[Was Beethoven's deafness caused by Paget's disease? Report of findings and study of skull fragments of Ludwig van Beethoven].

Paget's disease of bone (osteitis deformans) has been repeatedly named as a possible cause for Ludwig van Beethoven's deafness. In 1985 a descendent of Franz Romeo Seligmann (a Viennese medical historian who in 1863 had studied Beethoven's mortal remains on the occasion of their relocation) presented to us three bone fragments allegedly from Beethoven's cranium. They represented fragments of the left parietal bone and the occiputum. It was possible to prove nearly with certainty that these bone fragments actually are Beethoven's. They did not show signs of Paget's disease of bone. It must ther

A survey of bone disease in the Alpk/AP rat.

Bone disease in an outbred colony of Alpk/AP rats over a period of more than 20 years is recorded. The incidence of most conditions, including fracture, necrosis, osteomyelitis, osteitis deformans, renal osteitis fibrosa cystica and neoplasia is rare compared with other species and possible reasons for this low incidence are discussed.

Distinctive diagnostic features of material aspirated from marrow in metabolic bone diseases.

In a series of cases of Paget's disease of the bone, two types of cells not previously described were observed in material aspirated from bone marrow in areas of osteitis deformans. One type was mononuclear, the other was giant, multinucleated and syncytial. They have been identified as osteoblasts and osteoclasts, respectively. The identification was based mainly on correlation with the histologic picture of osteitis deformans and of normal-growing bones as seen in section studies. Both osteoblasts and osteoclasts were recovered in aspirated bone marrow material in other instances of metaboli

Paget's disease of bone: the anatomical distribution.

Osteitis deformans has hitherto been regarded as a bone disease of unknown aetiology, but epidemiological studies have raised the possibility of an environmental factor. From the epidemiological studies, X-Rays of 1864 patients with Paget's disease were available for examination of the skeletal distribution of the disease. The epidemiological surveys were based upon examinations of X-Rays covering the lumbar spine, pelvis and upper ends of the femora, and all other X-Ray examinations on the patients showing Paget's disease were also studied for evidence of the disease outside the primary sites

Leontiasis ossea.

A case of leontiasis ossea, observed over a period of fifty years, is described with particular reference to certain similarities and differences as compared with Paget's disease of bone (osteitis deformans) and fibrous dysplasia. The differential diagnosis is discussed and it is concluded that leontiasis ossea is an entity in its own right.

Giant cell tumour in a vertebra affected by Paget's disease of bone.

A case of giant cell tumor in a vertebra affected by Paget's disease of bone is presented. This lesion, which is quite rare, has usually been observed in the bones of the skull and face, and is benign. It is probably hyperplastic rather than neoplastic in nature. Radiotherapy is contraindicated, since bone affected by osteitis deformans may possibly become malignant.

Bisphosphonates, osteonecrosis of the jaw, and dental treatment recommendations.

Millions of patients in the United States take bisphosphonates for management of malignant bone metastases, osteoporosis, osteitis deformans (Paget's disease), and osteogenesis imperfecta. Since 2003, over 200 cases of osteonecrosis of the jaws have been described, mostly in patients with multiple myeloma or breast cancer patients, and to a lesser extent in patients on oral medications.

Mandibular deformity associated with Paget's disease. Case report.

Paget's disease (osteitis deformans) and osteoporosis represent the commonest systemic bone disorders. Clinically Paget's disease may be mono-, or polyostotic, and is characterized by excessive and disorganized formation and resorption of bone. It may affect any of the facial bones, most notably the skull and the jaws. A case is described in which the only symptomatic manifestation of Paget's disease was mandibular prognathism. The pathogenesis, aetiology, and management are discussed.

Paget disease of bone.

Paget disease of bone, also known as osteitis deformans, is a nonmalignant disease of bone that causes accelerated and abnormal bone remodeling. It is the second most common bone disorder, osteoporosis being first. It is a localized disorder, meaning it affects just 1 or several bones in the body. Paget disease of bone is characterized by enlarged and deformed bones and occurs mainly in the axial skeleton. The cause of the disease is still not known entirely, but genetics are certain to be involved, and viral factors also are suspected.

Paget's disease of the bone in a Chinese woman.

Paget's disease, otherwise known as osteitis deformans, is an unusual condition in the Oriental population. We report a case of Paget's disease in a Chinese woman, incidentally diagnosed on a bone scan. This was confirmed by clinical history, biochemistry and imaging findings using other modalities. Although bone scans are commonly performed to diagnose traumatic occult fractures and bone metastases, they can also be used to diagnose metabolic bone diseases, such as osteoporotic fractures, and to evaluate Paget's disease. It can also diagnose acute fractures secondary to renal osteodystrophy a

Paget's disease of bone: current concepts in pathogenesis and treatment.

Recent advances have been made in understanding the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of Paget's disease of bone (osteitis deformans). The role of viruses in the pathogenesis of the disease has been extensively investigated, although no causative link has yet been demonstrated between infective agents and Paget's disease. Recent advances in the diagnosis of the disease have been made with increasing usage of radionucleotide imaging to determine the extent and distribution of the lesions. Treatment options have been extended with the emergence of the biphosphonates as potential main line thera

Fibro-osseous Lesions of the Jaw: A Report of Two Cases.

Fibro-osseous lesions of the maxillofacial bones comprise a diverse group of pathologic conditions that include developmental lesions, reactive or dysplastic diseases, and neoplasms. The concept of fibro-osseous lesions has evolved over the last several decades and now includes two major entities: fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma. The less common lesions include florid osseous dysplasia, periapical dysplasia, focal sclerosing osteomyelitis, proliferative periostitis of Garre, and osteitis deformans. We report two cases, the first, a craniofacial polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, and the se

[Sarcomatous degeneration in Paget disease of bone. Apropos of a clinical case].

Sarcomatous degeneration is the most dreaded complication of Paget's disease of bone: this case report offers an opportunity for underlining the difficulties of differential diagnosis in a case of pulmonary metastatization in the presence of osteitis deformans. Immunohistochemical assay applied to the cytology of pulmonary needle-aspiration and surgical biopsy targeted to the suspected neoplastic lesion allowed correct diagnosis. This case confirms the very poor prognosis of this kind of neoplasm: the rapidity of the fatal outcome was not significantly influenced even by the most aggressive po

Five polyostotic conditions that general orthopedic surgeons should recognize (or should not miss).

General orthopedic surgeons frequently encounter patients with conditions affecting multiple bones. It is important to recognize common polyostotic diseases. This article describes five polyostotic conditions: Multipe Enchondromatosis (Ollier Disease and Maffucci syndrome), Multiple Hereditary Exostosis (Diaphyseal Aclasis), Fibrous Dysplasia (McCune-Albright syndrome and Mazabraud syndrome), Paget's Disease of bone (Osteitis Deformans), and Skeletal Metastases. This is a survey of the clinical, pathologic and radiographic features that assist in diagnosing these conditions. Also, an overview

Paget's disease.

Paget's disease of bone is the most common metabolic bone disease after osteoporosis and affects 2-4% of adults over 55 years of age. Its etiology is only partly understood and includes both genetic and environmental factors. The disease may be asymptomatic and can be uncovered incidentally on x-ray or in biochemical tests performed for another condition. It can also manifest itself with bone pain, deformity, fracture or other complications. Paget's disease is diagnosed by x-rays and in general has very typical radiological features, but occasionally the clinical picture may be unusual and a d

[Paget's disease of bone].

Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is a chronic disorder characterized by focal abnormalities of bone turnover. The symptoms of PDB include bone pain, bone deformity, osteoarthritis, and an increase in risk of pathological fracture and neurological problems. PDB is the second most common metabolic bone disease in European countries, although PDB is uncommon in Japan. PDB shows geographical and ethnic clustering. Based on this, two hypotheses of etiology of PDB have been proposed. One hypothesis is that PDB results from a slow virus infection of osteoclasts with paramyxovirus. The other is that PDB
