A systematic review and narrative synthesis of footwear and orthotic devices used in the management of ankle haemarthrosis and haemarthropathy in haemophilia.

INTRODUCTION: Haemarthrosis is a clinical feature of haemophilia leading to haemarthropathy. The ankle joint is most commonly affected, resulting in significant pain, disability and a reduction in health-related quality of life. Footwear and orthotic devices are effective in other diseases that affect the foot and ankle, such as rheumatoid arthritis, but little is known about their effect in haemophilia. AIMS: To review the efficacy and effectiveness of footwear and orthotic devices in the management of ankle joint haemarthrosis and haemarthropathy in haemophilia. METHODS: A systematic liter

The stabilizing effect of orthotic devices on plantar flexion/dorsal extension and horizontal rotation of the ankle joint. An experimental cadaveric investigation.

The mechanical stabilizing effect of nine different orthotic devices on physiological and pathological plantar flexion/dorsal extension and horizontal rotation of the ankle joint subjected to artificial lateral ligament lesions was investigated in 20 cadaveric ankle joints under standardized conditions using an experimental apparatus. All of the braces tested significantly reduced plantar flexion/dorsal extension, as well as internal/external/external horizontal rotation, under the experimental conditions. In so far as these results can be transposed into a clinical setting, our data favour th

Compliance with prescriptions for wheelchairs, walking aids, orthotics, and pressure-relieving devices in patients with traumatic spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: The use of adaptive equipment (AE) is the basic indication for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Inappropriate decisions concerning the use of AE imply treatment results, patient confidence, and patient and state costs. The present study is the first analysis of the causes of non-compliance conducted in Europe with the provision of AE in SCI patients using Wielandt and Strong's classification. AIM: The aim of this study is to analyze of the causes of non-compliance in the process of providing AE to SCI patients. DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. SETTING: "STOCER"

Gait analysis in a patient with severe Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: a case study with a new orthotic device for footdrop.

Management of footdrop in severe Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) patients is a challenge owing to the combination of quadriceps muscle weakness, distal muscular atrophy, sensory impairment and poor soft tissue resistance to the placement of an orthotic device. We present a case study of a patient who gradually became unable to use his ankle-foot orthoses because they hampered the compensative movements required to stabilize his knees passively and caused pain. The aim of this report is to describe orthotic management in such a severe CMT case and to present a new orthotic device that we devised for

Investigating the orthotic effect of a passive gravity-compensated exoskeletal device on upper-limb function in people with multiple sclerosis: a pilot cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disorder causing lower and upper-limb (UL) impairments and significantly affecting independence. Current assistive technologies for UL rehabilitation in People with MS (PwMS) rely on actuated robotic systems, which present high costs and complexity. Passive gravity-compensated exoskeletons represent a promising alternative; however, their functional benefits remain underexplored. This study aimed to redesign and evaluate the orthotic effect of a passive gravity-compensated exoskeleton device in supporting upper-limb function in PwMS.

Orthotic correction of postural unleveling in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis.

The authors describe the case of a patient with ankylosing spondylitis who was treated with orthotic devices for postural unleveling. The patient described specific pre-existing postural problems, both static and dynamic, that had been present for many years. A unilateral 9-mm gel heel lift was used, followed by custom-molded orthotic devices that incorporated the heel lift. The patient reported immediate resolution of these symptoms after orthotic treatment, as well as increased functionality and satisfaction in activities of daily living, which coincided with the leveling of his posture. Counterforce Orthosis In The Management Of Lateral Epicondylitis.

BACKGROUND: Lateral Epicondylitis (LE), is a condition characterized by the pain and tenderness over the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. LE is commonly seen among people who are involved in sports such as tennis and golf. Any activity that repeatedly overstrains the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon can lead to LE. The management of lateral epicondylitis generally involves the use of counterforce orthosis. The aim of this review is to summarize the evidence regarding the effectiveness of counterforce orthoses on the clinical outcomes of patients with lateral epicondylitis. METHODS: The

Nonsurgical, nonorthotic treatment of occipital plagiocephaly: what is the natural history of the misshapen neonatal head?

Management of neonates with nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly has been controversial, and there has been a lack of uniformity concerning its treatment. Patients with nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly have been treated surgically or with cranial remodeling orthotic devices and have shown improvement in asymmetry. The cost of orthotic treatment has risen, and its validity has been contested by many third-party insurance payers. The effectiveness of orthotic treatment has not been adequately compared to the natural history of nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly. A nonsurgical, nonorthot
