Pachydermodactyly (PDD) is a rare, benign disease associated with progressive swelling of the periarticular soft tissue of phalangeal hand joints typically treated with local steroid injections. We present a case of a 37-year-old man with PDD treated with local steroid injections. He later developed heterotopic ossification and para-articular calcifications in the injection sites. Heterotopic ossification is not associated with PDD nor is it a recognised complication of local steroid injections. This is the first case in literature of heterotopic ossification occurring after local steroid inje

Background Heterotopic Ossification (HO) is a common condition referring to ectopic bone formation in soft tissues. It has two major etiologies, acquired (more common) and genetic. The acquired form is closely related to tissue trauma. The exact pathogenesis of this disease remains unclear; however, there is ongoing research in prophylactic and therapeutic treatments that is promising. Conclusions Due to HO potential to cause disability, it is so important to differentiate it from other causes in order to establish the best possible management.

Heterotopic ossification (HO), a serious disorder of extra-skeletal bone formation, occurs as a common complication of trauma or in rare genetic disorders. Many conserved signaling pathways have been implicated in HO; however, the exact underlying molecular mechanisms for many forms of HO are still unclear. The emerging picture is that dysregulation of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling plays a central role in the process, but that other conserved signaling pathways, such as Hedgehog (HH), Wnt/β-catenin and Fibroblast growth factors (FGF), are also involved, either through cross-talk w

The incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and its effect on the postoperative range of motion (ROM) were assessed in 63 primary TKAs. Twenty-five of 63 knees (39%) showed postoperative HO, most of which were found in the region anterior to the distal femur. The incidence of HO was significantly higher (P <.05) in the osteoarthritic knees than in the rheumatoid knees. Significant positive correlation was seen between the preoperative grade of osteophyte formation and the incidence of postoperative HO. The ROM in the knees with HO was not significantly di

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is abnormal bone deposition, most commonly in the hip or elbow, that can significantly impair patients due to pain, stiffness, and contractures, which prevents them from carrying out activities of daily living. A traumatic brain (TBI) or spinal cord injury may prompt the formation of heterotopic ossification, creating so-called neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO). The pathophysiology of this condition is not fully understood, but probably involves a complex interplay between a biological scaffold of demineralized bone, CNS signaling, and local tissue signal

In elbow stiffness, pre-operative assessments should identify the articular and peri-articular tissues involved and, more specifically, they should determine how preserved the articular surfaces and osteo-articular congruity are. We will focus on the most important conditions and tissue reactions after trauma in order to understand the causes of joint stiffness. A logical surgical planning is based upon a deep knowledge of the anatomical obstacles and of the associated lesions that the trauma provoked with. The peri-articular soft tissue contractures. The osteo-articular incongruity.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) histologically refers to extraskeletal bone formation in non-ossifying tissues, most commonly noted in the extremities, buttocks, abdominal wall, and hip joints. HO developing in the mesentery (heterotopic mesenteric ossification, HMO) is very rare, with fewer than 100 cases reported in the literature. It usually occurs in adult male patients with a history of repeated abdominal trauma. So far, only two cases of HMO have been reported with the development of hematopoietic bone marrow. Here, we report the third case of HMO with true trilineage hematopoiesis in a 66

Neurogenic heterotopic ossification is a condition whereby bone forms in an extra-skeletal site. It may occur in the context of major neurological insult involving the brain or spinal cord. It causes pain and restricts movement, most commonly at the hip joints. Although neurogenic heterotopic ossification is associated with significant morbidity, the diagnosis is not always considered when referring for imaging in susceptible individuals. This article highlights its key features to promote better awareness and recognition, by reviewing clinical findings and imaging of patients across various m

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the abnormal growth of extraskeletal bone. Joint involvement may result in chronic stiffness and pain causing considerable functional impairment and the inability to perform the activities of daily living. HO affecting the shoulder joint is rare and little is known about its clinical course or treatment. Here, we describe the first reported case of glenohumeral HO following anterior dislocation. This occurred in a 70-year-old man following a fall onto outstretched hand. Due to persistent stiffness and pain at 8 months from initial injury, he underwent plain rad

Heterotopic ossification (HO) presents a substantial barrier to rehabilitation for patients with severe burns or trauma. Although surgical excision is a mainstay of management for this condition, this is unable to address the chronic sequelae of HO, including chronic pain, joint contractures, nerve dysfunction, and open wounds. Current therapeutic modalities are aimed at excision and the prevention of recurrence using nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or radiation therapy. Research is now focused on identifying alternative strategies to prevent the initial occurrence of HO through N

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification is defined as pathological bone formation in soft tissue, it usually occurs postoperatively and varies in amount from faint to massive ossification, which are frequently asymptomatic. The cause of heterotopic ossification is unknown, but it occurs more commonly after the procedure, in which considerable bone and soft tissue are dissected extensively. The heterotopic ossification in the abductor region of the hip following closed femoral nailing has rarely been documented.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and type of heterotopic ossification after closed

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence, time to development and clinical presentation of heterotopic ossification (HO) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive radiographs of 226 knees that were obtained at the end of sixth week, third, sixth, and twelfth months following TKA. The radiographic diagnosis of HO was based on the comparison of pre- and postoperative serial radiographs. Grading of HO was made according to the classification of Figgie et al. The clinical and radiographic course of HO and possible predisposin

Heterotopic ossification is a benign, ectopic bone growth that develops in muscle and other soft tissue. The exact cause is poorly understood, but it is a rarely serious complication of soft tissue trauma. Its most common form, myositis ossifications traumatica, occurs as a secondary complication of direct muscle injury. However, other forms are less common and can result from specific pathologic conditions, such as spinal cord trauma and metabolic disorders. In patients who have had spinal cord injury and subsequent paraplegia, heterotopic ossification often results in ankylosis of the hip an

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is an important complication of spinal cord and brain injuries but is rarely reported among patients with non-traumatic myelopathies. In a prospective study on medical problems seven (6.04%) among the 114 subjects with non-traumatic myelopathies had heterotopic ossification. All of them had involvement of hip joints. The co-morbid conditions were: urinary tract infection, seven; spasticity, three; pressure sores, five; and deep venous thrombosis, one. The initial diagnosis was often other than heterotopic ossification. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum alka

A description is given of an unusual case of a 13 year old girl who showed complete regression of neurogenically induced heterotopic ossification following recovery from her head injury. The case report indicates that heterotopic ossification is not necessarily permanent following neurological disturbance, but may be a reversible condition resulting from temporary neurological stress. The cause of heterotopic ossification is not known and the detrimental effect of misapplied physiotherapy is considered.

Heterotopic Ossification (HO) is a potential long-term complication in orthopaedic surgery. It is commonly classified according to the Brooker classification, which is based on radiological findings. To our knowledge the correlation of histological features to the Brooker grade is unknown as is the association between HO and the indication for revision. The aim of this paper is to analyze the ossification grade of HO tissue in patients undergoing revision hip and knee arthroplasty and to propose a histologically based classification system for HO. We also assess the relationship between the gr

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva and progressive osseous heteroplasia are genetic forms of heterotopic ossification (HO). Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is caused by ACVR1 gene mutations, while progressive osseous heteroplasia is caused by GNAS gene mutations. Nongenetic HO typically occurs after trauma or surgery, with an occurrence rate of 20-60%. It can also be observed in conditions such as diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, spinal ligament ossification, ankylosing spondylitis, and skeletal fluorosis. The exact cause of nongenetic HO is not entirely clear. More than 100

Heterotopic ossification is the formation of pathological bone in non-skeletal tissues (including muscles, tendons or other soft tissues), and the pathogenesis is not completely clear. It is often caused by musculoskeletal trauma, postoperative bone and joint surgery, or damage of the nervous system, the clinical manifestations are joint swelling, pain, and movement disorders, which often occur around the hips, knees, and elbows. At present, the prevention of heterotopic ossification mainly includes drugs, radiotherapy, molecular biological mechanism intervention, and Chinese medicine-related

Heterotopic ossification is an uncommon disorder that consists of deposition of ectopic bone outside the extraskeletal tissues. In the skin, it can be primary, in association with genetic syndromes, or be secondary to different disorders. The latter include subcutaneous ossification of the legs in chronic venousinsufficiency, an infrequent and unrecognized complication. We report the case of a patient with subcutaneous ossification of both legs secondary to venous insufficiency and review the literature.
