women remains limited. This study aimed to examine individual and contextual psychosocial and behavioral factors associated with orthorexia-relat

The prevalence of orthorexia nervosa among eating disorder patients after treatment.

BACKGROUND: The pursuit for healthy food consumption is considered a laudable habit. This attitude can turn into pathological when cognitions and worries about healthy nutrition lead to such an accurate food selection that correct diet becomes the most important part of one's own life leading to important dietary restrictions, stereotyped eating or impairment in important areas of functioning. This behaviour is coined orthorexia nervosa (ON) and can share common characteristics with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). The purpose of the present study was to examine the frequency of

Historical evolution of the concept of anorexia nervosa and relationships with orthorexia nervosa, autism, and obsessive-compulsive spectrum.

Eating disorders have been defined as "characterized by persistence disturbance of eating or eating-related behavior that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food and that significantly impairs health or psychosocial functioning". The psychopathology of eating disorders changed across time under the influence of environmental factors, determining the emergence of new phenotypes. Some of these conditions are still under investigation and are not clearly identified as independent diagnostic entities. In this review, the historic evolution of the eating disorder concept up to the

Orthorexia Nervosa Risk and Psychological Correlates in Higher-Education Dance Students.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa has been increasingly examined in performance-oriented populations; however, evidence in higher-education dance students remains limited, particularly across multiple dance disciplines and with integrated psychological assessment. OBJECTIVE: To examine orthorexia nervosa distribution among higher-education dance students across 4 disciplines (classical dance, contemporary, flamenco, and Spanish dance) and to analyse its association with psychological distress and body dissatisfaction. The interrelationship between orthorexia nervosa, perfectionism, body image and attachment style.

PURPOSE: We investigated whether perfectionism, body image, attachment style, and self-esteem are predictors of orthorexia nervosa. METHODS: A cohort of 220 participants completed a self-administered, online questionnaire consisting of five measures: ORTO-15, the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS), the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS), the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ), and Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Orthorexia nervosa versus anorexia nervosa: Comparison of diagnostic and behavioral features in at-risk young adults.

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) has garnered increasing attention as a potential diagnostic entity, yet its nosological status remains unresolved. Given overlapping features between ON and anorexia nervosa (AN)/atypical AN, this study examined the extent to which consensus-based ON diagnostic criteria and distinguishing features of AN/atypical AN were endorsed by college students at risk for one, both, or neither syndrome. Participants (N = 916; 72.5% cisgender women; 73.9% Non-Latino) completed an online survey assessing ON symptoms, AN/atypical AN risk, and related clinical and behavioral features.

Exploration of orthorexia nervosa and diagnostic overlap with eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is characterized as obsessional healthy eating that results in malnutrition and/or psychosocial impairment. Yet, ON shares theoretical overlap with eating disorders (EDs), especially anorexia nervosa (AN), as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This study aimed to further understand ON and its overlap with related disorders by assessing the ability of ON for detecting the presence/absence of threshold ED, AN, and OCD symptoms. METHOD: An observational survey was completed by 197 participants recruited through eating disorder, dieting, and mental hea

"When Are We Going to Hold Orthorexia to the Same Standard as Anorexia and Bulimia?" Exploring the Medicalization Process of Orthorexia Nervosa on Twitter.

This study contributes to understanding medicalization on social media, by using Conrad's concept of medicalization as a theoretical framework to explore the conversation about Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) on Twitter. The aim of this mixed-methods study was twofold: the quantitative component aimed to provide descriptive information on the type of tweets and users, as well as on the network structure of the ON-related conversation on Twitter, while the qualitative component aimed to explore how the medicalization of ON unfolds on Twitter by performing a thematic analysis of original tweets about ON

Determining the relationship between Orthorexia Nervosa risk and body image in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a process that involves social, psychological, and physical changes which may be a turning point for improvement or onset/relapse of eating disorders. Studies conducted have emphasized that, in addition to classical eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa), new types (e.g., orthorexia nervosa) and subclinical disorders are also seen in pregnant women. Based on this information, this is a descriptive study that was carried out to determine the relationship between the risk of orthorexia in pregnant women and body image. MATERIAL-METHOD: The study include
