Variation in urine composition in the human urinary tract: evidence of urothelial function in situ?

PURPOSE: An increased awareness of the concept that the urothelium has a significant transport function led us to question whether urine composition changes as it passes along the human lower urinary tract. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Urine samples from the bladder and renal pelvis were collected from 30 adults who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (27) or ureteral stent insertion before lithotripsy (3). Urine was obtained from the 2 renal pelves (operative and contralateral sides) in 6 patients (24%). Urine pH was measured using an ultra-thin glass pH electrode. Urinary osmolality, Na and K

[New approaches to the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca].

UNLABELLED: A new method has been developed for the treatment of severe forms of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) that involves the use of an original cyclosporine A (CyA) saturated soft contact lens (SCL) together with preservative-free artificial tears therapy. AIM: to evaluate the effectiveness of the newly developed treatment for KCS based on the use of medical SCL saturated with 0.05% CyA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients (43 men, 60 eyes) with severe KCS were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 included 21 patients (30 eyes), who received artificial tears and wore 0.05% CyA-saturated sili

Prospective controlled study of vapor pressure tear osmolality and tear meniscus height in nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

PURPOSE: To determine tear osmolality (TO) and tear meniscus height (TMH) in patients with functional (FNLDO) and primary acquired (PANDO) nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Additionally, to determine the effect of successful dacryocystorhinostomy surgery on these tear parameters. DESIGN: Prospective case-controlled interventional case series. METHODS: Up to 20 microl of basal tears were collected from 20 age- and gender-matched control subjects, 33 patients with FNLDO, 28 patients with PANDO, and 31 patients after successful dacryocystorhinostomy. TMH was measured with videoreflective dacryomen

Validation of the portable MX3 hydration testing system for measuring saliva osmolality.

Saliva, specifically salivary osmolality, has gained increasing interest as a non-invasive hydration marker providing rapid results that can be easily obtained in a field setting. However, it is unclear as to whether commercially available hydration devices can accurately measure salivary osmolality. Thus, this study assessed the validity of the MX3 Portable Hydration device against a laboratory-grade freezing-point depression benchtop osmometer (i.e., criterion measure). A total of eight saliva samples were collected from 10 male participants (total saliva samples, n = 80; age, 25 ± 5 y; mass

Osmolarity of prevalent eye drops, side effects, and therapeutic approaches.

PURPOSE: Little is known about how the osmolarity of ophthalmic formulations affects the ocular surface. Because hyperosmolar eye drops could be therapeutic for treating corneal edema, this article presents an ex vivo model of corneal edema for testing ophthalmic drugs based on their osmolarity. The respective osmolarity of common eye drops found in the German market is also analyzed here. METHODS: For modeling corneal edema, an Ex Vivo Eye Irritation Test was used to simulate an ocular anterior chamber with a physiological corneal barrier. To induce corneal edema, the anterior chamber was su

Utility of Tear Osmolarity Measurement in Diagnosis of Dry Eye Disease.

The prevalence of dry eye disease is high worldwide and poses a great burden on patients' daily lives. Accurate diagnosis of the disease is important, and it requires application of various methods. Hyperosmolarity is believed to be the disease marker and thus measuring it provides useful information. In this study we investigated utility of tear osmolarity measured with TearLab osmometer, along with other diagnostic tests (Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire, Tear film break-up time, Ocular Protection Index, Ocular Surface Staining, Schirmer I test, Meibomian gland functionality in 757

The role of obesity in the relation between total water intake and urine osmolality in US adults, 2009-2012.

BACKGROUND: Adequate water intake is critical to physiologic and cognitive functioning. Although water requirements increase with body size, it remains unclear whether weight status modifies the relation between water intake and hydration status. OBJECTIVE: We examined how the association between water intake and urine osmolality, which is a hydration biomarker, varied by weight status. DESIGN: NHANES cross-sectional data (2009-2012) were analyzed in 9601 nonpregnant adults aged ≥20 y who did not have kidney failure. Weight status was categorized with the use of body mass index on the basis

Effects of left atrial receptor stimulation on carotid chemoreceptor-induced renal responses in dogs.

1. Dogs were anaesthetized with thiopentone sodium and alpha-chloralose and artificially ventilated. The carotid sinus regions were vascularly isolated and perfused with arterial or venous blood to stimulate the chemoreceptors. Left atrial receptors were stimulated by distending four balloons, three in the left pulmonary vein-atrial junctions and one in the left atrial appendage. Mean aortic pressure was held constant by means of a pressure control device. Atenolol and atropine (2.0 and 0.5 mg kg-1, respectively), and gallamine triethiodide (3.0 mg kg-1 h-1) were given I.V. Renal blood flow wa

The effects of stimulating carotid chemoreceptors on renal haemodynamics and function in dogs.

1. Dogs were anaesthetized with chloralose and artificially ventilated. The carotid chemoreceptors were stimulated by changing the perfusion of vascularly isolated carotid sinus regions from arterial to venous blood. The mean carotid sinus pressure and the mean arterial blood pressure were held constant at 124 +/- 3 and 122 +/- 3 mmHg, respectively. Both vagosympathetic trunks were sectioned in the neck and propranolol (17 micrograms kg-1 min-1 I.V.) and gallamine triethiodide (0.2-2.0 mg kg-1 30 min-1 I.V.) were infused. Renal blood flow was measured by an electromagnetic flow probe, glomerul

Molecular and physical technologies for monitoring fluid and electrolyte imbalance: A focus on cancer population.

Several clinical examinations have shown the essential impact of monitoring (de)hydration (fluid and electrolyte imbalance) in cancer patients. There are multiple risk factors associated with (de)hydration, including aging, excessive or lack of fluid consumption in sports, alcohol consumption, hot weather, diabetes insipidus, vomiting, diarrhea, cancer, radiation, chemotherapy, and use of diuretics. Fluid and electrolyte imbalance mainly involves alterations in the levels of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in extracellular fluids. Hyponatremia is a common condition among individuals
